Pre-ANH Han Solo Film Announced

By TasteTheRainbow, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Whilst I am excited to see anything new and SW .. I would prefer it if they stayed away from origin stories. One of the great things about the SW universe that George Lucas created was the depth. Throw away lines helped enrich the universe. Eg. "The bounty hunters we ran into at Ord Mandell ..", "No disintegrations", "I used to bulls eye Womp Rats in my T-16 .."

Each of these lines adds a little depth to the universe and its history. I like that we can use our own minds to fill the blanks and don't need to be spoon fed every minute detail.

Han is a charismatic, enigmatic smuggler. How did he get into smuggling? Why is his best mate a Wookie? Why does the Falcon have such a reputation? Why are Lando and Han's history and friendship a little sketchy? Leave that to each us to ponder and answer ourselves.

Personally, I'm happy they are doing some good things with the SW license .. but I'd prefer to see something from the SW universe that does not include an established main character and his/her backstory. The SW universe is a big place, with a lot of interesting characters. There are far more (and possibly better) options for a good story available to us.

Is she named Michael Cera?

I too like those disposable universe filling lines.

40k was great when it was full of mystery but people have killed all that by demanding day by day accounts of the origin of everything...

One of my 'disliked' EU books 'tales from the mos eisley cantina' is a prime example of being 'naff' by making every single thing that happens around the cantina that relates to the film open up. Every minor patron of the bar is a super hero with an often daft back story.

Lord and Miller means this will be an awesome film. I am psyched for this film.

That's the same thing all my friends said. I guess I need to go watch their other stuff now.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a decent kids film.

The Jump Street movies are hilarious.

As for the Lego Movie...

I have faith that this will be a fun film.

A movie about how Han met Chewie and won the Falcon from Lando? I'm in!

Not just meeting Chewie. Explaining why Chewie owed him a debt. Is that even canon still?

Please don't let this be another X-men origins Wolverine...

Makes me miss the Young Indiana Jones show though.

The first Wolverine movie wasn't completely awful. The second one got pretty silly though.

I just don't want kid Solo. We saw kid Anakin and we all know how that turned out. Teenage, early 20s Han Solo is okay.

I hope we don't get early teens Han. Otherwise, it's going to be "hand solo".

When Han met Chewie

I'm not sure that works as a concept: the diner scene just doesn't work the same way when you replace Meg Ryan with a Wookiee.

I still want to see a TV show "Rogue squadron" and have it done like the old "Black sheep squadron series" I mean that has syfy channel written all over it!! if done in an ADULT version like BSG it would/could be great. we already have rebels to placate the kids..lol although i do watch it as well when i actually stumble on to it and its not conflicting with something. The series could also be used to set up movies.

I think it's one of the worst ideas. Prequels ALWAYS suck. Always. Every prequel sucks. There are no exceptions. If Disney wants a ton of money why don't they just make a new Star Wars Space Sim game and charge 90 bucks for it?

Prequels don't always suck. Often maybe even usually but not always.

I'll stand by Crabbock on this one fella .. and to back it up .. should you provide us both with a fitting example of a prequel that doesn't suck, both Crabbock and I will play our next game with the ship and upgrades of your choosing (if we have it) - that's right Crabbock, we're putting our money were our mouth is .. and we're all in.

if it was KOTOR III I would be all over that!!!! well maybe 90 bucks is a bit steep..lol perhaps if it came with a free T shirt???

the KOTOR stuff isn't exactly a prequel though. It's not setting up characters that we ALREADY know how they turn out. It's not anyone's already established backstory. If they made an Old Republic film it would likely be an all new character cast, and would involve an all new plot, so we have zero knowledge of how events unfold.

And for the record, I do not consider alternate timeline films to be prequels. Like JJ Abrahms Star Trek films - since they are on an alternate timeline, Anyone can die, any ship can be destroyed, Kirk could become a drug dealer, Spock could switch to a career in Musical Theater, and Uhura could become a Klingon Male, while Scotty learns to use the Force.

Prequels suck because Uhura can NEVER become a Klingon Male, and Scotty NEVER becomes a Jedi.

X-Men: First Class is a solid movie. And we knew everything about where those characters were going.

The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles weren't horrible and neither was X-Men: First Class as Taste the Rainbow mentioned. For that matter neither of you listed the prequels you have seen in support of your claim.

I think its highly dependent on the studio trying to make a great movie and not just riding the coat tails of the successful brand name. There is a significant difference in quality in all of the Marvel Studios films and all of fox/sony films. Xmen and spiderman in themselves are great well known stories, And fox/sony have each capitalized on them through the thousand reboots. Yet each time they always seem to fail to meet expectations. Marvel Studios on the other hand has only made 2 movies I didn't really care for: Iron Man 2 and the Incredible Hulk. But neither of those even compare to things like Electra, Wolverine, the Hulk, Fantastic Four, etc.

I mean hell, the new Fantastic Four has dr doom as a hacker. Sure Marvel and SW are different, but I like to hope that Disney is capable of ensuring both brands exceed expectations.

And here are some prequels that imo, didn't suck
Xmen First Class
the Hobbit (the first one at least)
Casino Royale
Batman Begins (I'm not sure that one counts)
Monsters University
Minions
