EPISODE TIE FIGHTER... OH BABY!!!

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

In all honesty, 13 points maybe. A rear arc is nice but for basic academy ties I wouldn't want to spend more that a point, mayyybe 2 on upgrading them.

One of the design thoughts I've had is that there are certain upgrades so useful that they simply can't ever be cost effective. Like: imagine a Tie Fighter only mod that gave you 50 red dice. Try pricing it in such a way that it would be worth putting on a low-durability platform with _every gun on the opponent's side aimed at said platform_. Sure, you could 1-shot a Falcon (I mean, presumably. Your dice would have to be very, _very_ cold not to!), but I'd guess you wouldn't survive the first round of firing. And- given that Han Shoots First- maybe your Tie wouldn't even last long enough to use its super gun.

So how do you price that fairly? I honestly don't think you can.

A rear arc on a standard Tie would be easier to price, but I do think starts to run into the issue where "fair" is either so low that it's an autoinclude, or so high that it never gets used.

Rear arc on TIEs would actually be broken-nasty, since you could double-joust without the K-turn stress.

Like: imagine a Tie Fighter only mod that gave you 50 red dice. Try pricing it in such a way that it would be worth putting on a low-durability platform with _every gun on the opponent's side aimed at said platform_.

Just charge over 100 points. So it can't be used in a competitive game.

Here's a much higher res version of the original image Joe posted:

Even Better Brother!

:D

Is that pilot photoshopped in there? His reflection looks like someone took a picture of the figure, flipped it upside down and airbrushed the ankles off.

That would be nice (and probably on the way) for X-Wing. However, what I want to see for the game is a green A-Wing like the one we see briefly in the Rebels season 2 premier.

Found this video that shows the inside of the cockpit - two seats, one rear-facing(!)

I have such mixed feelings about this beasty.

On the *one* hand, I see the TIE Fighter as the initial mass-produced Imperial unit, with the TIE Advanced Vader's personal improvement/maximization of the design that was not economical to produce, which resulted in the cut-down sidegrade of the TIE Interceptor...followed by short-runs like the TIE Defender and TIE Phantom...

Which REALLY makes me want to see some variant of those appear as the new 'standard' Imperial unit (as in the Thrawn novels, when the Empire remnants had all but transitioned to the Interceptor in all cases)...

...yet...

...yet...

Gods ****, that thing is sexy. I mean...wow. That's a gorgeous update of the standard TIE Fighter! I think I could love it, if it didn't make me really scratch my head trying to figure out where the TIE Advanced and TIE Interceptor - both also seen on-screen - fit into its design lineage, given how much it looks like just a repainted TIE Fighter with some doodads added. (I mean, for real, it does look good, but...things had already advanced so far past this, it feels like a bizarre regression, somehow...)

Yeah, it is kind of disappointing that 30 years later or whatever, the specialized ship of this elite imperial order is just a modified TIE Fighter, instead of one of the countless advanced TIEs from the EU, or even a completely new TIE.

This ship is basically just a Royal Guard TIE for the TIE Fighter. But, like the actual Royal Guard TIE(and not just the Interceptor repaint this game gave us), it does look freakin cool still.

what I want to see for the game is a green A-Wing like the one we see briefly in the Rebels season 2 premier.

Then paint your A-Wing green, because it's the same ship.

So a tie with 360 turret and sensors, unless it's also got shields I don't see it working.

Even priced cheaply once you put a cannon on and fcs it'll be an expensive firework without better damage mitigation than a regular tie.

Am I the only one that doesn't want to include new ships in X Wing? I'd much rather see it kept in the galactic civil war.

Oh nice! It seems the inside of it shows that 2 pilots can sit back to back with horizontal viewing panels at the back of the fighter.

You can have your no more new ships idea by not playing with or against any while the rest of us still get new shinies :)

Besides we long ago left 'classic Star Wars for all things EU and already have the K wing coming which only barely scrapes into the Legends defined Galactic Civil War period. I think the ship has sailed on keeping things in that timeframe.

