Spark of Rebellion Full Release!

Interesting take on the Mandalorians. Before reading this fanbook, I made a mandalorian human species myself, based on the ground set by the corelian human on "suns of fortune". In my version, mandalorians receive one rank in discipline (and can reach three ranks at character creation), considering their background as a martial and conquering people, resistant to the worse things the galaxy can throw at them. And I see mandalorian society organized upon military discipline (even the new mandalorians). Would you care to share the logic behind the fanbook take?

Thanks. First, of course it's all interpretation, and your take is just as valid as ours!

In retrospect the Ranged Light at rank 3 for creation could have been done (maybe it should), but it might have been a little unbalancing for other species to have a direct combat skill potentially this high this early. Of course you can balance with less Xp, but it's still a very good early boost.

The Knowledge Warfare as career came from the idea of "if you don't learn from history, you're doomed to repeat it". Not all Mandalorians are warriors, but with their history of conflict it seemed appropriate that children growing up would be taught battle history and strategy, either to use it or in a manner of "this is how we used to be, let's not go there again". PCs would likely be from the more militant factions of course. I imagined a Mandalore that was battered from the most recent Civil war, then slammed pretty hard when the Republic/Empire moved in, at first to help then later to control. Mandalore would likely be seen as a good source of academy material (hence the Mandalore Academy) but also a potential threat given their history. Direct military organisation, outside the Academy, would likely be illegal.

The intention here was to make a more nuanced role-playing option than simply another good shooter. Sabine is good with guns, but she also displays firm military tactics. Some of this may come from her academy days, some may be from her heritage. Hopefully we find out more in S2 about the current state of Mandalore.

Coolio, I was hoping someone would make rules for the T-7 ion disruptor rifle.....

Layout is always a PITA! ...

Mmmmmm...sounds delicious. Sign me up.

(Sorry...I couldn't resist. Also, I'm not actually sorry)

Great... now I'm hungry... thanks alot.

I know you have already published the full version of the supplement, but new info published in the Databank complicates the Fort Anaxes section. From Fort Anaxes' Databank entry:

Fort Anaxes was a remote military base on the planet Anaxes during the Clone Wars. After war's end, a cataclysmic event obliterated the planet, though miraculously, Fort Anaxes remained intact. The facility became a fuel depot and meeting place for those who required privacy in their dealings. Unbeknownst to visitors to Fort Anaxes, it had also become home to a colony of vicious fyrnocks nested on the massive rock.

Also, Ezra's Duel with Danger establishes that the name of the asteroid that Fort Anaxes is located on is PM-1203.

I asked about the Ion Disruptor before, about the "Ion Setting" quality. You might be better off making an exception than a new rule, saying that it deals wound damage to droids and organics as normal. That's kind of the vibe I got from the show -- the weapon is so intense that it cooks organics.

I did answer this before

It's a tough one. Ion weapons don't affect organics, yet this weapon was used against the Lasat. One way to think of it is that the Ion Setting is the default, anti vehicle mode, but it can be switched off, kind of like 'disabling the safeties'. This wasn't intended by the designers, hence why it was banned once this mode of use was discovered. So it's a dual-mode weapon, like a stun setting on a blaster.

So another example. When they hit the AT-DP in the show, that's the weapons 'Ion setting', just like the Ion quality of a ships Ion cannon. The only reason for the word 'setting' is to show that it can be switched off, unlike most intrinsic qualities. Just think of it as having the Ion quality. The only other way to do it would be to introduce a mechanic where the ion also affects organics, which is nowhere else in the game (iirc). I agree with you that it's not exactly how it is intimated in the show, but a little creative license was preferable to changing the whole nature of a particular weapon quality in the game mechanics.

Hope that's helpful? Of course, agreed to disagree and run it how you'd like, as always :)

Hey all. We've gone ahead and released a new version based on a bunch of feedback from the community.

You can grab it at the D20 Radio site or at the new Rancor Publishing Group site.

Here are the release notes:

  • The group of players working on these projects now has a name! The name and logo have been added to the Credits page.
  • The appearance of stat blocks has been improved! The improvements include:

    ○ The size of the stat blocks has been reduced to match the width of the text columns.

