X-wing "emergency"

By Bloodstripe Baron, in X-Wing

I have a 4x4 mat and have been wanting to try a 2V2 on it with each (opposite) person basically playing a normal game against his or her opponent. would get interesting trying to dodge the other (non combatant) ships! while trying to zero in on your own target. would think a normal 3x3 mat would be too crowded for such a game..

Storm Squadron Pilot + 2 Black Squadron Pilots with no upgrades comes to 51 points. Close enough for an intro game, with no weird rules, and keeps a real classic movie theme. All have the same PS so they all get to act at the same time also.

I agree with the Keep It Simple people, but also think that you should play with some of the major characters. Han, Luke, Darth Vader - all very recognizable for even the casual fan.

Most new players want to play X-Wing because it's Star Wars, and they want to see characters they know. They don't want to play Space Dogfighter with random pilot no one has ever heard of. But just because you play with Han, you don't have to make him optimal. Just play Han in the Falcon and they'll be super happy. You can throw Chewbacca on for flavor if you want, and just explain if it ever comes up what he does.

Actually believe or not, what sold me on X-wing was that they had the book pilots e.g. Tycho, Wedge (but based more on the books than the movies), Horton Salm etc.

That said, I would agree that most people would want to play because with the main characters, I'm just different like that :D

She won so I win.

We ended up flying a Luke with r2d2, y with ion, bwing and red squadron x vs 2 academy ties, lambda shuttle, vader and a ptl royal guard. She flew rebels, picked apart the shuttle with a couple good attacks and had a lot of fun!

So, she will play again?

So, she will play again?

Yep. She's already asking me about it.

When teaching someone....always let them win....

Well, maybe not "let".

Allow the reversal of mistake, and teach them what you would have done there, sure. Maybe build them a rock-solid list while you're going with something more experimental. Don't condescend, though.

As did I. :)

Funny enough, I've been teaching my wife to play - she loves the Cool Arc-Dodging Upgrade Ships (We boardgame a lot, so Cool Combos are her catnip) so I think I'll pass her Vader, Soontir and a Popemobile for spaceship shenanigans all over the place.

And then brush up on my flying X-wings with a bunch of generics. ;)

Still curious what to do with the last portion of the points, though. Perhaps an R2-D2 Blackmoon instead of a 4th X-wing, for that Corran-lite feel (Moves after Vader & Fel, but before the Shuttle)? Hm. I want to be flying 'simple' ships, but not 'boring', else she'd cotton on. :P

Edit: Ah-HA! It's beautiful!

Knight School (100)

Blackmoon Squadron Pilot (29)
R2-D2 (4)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Rookie Pilot (21)
Rookie Pilot (21)
Rookie Pilot (21)
By beautiful, of course, I mean it looks perfectly reasonable, but is simple to combat against (Because it's the enemies special capabilities that will throw a new player more than their own), and should prove to be good practice on my end (I need to fly those ships more often!) without being condescending. :D

If new players, personally I would try for a Furball - all against all, 32 point builds, no large ships and I would at this stage no named pilots and no R2D2!. Great fun and quick and very casual.

Bit late for your original, post but for future interest.

Actually, you don't have an emergency at all!

You have a wife who is actually willing to try out and play X-wing. :)

True statement. She's willing to play. I've been trying to get my wife to play. She's afraid that she's going to be no good and I'll be disapointed in her and that she's get creamed. That goes true for most strategy games though. I should have never told here that I was in chess club in 5th grade and I was one of three kids who could beat the teachers. Of course, I don't think I should admit the chess club part to anyone.
