Organizing Armada games

By Intys Rule, in Star Wars: Armada

In my FLGS, we have a "X-Wing night" every other Friday and it is a casual tournament with three rounds. We start at 6pm and usually finish by 9-10pm.

However, doing this for Armada seems impossible. At the most, it'll be two rounds in a night, so ideally, a whole day or at least the better part of an afternoon has to be set aside for this. Currently, it's 2 hours per round, soon to be 2.5 hours when Wave 2 comes out.

Does anyone have any ideas for a casual tournament format that maybe spans more than a single day?

You could try a league? One game against everyone in the league with so many weeks to get it finished.

Thanks for that reply! However, I'm not familiar with how a league works exactly. Care to explain?

Run it as one game a week for several weeks and just play a round robin. Say you have 6 players, maybe have the tournament last 8 weeks or if you think you can get two games in each week it would be monthly and encourage players to play one game each week. The extra weeks will allow real life to get in the way of gaming and not upset things too much. You probably should keep attendance sheets for each week, any unfinished games will become a bye win for the player with the better attendance.

I see! Thanks for that! However, what happens if for example one player can make all 8 games but everyone else can only make 7 or 6 games?

Or for example, Player A and Player B are scheduled to play each other on the next game but Player B cannot make it due to work/family concerns? What will happen in that situation?

In leagues I've joined in the past, the two players schedule their game themselves. Hopefully everyone in the league can find time to play their opponent within a week or so.

I think this is something best worked out by the guys themeselves.

Perhaps you add a week or two or you start handing out byes based on attendance or you may just get them to play on another night.

You could also look at Privateer Press's rule for what they call a Journeyman League. It's a very simple system. if I recall it's close to simply getting 3 points for a win and 1 point for a game/loss. In addition you got points based on how much you paint during the league but you could make that a take-or-leave option for Armada. Just a thought, it's simpler than trying to get people to meet up with all their different schedules. Not that that doesn't work for a lot of people.