As for the Special Forces Tie. I think it looks pretty cool. And seeing as rule of cool has always been at Star Wars core i'm happy with it. :)

Probably not but that's likely the minority view?

Yeah, I know. It's just kinda like buying into a Battle of Britain game and then finding out everyone is clamoring for Vietnam War era planes.

I'd much rather FFG just drew a line under X Wing and said "We're done, this is the finished product and the complete range" than add in the newer ships or prequel ships.

Then they could release a new game for the sequels. It's not that I don't think the sequel ships are awesome, I really like what I've seen so far, but I don't think they belong in X Wing.

EDIT: At the very least they could impose a time-frame restriction. You could keep the core mechanics, but agree with your opponent before hand what era you want to play in, the same way some WW2 games work.

Meh!!

I can't stand those white panels

How do you know Episode 7 isn't still in the galactic civil war?

Remember, the EU is gone. Sure, the Emperor died in RotJ, but maybe the Empire and the Rebellion are still at war.

The picture says "first order special forces TIE Fighter" I highly doubt we would get a pilot skill 1 pilot for a ship like that. My guess, is this TIE will be considered the next TIE Advanced, or at the very least able to take the advanced targeting computer. Unless they do a whole new game.

There are "standard" TIEs in the movie without the "Cogs" or antenna (and presumably without the turret/cannon) - these "standard" TIEs can be seen in the first teaser dogfighting the Falcon.

I am aware of that. THIS particular TIE shown, that people are talking about, is NOT one of those. Hence my comment that a pilot skill 1 on a elite version TIE variant is unlikely. On the generic ones, sure. You see, I expect this TIE variant, should it make its way to X-Wing, be a separate sculpt, rather than a title.

Liqutex makes an additive for acrylic paints that adds a sparkle to the paint. I might hace to try some to boost the white on the solar panels.

Would love to play X-wing in this scale, but would need to use a parking lot as a play field

ok, maybe I'm thinking about this to much.

people are saying that 30 years later the tech and design hasn't changed much. so this got me thinking about the empire after Palpatines death, it fragmented. the Moffs and fleet commanders splinter fighting for control of what is left of the empire. the rebellion growing into the new republic clashing with random imperial factions here and there.

it would almost seem like this would be an even darker time than under the emperors rule, warfare across the galaxies like nothing seen before. resources lost or destroyed. never knowing where a battle might break out. this probably went on for years. so yes the rebels overthrew the tyrannical empire but just created smaller more aggressive clusters of the empire in constant battle for resources. the most cost effective way to develop new war machines in such I situation, I would think, is take what you have and try to make it better with as little cost as can be managed. taking a standard tie and giving it a tail gunner is a huge leap into this direction. giving a fragile swarm ship protection from the rear in a dog fight would be worth its weight in republic credits to increase the survivability in a fight.

I think this is 100% in the right direction, if what I said happened in the aftermath of the battle of Endor

@Kiloden: there's also the fact that just because the external look hasn't changed much doesn't mean the internal tech is comparable.

There wasn't much difference in style between monoplanes at the end of World War One and fighters at the end of World War Two, but there's a huge difference in construction, handling, targeting, weapons, and just about everything else. Ditto an F4 and an F117: both flying wing designs, both flown by the same air service, but with radically different strengths, roles, and tech.

Are you still trying to figure out how Zombies can maintain a certain level of deterioration and yet remain a viable threat just as long as they get plenty of living flesh in their diet?

Just enjoy the **** toy.

In other words stop messing things up by trying to pin everything down and just have fun... I am on board.

We fly'in in outer space and I don't cares how... now go over there, and start up the blaster cannons and the missile shooters!

Hot-Damnz!!! Here we are just a roaring and a killing!

:D

I'm really loving this thing. Red/Black/White is a pretty typical bad guy color scheme but let's face the facts here, The Empire's worn that jazz since the 70s so it works.

Seriously, this thing looks fantastic. Interesting though, how the Twin ion Engines are definitely not on the pods. That explains the "Cog" bits to so degree.

This truly is something to behold. I never thought I'd see something quite like this. So far, The Force Awakens is looking great.
