Out for a few weeks - becoming cyborg

By heychadwick, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Got to love modern medicine.

Went to the doc today. I knew my doc was on vacation, but he had a filler in. I went to take my cast off and get the Boot. I was ready to walk out without crutches. They looked like I was crazy and said that I don't get to take the cast off for 2-6 more weeks. My wife and I were upset as our doc told us I would be walking out. They couldn't reach him as he was on a plane, but landing in an hour. We left and went to lunch.

Within the hour, they called back and were totally wrong. I could get the boot and no crutches! Well, but I couldn't get in to see the doc again today. So....trying to schedule for some time next week. I don't have to lay with my foot up in the air anymore. Yes!

I'll be able to work from home on Monday and try to earn a paycheck, as not working hurts the bank account.

Dude, i wish you the fastest and least painful recovery. All that sounds horrific.

Like i say, i've not had the same injury but i've had one that prevented me from walking or doing 'normal' stuff for a while so i sympathise.

I think you've got a good attitude towards it all though and thats really important.

Thanks! What I think is good about this surgery is that it is elective. I chose to have it and roughly when. Much better than just having it happen.

I'm much more coherent this time. I don't know what it is, but the first 4 surgeries had me a zombie for a few weeks. I was able to post the next day online. Or was it even that night? Crazy.

I've been trying to put pressure on my foot now, too, and it's painful. Kind of scary, but hey...the surgery overall isn't? I'm MUCH happier that I can crutch around the house instead of living on a recliner with my foot in the air.

I was able to pull out all my 15mm WWII Germans yesterday and count up what I have. It's a lot. There are some local guys going to play some Battlegroup Kursk and Overlord. I've only done Flames of War and this other game looks pretty cool. The unit charts are more realistic and less cherry picking the best stuff.

The moment I knew there would be trouble. They usualy don't have a clue what's going on, or they want to keep you in hospital for as long as possible.

Same here when i had to go in for an infected apendix. They pumped antibiotics in me till it went away, but i was still there for a week, all the while not getting sleep because the bloody hospital was being rebuilt and the flippin' builders starting at six in the frigging morning AND i was dead set to go see War of the Worlds on the big screen (last week it was playing in cinemas at the time) and then some punk male nurse says i might have to stay longer when my own doc has signed me out...guy got a deathglare and a "No.Leaving. Now." responce from me; (Yes i go Grimlock when i get angry)

Oh yeah and having a doctor who looked exactly like Donald Pleasance in Halloween was also weird.

I got the cast off and the boot put on. At night, I take the boot off and sleep with just my foot in the bed. It was the first time since the surgery not to be compressed or restricted in some sense. Every little twitch sent flares of pain all across my foot! I had a terrible time sleeping, but took enough pain meds to finally get through it.

I haven't gotten a game in for weeks. A game of anything, that is. I'm ready to do some gaming, but I can't drive for a few more weeks. Pain meds restrict me. Maybe I can sucker someone to head to my house some time.

Do you have Vassal? You could play as much X-wing as you like. Right from home.

Or get Sid Meier's Aces games on the iPad, for a surrogate fix.

I've tried Vassal, but it was too much of a headache for me to figure out. It seemed a giant pain. With my pain meds, I'm definitely not going to be trying it.

Sid Meier's Aces game? I'll have to look it up. Is it on Android? I don't spend extra money and deal with DRM for Apple products.

If Vassal doesn't work for you, why don't you try a forum e-mail game.

One forum member a year and half or so back was bored and challenged the forum to a game. He took one side and the forum members took the other. He set his maneuvers and gave a window of time for everyone to post in maneuvers for the ships available. He would then post firing options for the first forum PS pilot to shoot (and then subsequent others) and gave an amount of time for them to respond, then did it. It functions like a very slow game played over many hours of a day but it worked.

It helps if you take pictures between rounds (for plotting maneuvers) and for each choice that the forum pilots have to make (who to fire on).

On a side note, I've been going to see a deep muscle therapist for my various injuries over the years. He specifically breaks up the scar tissue in your muscles and will adjust you like a chiro if needed. It has done wonders for my mobility issues.

He said it often prevents surgury is certain cases. Any type of inflammation or the like due to internal scar tissue he can repair. Your milage may vary but it's worth checking out if you can avoid surgery. I noticed a difference after four or five visits(1/week). After about three months I had the reach back in my shoulder. I gained about 3 inches of movement.

I'll try anything to avoid surgery.

My issue has been trauma arthritis. So, no muscle work could help with that. I got rid of my ankle, though, so no more arthritis! Just need to recover from the surgery.

I did start watching the BBC "Sherlock" and it's very good. Much better than the US show "Elementary". I'm almost done with it, though.

It doesn't seem that Sid Meier's Aces games are on android, so that's a no go.

Hearthstone to tide you over?

The BBC Sherlock is great. Sucks that it's a year or more between seasons. I never have seen Elementary but it's in my queue. I'm really looking forward to the Ian McKellen Sherlock movie that's out now.
