Never tell me the odds.....

By RashDendar, in X-Wing

So I was looking over a few cards and came across a weird combo. Saw a few threads on it with no real answer and not the answer to my specific questions.

C3po says that he can be used for lando crew special action. However it doesn't say anything about being on the same ship. Based on the cards words of "rolling defense dice" I wouldn't see a problem with c3po being used if he's on a separate ship as lando. Or for that matter just c3po being used for another ship.

If his card read.... When this ship rolls defense dice.... Then I could see it. Thoughts? questions? Ideas? Anyone ever see a definite answer to this?

When it says "you do this" it means the specific ship the ability is on or the ship that the upgrade is on. All cards work this way.

Consider Chewbacca's pilot ability, which reads, "When you are dealt a faceup Damage card, immediately flip it facedown (without resolving its ability)."

Reading it your way, all my ships would gain his ability. This would mean the IG-2000 title is pointlesss as well.

C-3PO only works for the ship he crews.

Yeah I see what you are saying. But chewie is in the FAQ for being whenever chewie takes damage. C3po is not in the FAQ for whenever his ship rolls defense dice. But it says he can be used on lando action. But again with no specifics on ship locations

I think the standard for this game is that an effect only affects the ship the card is on, unless the card says otherwise.

But Rules Lawyers are gonna lawyer...

I think the standard is poorly worded cards requiring constant FAQ.

Sorry FFG, it's true.

i think the standard is "dear board, stop being so ridiculous with card definitions, you know what it means"

"You may..." in the absence of a qualifier always applies to the ship an upgrade is equipped to/ the ship itself. This has been the case since wave 0 (This is the language used on all the upgrades and pilot abilities from the Core set). You can argue there might be a clearer wording (MTG avoids ambiguous language like this, for instance), but it's pretty clear what RAI is, especially given Palpatine explicitly says he applies to all dice rolls you make for any ship you control, rather than all dice rolls you make (which would apply to his ship only).

On page 19 of the Core Rulebook, there's a sidebar in the upper left-hand corner titled "Card Abilities".

Many card abilities use the word "you" to specifically reference that Ship card. Abilities on Ship cards cannot affect other ships unless explicitly specified by the ability...

Likewise, Damage cards and Upgrade cards only affect the ship to which they are assigned, unless otherwise specified.

This isn't even RAI or an unwritten but commonly understood standard: it's an explicit, written rule. If a Ship card says "you", it means that ship. If an upgrade card says "you", it means the ship to which it's assigned.

While there are definitely a few poorly worded cards, in general this game needs less errata than most similarly complicated games I've played. I also think the use of "you" to indicate same ship saves unnecessary wording on cards (especially since the majority apply only to the same ship), and makes them much easier to read in general, so I think that's a good call by FFG.

I don't want to get into a long debate about this but all crew cards unless specified other wise only effect the ship they are on and that is common sense. Otherwise, Shuttle is broken:

Fleet Wide ABILITIES!

Rebel Captive:

Once per round, the first ship that declares you as the target of an attack immediately receives 1 stress token.

So I have 5 TIES and a shuttle, each TIE has all these abilities right?

Mara Jade:
At the end of the Combat phase, each enemy ship at Range 1 that does not have a stress token receives 1 stress token.

Sweet, get within range 1 of any TIE fighter in my fleet? Awesome. I mean, it doesn't say range 1 of what right?

Gunner:
After you perform an attack that does not hit, you may immediately perform a primary weapon attack. You cannot perform another attack this round.

Howlrunner who? am guessing that in this instance the YOU is referring to me as a player and therefore applicable to all ships on the field of battle.

Now I know the shuttle only has two crew slots but the Decimator has three so I guess, Decimator and three or four TIES is the new OP?

Lets take a look at how these are worded.

emperor-palpatine.pngc-3po.png

  • Emperor Palpatine's reads change a friendly ship's die which allows this ability to extend to any friendly ship
  • C-3PO just states you may, it says nothing about friendly ships.
  • Jan Ors Pilot ability states "another" friendly ship which means that you cannot use this ability on Jan Ors as it has to target a ship other than thyself.

I think all the wording is concise and clear. If anyone is trying to say otherwise then it is best to either call the TO or just politely ask them to go find another player.

This debate is over.
