Best expansion for beginners

By cieje, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

4 players right now, and this is the first time we've played a game of this type. Last weekend we stumbled through the first quest in vanilla descent a few times until we got most of the rules and gameflow down. I think we played... 4 times.

What would be the next step for us? Obviously continue and do the next quests, but do expansions only add additional quests and monsters or are there more worthwhile benefits for a particular expansion for even our level of gameplay?

Well of Darkness would be the next vanilla expansion, then Altar of Despair. They add new monsters, treasures, tricks for the overlord, and quests.

Road to Legend is for a "campaign style" descent where the entire game takes much longer, although it can be broken into different gaming sessions. Most of it is not compatible with Vanilla. You play one or the other.

You can keep what you got and do more quests......or grab some vanilla expansions.....or switch to Road to Legend.....whichever you think you'd prefer. :)

For a vanilla (and by that we mean non-Road to Legends games) I would actually recommend getting Tomb of Ice first. This adds Feats which can help the heroes out.

But I'm never a hero!

More traps! More spawns! Dark Relics!

Fie on your Feats!

=P

Altair of Despair adds a lot of extra complexity that makes the game more fun. I would go with that one. Well of Darkness is more of the same from the original box. Atair takes the game further!

I actually like Altar of Despair least overall (it's only good point is the monsters. Oh, and that the quests are probably better than the WoD ones, but that wouldn't be hard). I think I'd recommend Well of Darkness, or Tomb of Ice if your heroes are having trouble or you prefer feats to more overlord cards. But do read the rulebooks online before deciding.

But AoD has two of the best heroes in the game: Tahlia and Kirga

WoD has Nanok and Laurel of Bloodwood. ToI has Zyla, and (I would argue) has the most memorable heroes overall.

I tend to recommend WoD based purely on the fact that it balances out the different weapon types in the treasure decks. Of course, that would be irrelevant if you jumped straight into my Descent mod , but it uses Well of Darkness monsters in almost every quest anyway.
