most powerful upgrades... whats your top 5?

By The_Brown_Bomber, in X-Wing

This is open to opinion of course but i'll take a stab. You can have your own top 5 and it will likely be different to mine)

In no particular order...

TOP 5

1) R2-D2 (with Shield Upgrade is OP)

2) Push the Limit (on Soontir Fel is OP)

3) Predator (Big reason why swarms have largely disappeared in MY meta)

4) Vader Crew (paired with gunner or on a an omicron shuttle is nasty)

5) Engine Upgrade (on a large base ship is OP)

Honorable mention (yes any of these could have made my top 5)

6) Advanced Sensors

7) C3-P0 (with falcon title is nasty)

8) Heavy Laser Cannon

9) Rebel Captive (shouldn't other imperial lists be immune to this?)

10) Gunner

11) Shield Upgrade

12) Stealth Device

13) Tactician (could be higher because its a counter to PTL)

Did I miss any? No doubt. What would your top upgrades be?

Edited by The_Brown_Bomber

Good point on number 9, they should call it VIP captive. I disagree with R2D2 being your number 1 and I would put auto thrusters in there some where as it has defined a generation for some ships.

I don't see how Shield Upgrade improves all that much on R2-D2- if you're not getting shot at enough to keep you below full health, you don't really need R2-D2.

That being said, my Top 5, also in no particular order

-Predator: Pure mathematical efficiency

-Push the Limit: Extra Actions are always great

-Gunner: Missing hurts. This makes you, well, not miss.

-Engine Upgrade: Repositioning is incredibly powerful

-Heavy Laser Cannon: 4 Attack Dice. I don't need to explain further here.

I don't have a top 5 or special order or anything, but the obvious strong options look to me like the following:

Predator

Lone Wolf

Autothrusters

HLC

Gunner

PtL

Engine Upgrade

C-3PO

I'm sure there are plenty of others, but the above are pretty much must-haves on at least one ship or ship class.

9) Rebel Captive (shouldn't other imperial lists be immune to this?)

Shouldn't other Imperial lists be fighting Rebels instead of their buddies? ;)

I would say:

1) C-3P0 on a Falcon. Incredibly high mathematical efficiency, and it can't be shut down except by reducing Agility.

2) Predator. Rerolls that can't be shut down (except by a crit).

3) BTL-A4 Y-Wing. Because now Y-Wings are competitive.

4) Chardaan Refit. Because now A-Wings are competitive.

5) Autothrusters. Brilliant damage mitigation; if you have a focus, then any result becomes an evade (and even if you don't, your chances of rolling an evade on a single die are doubled).

In no particular order

-C3PO

-Predator

-PTL

-Autothrusters

-Gunner

Honorable mention: Rebel Captive, R2D2 droid, HLC, Veteran Instincts, EU.

I don't know about powerful, and (as always) it's all going to vary from ship to ship and pilot to pilot, but I think the five that I keep handy (instead of putting back away into my big stack of cards) have to be:

*Veteran Instincts - if I've got a point to kill, it's golden. Especially going from a 7 to a 9, for instance.

*Push the Limit - Mostly because I fly lots of Interceptors, but solid on some other ships, too.

*Engine Upgrade - Solid gold, especially on large-based ships (who can cross the table in record time).

*R2-D2 - Anyone who plays Corran or lots of X-Wings loves this little bugger.

*Fire Control System - A near-tie with Enhanced Sensors, but FCS edges it out a little (pure personal preference).

It's ship specific but ACD is easily in the top three.

In no particular order:

- Veterean Instincts. Cheap and with obvious benefits.

- Predator, rerolls, I need them.

- Gunner, more rerolls.

- Lone Wolf, yup rerolls.

- Soon the Emperor.

An honorable mention is Advanced Sensors and Auto Thrusters.

R2-D2 isnt my number 1, its in my top5 somewhere.

Push

Advanced Sensors

Engine

VI

FCS

In that order.

C3PO

Ptl

Engine upgrade

Predator

Autothrusters

Engine Upgrade, on Large ships.

Autothrusters, should only be "out of arc."

Push the Limit, still the card to compare all other EPTs to.

C-3PO, just a bit too good for 3 points.

Rebel Captive, again just a bit too good for the points. Passive upgrades are just worth more than active upgrades.

Note that IMO none of these is broken, except for Engine Upgrade on Large turrets ships.

yeah Fire Control System belongs in there, not my top5 but still very strong esp on Corran Horn and IG88s.

Thrusters (does the impossible games against pwts bearable as you actually get something for outflying them; makes 2 dice ships at range 3 cry; **** fickle green dice)

Ptl (obvious; evade > green dice)

R3-a2 (god of stress; gives no ***** about your green dice)

Predator (fickle red dice?)

FCS (fickle red dice)

Lots of upgrades are useful. But only a few upgrades invalidate all others of their slot.

Most notably, I hate the Heavy Laser Cannon. It's so lazy. It's the Best Weapon. Most accurate, longest ranged, hardest hitting... no reason NOT to fit one if you have points in 90% of the cases.

Also, some EPTs should have been cheaper to make them real options. I wish I'd see more Outmaneuver, Stay on Target, and the like, but we don't. They tend to be harder to use than 'easy' EPTs like Push the Limit and Predator, while not being cheap enough to slot in.

Also, I hate that Veteran Instincts even exists. It's had a warping effect on the PS game so bad.

VI should have never been printed

From what ive seen, almost every meta build in the game ATM forgoes vi except for some brobots

It's more that whisper USED to have a warped effect on the meta; not so much anymore. All in all, seems fine to me. It let's my Jake land prockets on soontir :)

Ptl and predator are more worthy of complaint by those standards, though ptl is way too fun to change and is VERY easily countered (blocks, obstacles, and r3-a2, god of stress)

1. Gunner - Go ahead. Waste those tokens. I dare you..

2. Predator - A free reroll is never not good.

3. PTL - Nuff said.

4. Engine Upgrade - Makes large ships faster and almost as maneuverable as small ones.

5. Autothrusters - Its not the Turret fix we want, but its the one that we need.

Edited by Stilgod

The turret fix we need is thruster's out of arc benefit serrated into the base rules of the game

That way you wouldnt have to take an upgrade limited to a small group of ships to give any sort of meaning to outmaneuvering them

I don't understand some of the gripe about thrusters. They transcend green dice and they can be counterplayed by everyone; what's not to love?

Edited by ficklegreendice

I get a lot of value out of outmaneuver .. particularly when paired with Wedge.

I figure TIE Advanced Title upgrade is pretty much used 100% on those ships (or will be), so I'd call that one pretty strong :)

Wow, a lot of people are skipping over ACD. It would be my number 1.

pre nerf yes, post nerf not even close, imo it's overcosted now.

In no order:

Advanced sensors

Veteran instincts

Predator

Gunner

Tactician (very undervalued)

Honorable mention based on specific ships

C3pO

Fcs

Autothrusters

Ptl
