Chinese for Lunch

By jbmacek, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

We have a nice Chinese place across the street from where I work. After I pay the bill, I have this habit of tucking my fortune away in my wallet. This afternoon, while doing just that, I had the notion of taking them out and using each as a theme for each session in my upcoming Force and Destiny game.

A random draw from the wallet...

It's time to complete some unfinished business.

You have a yearning for perfection.

You will always see light after darkness.

Stillness versus motion. It's only a relative matter.

I wonder if there's a cookie out there with "Do or do not, there is no try" on it.

:D

What a splendid idea. It's like how each episode of The Clone Wars begins with a fortune cookiee saying. I feel like I want to buy a big bag of fortune cookiees now, and at the end of each session have one player draw the "fortune" for the next session.

Thanks, jb!

They must buy from a better fortune cookie maker than any we have. Shame really, cause many used to be good, but now they are more just banal sayings than a fortune of any kind. Really cool idea though!

Interesting, I wanna try!

"Help, I'm being held prisoner in a fortune cookie factory"

.......Rescue mission!

You will see light after darkness = what happened to Darh Vader in Return of the Jedi.

AWESOME!

Unhelpful fortunes:

Your shoes will make you happy today.

You are very talented in many ways.

cg4e93000581fe4.jpg

("It says, 'Do not raise your hands. Do not scream or show alarm. Just give all your money to the cashier when leaving and you will not be hurt.'")

cg4e9300ae2b280.jpg

("I hate it when a fortune cookie starts out 'Don't look now...'")

And my personal favorite, an oldie but a goodie which I routinely "read" with a bemused expression when opening a fortune cookie,

"Your vocabulary is mean and impoverished, but entirely adequate to express your thoughts."

I love this idea! Definitely borrowing it for my campaign.

I love this idea, as I mentioned earlier. Today I picked up some extra fortune cookiees with my lunch. Looking at them, I'm trying to come up with some quick ideas of how I might use them in the game..

Some are easier than others.

"Do not give up, the beginning is always the hardest." This session can start off with a difficult encounter to beat. Or it can be about having resolve to get the job done.

"Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless." This session can have a substantial diplomatic element or encounter to it. Or it can be about the past coming back to haunt the PCs (or benefit the PCs).

"A friend asks only for your time and not money." In this session, an NPC they've dealt with before comes back to ask for, or cash in, a favor. Hijinks ensue.

Some are not so easy. What would be some ideas for these?

"A merry heart does good like a medicine."

"Accept compliments and give praise."

"A merry heart does good like a medicine."

The PCs visit a dying vagabond. Medically, there's nothing they can do but fulfill his last wish of seeing his family or pay respects to the Jedi who saved his life during the Clone Wars. Or the PCs just need to cheer up some ill orphans.

My favorite was simply "don't panic"

"Accept compliments and give praise."

Social encounter keying off a character's Morality. Say his Morality Strength is Independence, and he doesn't take compliments very well, which could lead to some detrimental diplomatic situation with the native villagers. Or his Morality Weakness is Arrogance, and he finds it hard to give praise where praise is due. Maybe he feels like they don't deserve it, and it can lead to hostility.

"We're out of the 'you will find happiness with a new love' cookies!"

"Eh, open the 'stick with your wife' barrel."

Never will forget the time I was eating at a Chinese restaurant before a medical exam & my fortune was "Don't make any long term plans..."

O.O

Came here to post this very image. My wife actually got that one once, too.

Did you know there is nothin "Chinese" about fortune cookies?

Totally an American invention.

Did you know there is nothin "Chinese" about fortune cookies?

Totally an American invention.

Just like what most of us Americans know as "Chinese" food.

True.

In that case, if you'd like, I could go to my bookcase instead.

"Tradition was once function.

But today there is no tradition.

Where is there a true path?"
