ibsh's minis

By ibsh, in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

Jumping ahead to Bespin and I'm fairly pleased with Davith:

He's come out oddly shiny like the Sabs.

In any case I found the blue and black to be a bit ostentatious for a stealthy operative, and indeed for a Force user who's managed to avoid the tender embrace of the Empire, so I opted for a couple of darker shades of grey.

Like a Bossk. Not varnished yet but I'm really rather pleased with him.

Very nice, accurate color choices. Beautiful.

Been looking forward to these guys for ages

Those look sharp, mind sharing what paints you used on the grey guy on the left?

The fur is various mixtures of Vallejo Model black, sky grey and white. Basically a charcoal grey base, black wash, mid-grey dry brush, and manual white highlights for the beard and brows.

Much obliged.

Pretty pleased with this strange old hermit.

Inquisitor. I chickened out from doing his eyes since I already attempted them four times and had to hack them back out; the sockets are just so deep. Now that he's varnished I may give it another go and just wash out any further mistakes. In general, quite a lot of fun; a really great character design but a questionable sculpt. Had to replace his saber with a brass wire too.

HKs.

Their eyes were bloody hard work. They're sculpted in, so there's a natural shadow cast inside them. In retrospect I wish I'd filled them with some green stuff and painted them freehand.

Hello for the HK's on the right what color paint did you use. I am trying to paint my HK's and I can't seem to get the right color mix.

I mix everything, so I imagine it's a combination of Vallejo's orange brown and base brown.

These guys have been sat half-painted on my desk, taunting me, for literally three months or more. I had to finish them just to shut them up. They are not amazing.

They don't look anything like as shiny IRL.

For *not* being amazing, the boys are looking good. :)

Well if you dont like your hoth troopers, feel free to send them to me in the mail.

I really do like those Echo Base Troopers, especially if they aren't actually that glossy IRL.

The boys from the Bureau. Actually ended up looking a bit dull, but appropriate for intelligence agents. Pleased with the paint job in any case, and particularly with the minor mod to Immodesty Blaise's ridiculous pose.

Also! By the simple trick of reading the label on my matt varnish, I found out why so many minis have looked over-shiny: they just needed a second coat. Queuing about fifteen of them up for a once-over right now.

Back in the ol' days before the Great Nerfin', fellas was buyin' up corsets left right and centre. Three corsets apiece, sure as ya like.

Here's to the only two uniques that might ever need to be on the table more than once: Merc Gideon and Merc Threepio

Hellooo, what have we here?

Luke, with a longer lightsaber and a slightly shorter handle.

Very nice!

Any chance of a how-to regarding the Luke mod?

Any chance of a how-to regarding the Luke mod?

Oh, for sure.

First thing to know is I have no idea what I'm doing.

So I chopped off the saber blade and tossed it, then cut off the angled top of the saber handle and saved it to be reattached. Then I cut off everything that remained of the handle above his right hand and tossed that.

Next I took a small hand drill ( https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0037V3S08 ) and drilled straight down into his hands towards the saber's pommel; this is fiddly but not actually difficult; I've only done it twice and it worked fine both times (the other was the Inquisitor). It will feel a bit hairy at moments cos you're removing the majority of the plastic from inside that part of the model, and you'll definitely be able to see the drill through some very thin bits of plastic you leave as you go. You don't need to go all the way through; I went down as far as the last couple of fingers on his left hand; just far enough to seat the brass rod correctly.

Speaking of which, I then cut a bit of brass rod ( https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0006N6S5M ) to the right length and inserted it into the hole in his hands. Had to use a little file to round off the exposed end, but just the one I usually use for plastic mould lines etc.

So far pretty easy. The tricky bit for me was drilling a hole of the same diameter in the tiny angled guard of the saber I'd removed earlier, so that it could be slotted on. It's tiny and I wasn't using anything to steady it, just my fingers. Once done I pushed it over the top of the saber right down to its home. Superglued everything and Bob's your uncle.
