Copenhagen Regionals Report
So, last weekend I participated in the 39 player Copenhagen Regionals and it went pretty well.
The weeks up to the tournament I tested three potential squads. The first one was the one that won me the Store Championship in Playoteket, Lund, Sweden.
Patrol Leader with
Darth Vader crew
3x Scimitar Squadron Pilot with
Proximity Mines
The second one was one I was comfortable playing but it did fail me (or the dice perhaps) in the Spring Kit Tournament in Playoteket, Malm ö , Sweden.
2x Blue Squadron Pilot with
Fire-Control System
Blue Squadron Pilot with
Fire-Control System
Ion Cannon
Gold Squadron Pilot with
Ion Cannon Turret
R3-A2 Astromech
BTL title
The third one was one I'd devised as early as when wave 5 was released but never actually used competitively.
Dash Rendar with
Outrider title
Heavy Laser Cannon
Predator
Chewbacca with
Millennium Falcon Title
C-3PO
Predator
As the last one was the one I had played the least most of my test games was played with this.
I soon found out that it had good options against most enemy squads. It performed especially good versus the popular Rear Admiral Chiraneau/Soontir Fel build as the combined fire power of both my ships could burn down the Rear Admiral pretty fast and with two ships vs. Fel I could keep Chewie as a buffer between Fel and Dash's "donut hole," even causing Fel to bump into Chewie occasionally to remove Fell's defensive token stack. With the positive results, I decided to go with this list. Shout out to Morgan Reid (world champion elect) for the games played on Vassal and the discussion on strategy.
On to the tournament
On the day it was really hot, so being in a room with 40 people meant I needed to drink through out the day to stay sharp. Having a first round bye from the Store Championship I won would also help in staying focused.
Game 1
As I had a bye I spent most of the first round looking at what lists where present. The one thing I found interesting was that there wasn't a single E-Wing present. That's correct, not a single Corran Horn.
The lack of TIE Defenders and TIE Bombers weren't that surprising even though I won my Store Championship using three TIE Bombers.
Record so far: 1-0 MoV: 200
Game 2
In my first game I faced a super nice Danish guy named Christian. He flew:
4x Thugs with Ion Cannon Turret, BTL title, and Unhinged Astromechs
and had managed to win 100-0 against a dual IG-88 list in the first round.
My plan was simple. Stay out of arc or at range 3 with Dash to avoid the Ions. If need be I'd throw Chewie in the enemy's way as long as being ionized wouldn't send me off the table in a round or two. As I brought the three largest debri fields as obstacles Dash had no trouble avoiding enemy fire and Chewie stayed at range 3 as well as much as he could manage to not take ion damage. In the end I lost two shields off of each of my ships while I destroyed all enemy ships.
Record so far: 2-0 MoV: 400
(That's me in the white shorts and Christian scratching his chin)
Game 3
Now I was matched against my friend Tommy, one of the Swedes who play in the same group as I and whom I traveled together with to the tournament. He just defeated M å rten, another Swede from our local group who also happens to be the winner of our Southern Sweden Regional (which I TOed). We played the same squads against one-other the Tuesday before as we prepared for the tournament. He flew:
Soontir Fel with
Push the Limit
Royal Guard Title
Autothrusters
Hull Upgrade
Rear Admiral Chiraneu with
Darth Vader crew
Proton Bomb
Predator
Engine Upgrade
Gunner
Here the plan was to stay at range 3 from the Rear Admiral with Dash and use Chewie as a bumper. Proper use of the obstacles and Chewie made that possible and once Chiraneau was down I used Chewie to block Soontir to push a lucky crit from Dash's Predator roll on the HLC through. With Blinded Pilot and Fel facing the wrong way, Tommy forfeited the game as he had only taken three shields off of Dash.
