Wrong boards, but holy ****...

Must admit I was thrown by it... All I know really is the 6 movies.

Well I've seen all of TCW and those episodes of Rebels that have been shown so far. There aren't many instances I can think of that constitute a magic item. There are a number of places, such as Dagobar, which are strong in the Force and there are also a couple of Force loci that are REALLY strong in the Force (Mortis, if that's the name of the planet) and wherever it is that Yoda visits in his arc in Season 6. Both these places are downright spooky. But they are still places and have the twin benefits (imo) of being both filled with living beings and it seeming more natural to have the Force converge on a planet than to converge on a suit of armour or whatever. (imo).

In terms of actual magic items, I can only think of a couple that may qualify. The sword in Altar of Mortis is clearly some kind of sacred relic and seems to have at least one mystical property that other weapons don't have (omitted because spoilers). That's it for magic items and it was in an extreme environment (really kind of a special Force environment). Holocrons might also qualify as they supposedly require the Force to unlock, though I've more put that down to needing to move lock mechanisms on the inside of them without touch.

Ah, I can think of one other. The thingamajigg-whatsit in the Bodata arc with Windu and Jar-Jar. There is both a globe which stores life energy and a sacred altar which may or may not have special properties of its own (or it could just be located in the right place).

So there HAVE been "magic items" in canon, before. But they've been contained within especially mystical arcs and are VERY exceptional. They have also had very defined uses in ritual, rather than being any kind of "pick this up gain a special power" sort of magic items. More sacred object than wand of fireballs.

Thanks for that, there must be more to this than just those examples though, FFG have so far kept within established Legends to my knowledge, so possibly in some of the umpteen novels out there? Your thoughts make me think that the system they will use willbe based on the Signature Vehicle system, thus limiting the number of these magic armours getting around.

Possibly. I think you can probably find everything up to and including fire-breathing dragons and Harry Potter in Legends. But I don't have any knowledge of it, I only know canon.

The most recent one that comes to mind is the Muur Talisman.

This isn't directed at you for posting it, but that is an example of everything I do not wish to see in canon and the reason why consigning things to Legends is a good move, imo.

More importantly, this pretty much confirms The Pattern:

Beginners Game, Core Rulebook, GM screen & adventure, Adventure Book, Career Book. . . .

Glad we have this nailed down for the next CRB!

Agreed to some extent. I think it can have it's place, that series was a fun and interesting read. I think it is a very elegant move what Disney did with the EU, relegating everything to Legends. Doesn't hinder my ability to enjoy it any less. That particular series also showed how you can have a story span the entire history of Star Wars without affecting/conflicting the core films. Something the writers of the new SW series needs to take a lesson from.

Agreed. I guess I'm okay with mystical items to a small extent, so long as they stay... mystical. There's a significant gap between mystical and magical. I don't mind having a little bit of spookiness in the Star Wars setting. Han Solo's "I've flown from one side of the galaxy to the other and I've seen a lot of strange stuff", essentially. That the galaxy contains forgotten corners where you can wander into the wrong area of some swamp-ridden planet (Dagobar) and have a dark vision that you're not sure if it's real or not, that mystics on Bardotta believe life force can be channelled into a strange sphere, or that Dathomiri witches cocoon their dead in such a way to preserve their bodies for later use (I always got a weird tech as magic vibe with them as in there were scientific explanations behind most of what they did but they blurred the lines with esoteric practices)... All these I'm actually okay with in the occasional Halloween-story. I like an ambiguous "maybe the galaxy is stranger than we think" vibe. Force ghosts and such fit into this. So I'm not COMPLETELY against this stuff. But I far prefer it to be lurking on the periphery of understanding. Ritual, not spellcasting. Sacred, not magic,
