We use 3D models on top of the cardboard counterparts, then when ships get close or collide we remove the 3D models.

EXACTLY! lol, note; no Empire in my collection (I will probably buy a Kimoglia Heavy Hutt fighter, since it was my favorite in SW-Galaxies though)
