Missions for organised play - playtesters needed

By malladin.ben, in X-Wing

Hello all,

I recently ran a campaign weekend event for X-Wing (see my other thread here: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/182189-the-yavin-legacy-report-on-a-campaign-event/) wherewe played a lot of missions, using adapted versions of the official published missions that come in the core rules and various large box expansions.

Mission play in itself seems to have been a great success at the event, and got me thinking that it would be great if there was a mission-play alternative to the 100pt tournament death match we currently play so much of. Coming to X-Wing from Warhammer fantasy (and now looking much more likely to be focusing my attentions on xwing following the weekend's announcements from GW) there tends to be two different types of tournament, some where you just play the standard kill-each-other battleline scenario, and others where you play a random or pre-selected mission each round. This weekend proved that we have a great selection of fun and interesting missions already for this game that, with a few minor tweaks, could be a viable alternative for organised play to the standard tournament rules.

I'm not looking to replace the official rules. They have their place, and for the ultra-competitive events they are probably the best way of ensuring balance. But I do think there's space for alternatives, and having this as an offer can only help broaden the appeal of the game, both in general and at a tournament play level. I have spoken to players who don't play x-wing because it always just seems to be the same everyone-just-kill-each-other mission and doesn't have the variety of missions other games offer. Similarly I've spoken to regular xwing players who don't go to tournaments because of the competitive nature of the games and feeling like they wouldn't stand a chance. So, surely offering a mission-play event pack can only be a good thing? I had the privilege of speaking to Alex Davy at the UK Nationals a few weeks ago and he seems to be keen to try and promote the mission play side of things too.

Hence I have produced one. I have gone through the existing missions, tweaked them in light of what I learnt over the weekend, and produced a pack that would allow TOs to run a variety of their own mission play events.

But I know there's still a way to go before we get a perfect set of missions. So, I'm putting the call out for playtesters. Please find version 1.0 of the rules pack in the links below, and if you can get in a game of any of the missions let me know how it went. Any of you podcasters out there who want to help out, talk about it on your show, I'd gladly put myself up for interview too. We've got a great community for this game, lets see if we can make something special.

We've started playing some test games, so I've created a facebook group for gathering feedback. If anyone would like to join up, either to help out or just to lurk and find out what's going on, you can find us here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1600977653484841/.

If you're not facebook-active you could always PM me your feedback on here, or post it to this thread.

Thanks for your help,

Ben