Record so far: 3-0 MoV: 600
Game 4
In round four I faced Mads, the Dane who won the other Danish Regional a few weeks earlier. He played:
Chewbacca with
Predator
Millennium Falcon Title
Engine Upgrade
Luke Skywalker crew
C-3PO
3x Tala Squadron Pilots
Here I needed to keep enemy Chewie out of range for as long as possible to remove the Talas as quickly as possible. The plan worked OK and finally it came down to my Chewie vs. his Chewie and in the end the game went to time with both our wookiees at 1 hull remaining. With his being quite more expensive he won with exactly twelve points.
Record so far: 3-1 MoV: 688
Game 5
So, with one loss, I had to win my last game to make the cut. My MoV was strong enough for sure to make the top of those who went 4-1.
In this decisive game I was paired against a Dane named Odin. And he turned out to be the nicest and most easy going of all my opponents. He played:
Kavil with
Blaster Turret
Aggromech
Palob with
Moldy Crow Title
Oppertunist
Blaster Turret
Guri with
Virago Title
Advanced Sensors
Inertial Dampeners
Lone Wolf
Autothrusters
This was a tense game where I won the initiative roll and elected to give it away to have Dash move after Kavil to hopefully stay out of range 2.
This I more or less managed to execute to perfection. He initially went for Dash but as he found himself unable to use his turrets against him he switched to Chewie. We both pulled of really spectacular maneuvers where I just barely kept Dash at range 3 most of the time.
The end game saw Guri gunning for a 1 hull Chewie while Dash kept gunning for her. Unfortunately for Odin I managed to destroy Guri when she was set up to get the kill shot on Chewie which resulted in a 100-0 win for me and Odin out of the top 8. Had he destroyed Chewie he'd made the cut. After the game we discussed the game and agreed on that the initiative roll was very important in this game. Odin was a super guy and I felt pretty bad for having eliminated him.
Record so far: 4-1 MoV: 888
After swiss I finished second (after Mads who defeated me) with the highest MoV of everyone.
Top 8
Another Rear Admiral/Fel build flown by a nice Dane named Ole. This was the first time he'd reached the top 8 in a tournament. This one featured:
Rear admiral Chiraneau with
Engine Upgrade
Predator
Gunner
Darth Vader crew
Yasanne Isard
Soontir Fel with
Autothrusters
Royal Guard TIE
Hull Upgrade
Push the Limit
Again I used the obstacles and Chewie to keep the Rear Admiral at range 3 from Dash and quickly burned through the Decimator. Then it was only a matter of time until I got some shots through Fel's defense. First hit was a crit that left the Baron double stressed as he'd used Push the Limit. An action-less Fel in the coming turn was a dead Fel.
Wim: 100-0
Top 4
This is where the fun ended. I faced fellow Swede Viktor, and his Brobot list:
IG-88 B with
IG-2000
Lone Wolf
Mangler Cannon
Inertial Dampeners
Advanced Sensors
Autothrusters
IG-88 C with
IG-2000
Predator
Heavy Laser Cannon
Inertial Dampeners
Advanced Dampeners
Autothrusters
Versus Brobots Dash can't keep at range 3 and trade shots if the IG isn't in arc so here I needed something else. The plan was to concentrate on one IG and try to force it to turn to get me in arc and hopefully block with Chewie. This failed miserably as I misjudged my aproach and was unable to barrel roll Dash out of arc.
Dash went down quickly to combined Brobot fire and then Chewie never stood a chance.
Loss: 0-100
At the end of the day I was very happy with my performance. I think I rank this result higher than my seventh place in the 2013 Nordics (the National for the Nordic countries) as so many more people play the game and at a much higher level now (but the blue maneuver tokens I got there are way prettier than the new black ones).
In the final, Mads (the guy who beat me in round 4 and finished first after swiss) defeated Victor and took his second Regional victory.
(Here you see Mads (right) receiving the trophy from Nikolaj (Forensicus - the guy who scanned the dice - here on the forums), last year's champion)
I want to end this report with a shout out to the TO, Vince Kingston who ran a smooth tournament and even bought ice cream to everyone when we were all about to melt away in the extreme heat.