    ○ As a result of the stat block images being made smaller, whitespace around the stat blocks has improved throughout the document. (ie, no more text running right into the stat blocks.)

    ○ The images have been "vectorized" so the text labeling each of the stats is still readable despite being sized down.

    ○ An issue with the stat labels being hard to read on black backgrounds has been corrected.

    ○ Numbers within the stat blocks have had their positioning improved. (Previously some numbers were off center a bit.)

  • New weapon images have been added courtesy B.A. Simon.
  • The Sensor Scrambler ship modification did not have a Rarity listed. It now has a Rarity 6.
  • The Westar-35 Pistol in Sabine's stat block had its damage lowered to match the previous adjustment to the same gun in the Player Options chapter.
  • The Blurrg-1120 Pistol has had Prepare 1 added to its qualities when in dual-fire Linked mode.
  • The Energy Slingshot has had its damage increased slightly and its range reduced from Medium to Short.
  • Several members of the Ghost crew have had their skills adjusted based on community feedback. Several abilities have been buffed, and a few have been added. Thanks to everyone who contributed their comments on these iconic characters!
  • Warjak (in the Gladiator Night encounter) had the incorrect stats. (He was emulating Rugor's style a bit too closely.) This has been corrected.

Hello. The filesizes of the PDFs differ on the D20 Radio site and the Rancor site. Which is the most current version? They both say Aug 6th in the credits page.

I didn't think anyone would notice, haha. The one on the Rancor site will always be the latest version (since we have direct control over the uploads there and I don't want to bug the D20 radio guys too much with minor revisions). In this case, there is literally only one word different - a minor typo from "on" to "in" that people may not even notice. It's such a minor change that I didn't update the date for this change. Good catch though. ;)

Thanks for that tip. I'll always fetch the Rancor version then. Keep up the great work on this. Love Rebels!

What is different in the updated version? Errata or additional material?

Thanks for doing this. I'm looking forward to seeing the one for season 2, especially with characters like Ahsoka, Rex, Wolffe, Gregor and Hondo Ohnaka now a part of the show. I'm also looking forward to seeing the Clone Trooper player option you come up with.

it's errata (missing skills etc) and typos (things like dice symbols) and improvement on the overall layout and tables etc.

Season 2 is definitely coming. Can't promise the clone trooper as a player option though.

As a more general point, while we will undoubtably include minor characters, we are probably going to steer clear of iconic characters such as Ahsoka. On the first book the absolute major, lets just say bone of contention, was the crew of the Ghost. Nobody ever agrees, and everyone has their own version in their head. Which is absolutely cool, and might be why FFG (generally) don't stat such characters.

I can't speak for the team, but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle to be honest, when we could use the space for other things.

“Bone of contention” is right. Wow.

I think Jaspor would probably be the guy to give the final call, but I definitely agree that it’s probably not worth our while to try to stat out the main characters. I don’t know that we’re ever going to go back and rip that out of the first book, but I doubt that we’re likely to do that kind of thing again.

Character stats are always contentious. Thus why I always chuckle when I see threads calling for them. I like how FFG has handled it. "These are the stats as they relate to this aspect of the game, subject to change."

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with the "avoid statting out major characters" angle. Although it did keep this thread active for longer than it would have been otherwise. ;P

I'm just going to leave this little teaser here:

More info coming soon. And before someone else brings it up, no we will not be selling or charging for anything. But we will help people get their own printed copies if they so choose... Stay tuned.

I always find it fascinating how people complain so vigorously about free things that other people put hard work into - especially when it's not a official project.

Also, big thumbs up for the printed hard copy versions!

Cool. Very nice.

I certainly would love to have a hard copy myself.

Are there different 'to print' files for this? Or was that made with the PDF that's available?

This looks very nice Jaspor. I'm also curious as to when the print files will be made available.

If you’re printing on a site like lulu.com, then you’ll want a separate wrap-around cover image that includes the spine, etc….

I don’t remember if we released that. I’ll try to remember to check sometime later today.
