Have you thought about a short, verbal, interview on Skype/Hangouts/something else? Maybe interview is the wrong word for it, I am not suggesting a test or whatever. Just a short discussion to get to know the person's preferences. Even THAT won't guarantee anything, but it should increase the chances of finding a good fit, and a good fit is more likely to stay. Heck, I'd say something like "contact me on skype for a brief discussion on what type of campaign this will be" and then don't even ask them anything, just tell them YOUR preferences and get their feedback. That way it is hopefully less stressful on the potential player, and you immediately get a rough idea of compatibility.
Issue with gaming via Roll20 or issue with gaming online?
I could try the interview idea.
Maybe add to my invite ad "Those wanting to join should send a message with when they would be available for a 5-10 minute Google Hangouts chat. This chat will be to determine their fit with the group and their expectations of the gameplay. Additional time may be allocated if they are invited after that to familiarize them with the Roll20 system and character sheet."
IMO, everyone needs a Session 0 chat, even if the game is ongoing and you’re just welcoming a new player to the game.
And it might be a good idea to re-do the Session 0 chat with all the players every so often, to make sure that everyone is still having fun and on the same page, etc….
But maybe that’s just me. YMMV.
Brad, that is a great idea, I already rewrote my expectations, but I will talk to the folks on Tuesday and reset/remind about expectations, and see that I am meeting their expectations as well.
Thank you for the idea.
