dice app anybody actually use it?

By Wayne Argabright, in X-Wing

Ok I have had the dice app for awhile and never used it in a game My phone came with some free app money so that's why i got it. Anyway i noticed it was recently updated so i was messing around with it last night and realized its really a pain in the neck to use or is it just me? yes the basic rolling is easy, simply shake the phone. but modifying dice seems like a pain in the neck? I do like the various sound effects! It just doesn't seem very intuitive to me. On a related note FFG should combine that app with one of the X-squad builders and a sound board!!!

I've used it in games where I only had my 6 core dice with me. In cases like that it can come in handy for extra dice needs - even if I just roll the three I have and then use the app to throw one extra red - things like that.

I've used it, but not lately. I never actually modified the dice. I just left the eyeballs and put the Focus next to it.

OK...I just tried it and...it's not too hard. I mean, it's not super easy, but it's not that bad. I dunno....I haven't actually tried to use it with a Mangler cannon or anything.

I use it every week and never had an issue, no real need to modify the dice as long as your opponents can see the screen and acknowledge your spending a token, saves me carrying around four kinds of dice and it makes noise when I roll which is good Because I am easily amused.

If it were a real pain, I'd probably keep an extra die and just put it on top of the one on the screen!

Yeah, for Accuracy Corrector Tie Advanced, I've thought about buying some of those cheap plastic blocks. I'd paint them red with little hit markers on them. Glue two together and just drop them down when I shoot.

Modifying dice is easy

Select your dice, hit modify, and hit the desired result

Havnt had to do it in xwing (either you get the focus or you don't); only armada with the several dice faces and modifying shenanigans

I stopped using it recently. Totally negative confirmation bias, but the app seemed to routinely roll worse than physical dice. I've been screwed out of several local tournies by some consistently flabbergasting results.

Sure enough, I pick up m actual dice and the results are worth it

I don't know if it's poor programming or if the app is "too fair," but it seems electronics are conductors the whimsy of green dice

Now just gotta work on not flinging the physical ones off the table...

Dice hate me...at least the dice for X-Wing. I think my next goal for a squad is to fill it with nothing but dice mitigation upgrades (reds and greens). That way i can go back to blaming poor flying for my losses instead of fickle dice. :)

ive never found it that useful. Its a flashy little ap but its just so much easier to actually use dice in my opinion

Real dice roll off the board or get eaten by babies and choke them to death, think of the children gadge!

Hacked, rigged, tampered with, unfair results... Banned! Physical dice only for me!

Yes all those things happen with physical dice too you know.

Oh daddy not this again, both are equally cheatable, it's hard to stop determined cheaters!

I don't have the app, but I played Imperial Assault the other day with someone who does. He said that he only ever uses the app on his tablet device because the phone is too small and he has to scroll through dice results. Don't know if that's a problem for X-Wing dice on the app.

I've had a few opponents use it. The dice are so small that I always had to really crane to see it, which felt like I was trying to catch them in a lie or something. Not a huge fan.

I've used it. No issues. Love the sound effects.

I have a note phone so seeing the dice is not a problem. I guess I just need to mess with it more. As I do like sound effects. Lol

got me thinking would be cool if you could input your upgrade cards into the phone so it would automatically do stuff like mangler canon. and or sensor Jammer. But also have a way to show it was done and a way to easily undo it if you take one of the crits that make your upgrade cards not usable.

I would never use a dice app. One out of many reasons I like to play X wing is that it is - unlike a computer game - something you can grab with your hands, something you have a physical connection. Same thing with dice. The feeling and movement during dice rolling is fun. I cannot understand why someone would ever use an app for that instead

It costs too much to just try it for me. If it was a free app I might try it, but I am already bringing actual dice to my games anyway...

It covers four ffg games and let's you roll stand dice as well for £3 that's a bargin, it'd cost me near £30 to buy the physical dice.

The way I see it real dice are better your after a random result the very nature of a computer is not to be random, so how can you guarantee random results from the app!?!

Even something that seems random will eventually conform to a pattern when a computer is involved

*** note term computer is used to describe phone/tablet after all they are still computers ***

nothing is truly random, if that's what you're getting at. All anyone can ever do is simulate randomness.

dice, for example, are not random at all. A physicist will soon tell you the truth of that, or just anyone who's discovered that rolling a certain way or putting some weight on a certain face will "influence" the randomness a bit.

computers have been simulating random chance since some of the very first video games and have continued to do so in just about every rts and turn based strategy game; the star wars dice app is no different.
