Building a Fleet - General Concepts

By BiggsIRL, in Star Wars: Armada

General Solo, is your strike team assembled?

First of the newest project - Building a Fleet.

No pictures right now, in the middle of a move... so that kinda sucks.

Looks good:)

I personally would disagree with the statement about bidding to go second because I think you should NEVER EVER IF YOUR LIFE LITERALLY DEPENDED ON IT purposely bid for second player(not saying there might be a situation where looking at your opponents you decide to go second) but thats based on my experience.

It's just become a pet peeve of mine seeing the constant refrence to bidding for second player... Of course you might have diffrent experiences and I'm not actually crtitizining you, just expressing frustration

When 400 points comes Imma do as many Gladiators that I can do.

loving your blog

When 400 points is standard play I am running 5 MC30's to roll over things.

We don't even know the costs yet though! I suspect they will be 60 at least.

I am expecting 67 points though it has no brace so ehhh

Extreme lists are great. Think of a ship or strategy and take it as far as it will go. Some example are: Why have 1-2 when you can have 6-7, The Corvette swarm is about as far as you can take a Corvette. 3 Victory Star Destroyers, I ask you why stop at 2? 3 Assault Frigates, again why stop with 1-2?

When learning I suggest you take some nude ships learn to play the ships then once you have the basic ability to drive a nude fleet add some cards and take it up a notch. If you have a group of freinds and play often enough have a fleet build night where you have 20 minutes to throw together the best you can think of, or randomly throw 6 ship cards at each player and see what they can come up with.

I rather stay clear of net decking fleets, the idea at this point it to learn as much as you can about what works, what doesn't, what combo's you can find and just make mistakes and learn. Taking a list that someone else has worked on at this point slows down the learning.

Which mean 5 is just 300 pts.

@67 you have 402 for 6, awwwww. :(

I am certainly not going to argue with you there locally, I see a lot of players going the bid for second route, and I just smile and graciously accept first player with my 297-300 pt list.

Honestly I am interested to see how it shakes out. At the moment in our league matches there is a very slight bias towards First Player, but sample size is still low.

I really like that last bit of advice. Being able to work out for yourself what works and why gives you a lot more understanding than just reading "this is good" on a blog or message board. Experimentation and figuring out your style of play is what makes a well balanced game fun.

Not sure if my question is applicable but I have been wondering whether Gunnery Team is obligatory on a VSD especially if you only have one in your list. I have been playing without it and I feel that it doesn't dish out enough damage for the points its worth. I usually hang my VSD back so that its front arc is always pointing towards the enemy but doing so means I can only fire once. Not sure if you guys use them like that but I would think that it's the sensible tactic considering their low maneuverability and strong forward firepower. I know GT doesn't allow you to target the same ship twice but with a wide front arc the VSD usually has sights on at least 2 ships, both of which it can fire at with GT.

I wouldnt say obligatory at all, but it certainly is very nice to have if you can squeeze them in.

I'd put that one down as a "not required but useful". There are other options for that slot, or no upgrade at all. It depends heavily on how many enemy ships you expect to face, and if they will be in formation. Not to mention the role of that Victory. Gunnery Team gets the most milage out of the VSD2, which is already expensive. Sensor Team works well with the VSD1, and Flight Controllers is your carrier build.

Remember especially that you can take anti-squadron pot shots out of the same arc with gunnery team. Warlord/H9 is the closest I would come to an autoinclude for Gunnery Team.

One of the nice things about Armada to date is that there are no "obligatory" upgrades. The balance so far is very nice.

i personally havent found gunnery teams useful at all, for its price i rarely find myself in a spot where i can shoot 2 ships where the second target isnt obscured. and most of the time i can i could double arc them anyways

EXTREME LISTS: interesting.

Given unlimited access to cards and squadrons, what are the two most expensive single ship lists you can create under wave 1?

One Imperial one Rebel.

Assuming they come out roughly the same value it would be interesting to match them too.

another vote for "meh" to gunnery teams (until Akbar comes out, but he's not a VSD guy) as they dont do diddly to make the front arc any harder to dodge

The most ubiquitous VSD variant is the carrier (hangars and flight controllers), which bypasses the front-arc issue by chucking squadrons at things

one of my favorites is VSD-2 Dominator, which can still fire 5 dice out the sides

also, in balanced wargames, these "Extreme lists" are known as "skews." A lot of their success comes from stacking so much of unit type A that they overwhelm an opponent's counters. Unlike warmahordes, though, pretty much everything in the game is vulnerable to everything with enough effort (except squadrons being not at all vulnerable to VSDs or other 1 anti-squadron ships) so cR-90 swarms live and die on their manuevering more than the stacking of ships.

Great article - even without pictures.

No mention if a pure Nebulous flotilla though...

I dunno, Demolisher glad with expanded launchers is pretty obligatory.

Assault concussion missiles is better imo since you can use it out of all arcs.

it's "better" (far more reliable for similar if not greater damage output) with Skreed, for certain

Tears Nebs a new one. :D

Don't see the one VSD, two GSD list in there.....

Well, I couldn't go through every single combination, unfortunately. So some got left out.

NebB swarm and VSD/GSDx2 didn't make the cut.
