Intensify Forward Firepower Episode VIII!

2 words: B-wing Bubble wrap.

Oh-ho-ho, that is freaking nasty!

Also x-wings have a butload of health and firepower, that makes them useful.

I try to include 1-2 squadrons per ship. I think of them like I think of upgrade cards. They augment a ship's capabilities and reach. If I need an escort to keep bombers off me, I go with an X-wing. If I need gladiator protection, I take a b-wing or two. If I am aggressive, then it is a-wings.

Really, just having a squadron token on your AF2 with a b-wing or a-wing tagging along is the way to go.

A few thoughts:

B-wings are great against opponents who want to close with you. The VSD-I / Gladiator type lists really dislike B-Wings, especially if the Imperial player did not bring fighters themselves (or enough of them). However, to be fully transparent as someone who has flown a lot of B-wings, there are two critical flaws you must be aware of:

  1. B-wings can be tied up. They do not mulch other squadrons rapidly, and a properly timed attack where enemy squadrons arrive to tie up the B-wings at the same time as their ships can be very problematic. You either need to keep them clean or have the ability to reach out and touch some enemy squadrons. Speed 2 can make it hard to stagger them like you can with some other rebel bombers to keep them out of range but then hit enemy ships.
  2. B-wings are useless if the opponent brings a fleet that wants to engage at long range. The single worst match-up for a B-wing user is the rebel corvette spam list (and variants thereof), which is a strong list to begin with but gets much stronger when it can ignore one of your primary anti-ship components because they don't intend to get into a brawl.

X-wings impress me somewhat less than A-wings for the simple reason that they are slower, don't have counter, and require squadron commands; they do have escort, so if you are using B-wings, I like them a touch more. With that said, I think the X is totally usable but not as versatile as the A-wing (see my initial post above about A's being the only rebel squadron able to operate effectively without a squadron command), and the only rebel squadron I would never field is the Y-wing: a heavy bomber that cannot impede enemy squadron movement which is barely better at attacking ships than the X-wing (.75 expected damage vs. 1 expected damage) in return for being massively worse against squadrons. I mean, it's slightly cheaper? However, I cannot see a situation where I would take a non-Dutch Y-wing over an X or an A.
