FaQ's Markmanship

By John79, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I am new to Xwing having played about a dozen games of xwing and in my reading of the FaQ I don't understand the markmanship change/clearification. Is the FaQ saying must be able to change one dice to critical and one to noncritical combat damage to use markmanship or can we change just one dice if that is the only one that the card can apply too.

It's saying that if you use it, you must change all <focus> results per the card. So you can't use it to just turn <focus> into <hits>, you must turn at least one <focus> to a <crit>

Oh! I see. The uncorrected card gives you the option while the corrected says you must. We have been playing that card as the FaQ says and I couldn't figure out why you would want to play it any different than what the FaQ says. And wasn't sure if the Faq was stating that it was a mandatory requirement to change 2 dice for the card to take effect. But I understand now.

Just to be clear, there are no "corrections" to Marksmanship; the card text hasn't changed at all since the first printing. The FAQ clarifies the card, although I agree that I don't understand why you would want to change only some of your [eye] results to successes.

Only thing I can think of is there may be a case where you don't want a <crit> like when shooting at a ship when another ship has DtF near by, if you had the option of making all <focus> into <hit> and none into <crit> then the other guy couldn't use DtF.

Or leebo (or really anyone) with determination, or a HLC outrider that's at range 1 of you.

There are reasons you might not want to crit your enemy, but they are obscure corner cases.

For some reason determination is becoming quite popular on Decimators where I'm from.

Quick rules tip, the critical effect on Mangler Canon is optional :o remember that next time you see determination!

nearly cost me a game last night until I actually read the card!

Outside of Leebo, the Decimator is probably the best fit for Determination. All that hull means you have a pretty good chance of drawing several crits and discarding even one makes it worthwhile. I myself prefer to go more aggressive with my Decimator and take attack enhancing upgrades more than defensive ones, but its a choice.
