only messing. Originally they were called 'Imperial Army', usually things like 'Army 87 Sun Crushers' etc, then around WD109 they started to be called imperial guard. It was also a *fantastic* army list for them in WD109.

Previously they had a bloody terrible couple of pages in 'chapter approved' and very odd squads that didnt have much interesting.. .usually nine guard with lasguns and one with a flamer. WD109 brought in rough riders, ogryn squads, ratlings etc etc

Yup, that was back when they had Beastmen squads too! Their best source of close combat troops!

Yup, that was back when they had Beastmen squads too! Their best source of close combat troops!

I kinda undesrtood wht they phased those out. Back then chaos could also take beastmen squads. It would be a bit awkward having beastmen on both sides.*

Army commander: "Look i just wanna make sure we get our own beastmen back after the battle and none of that chaos filth. Then again better not take any chances. Activate the bomb harnessess!"

Ah penal legionaries and beastmen with bomb harnessess. One more thing we'll never see from stockholder-controlled GW anymore. Guardsmen blowing themselves up shouting "Emperor ackbar!" isn't very PC these days...

109 is a great WD: It also got rules for terminator squads. They had Terminator armor. (natch!) Interestingly enough you could equip all squads with jump packs!

£25 for a dice shaker, anyone? £20 for a bit of metal with a hole drilled in it that you can wear around your neck?

Edit: At this juncture, I would just like to point out that Dark Elves are listed amongst Age of Sigmar's "Forces of Order".

Out of curiousity, how many of you that are raging about Age of Sigmar have actually played a game of it yet?

Out of honesty, not me. I haven't bought it, I don't plan on buying it, or anything to do with it, ever.

However, I have downloaded the free 4-page "rules". So if I can actually persuade anyone to play along, I'm more than happy to use my existing collection of Warhammer models for a couple of skirmishes. That's a mighty big "if", though, especally when we've got balanced games of X-Wing with fully-realised rulesets we could be enjoying instead.

What i wanna know is how many people are playing this without immediatly needing to houserule things?

The game actually works fine without house rules, especially if it is a pick up game between friends. You aren't going to see friends play where one brings just the models in the starter set, and the other brings an army that would have been priced at 4000pts. Granted, at our first organized game night we had a guy show up with 200 Black Orcs, and another with 7 Vampires... because they both wanted to try and break the game. The Vampire player won because he got a Sudden Death victory on the bottom of turn 1.

My LGS has implemented few house rules that work for us:

1. Named heroes are 0-1 - It doesn't make sense to have 4 Nagash's running around.
2. Measure to the base, not the model - This is just for simplicity sake. It makes sense for us as it is something we have been doing for years, so you can't get a range boost because your model has a very long lance.
3. When counting for sudden death, count wounds not models - The store owner looked at the starter set, and the Sigmarites get the Sudden Death victories because they are outnumbered model wise, but it doesn't make sense because wound wise they are on par with the Khorne forces.
4. Summoned units can not be activated until the movement phase. - Pink Horrors that were summoned by Pink Horrors, that were summoned by Pink Horrors, that were summoned by Pink Horrors, all in one turn... no.
5. Player acting to receive bonuses are not mandatory - I don't have to cry out "For the Lady" to receive a reroll for my Grail Knights, you are allowed to kneel with Settra without fear of losing the game, and you don't have to compare moustaches to get the bonus for Kurt Helborg. I mean, you can if you want to, but you don't have to.

And that's it. There is a document floating around that Games-Workshop Toronto posted for an upcoming tournament that makes too many unnecessary changes to the game. Those changes listed above help to balance things out a bit without changing the core mechanics

Looks like your LGS is doing it right.

But if you look at it all 5 of the house rules are meant to fix major things that where introduced in AoS. Does that sound like "the game works fine without house rules." to you?

I'll say two things :

1. AoS works fine WITH houserules.
2. Games shouldn't need house rules to fix things. (house rules should be minor tweaks)

Oh yeah and no putting bases on other players bases without asking permision.

Yeah you really shouldn't need to parley before every game, or make up your own point's system to get a fair game.

Of course the two armies in the starter are supposed to be balanced but it's very clear people using their existing armies are having real issues with fairness.

The more i read about the big book comming out , the more i get the feeling the free scrolls are a stopgap mesure at best. (like that lil' armybook they put with the WD when they chaged to 5th(?) edition) Either that or we got drafted for beta testing...

GW designer: "Well we can't force them to rebase their armies, let's make the bases void."

Desginer #2: "What? And measure from the model? 'Tis worth a try I guess. Stick it in the rules."

Designer #3: "Ugh, balancing is hard! Can't we just let them play with everything?"

Des #2: "We'll let them figure something out for themselves and print it in book II."

Yeah thats GW for ya. But then again it's a luxury item. I'm more pissed ff about the main book clocking in at 75 euros. Atleast 15 euros more than I'm willing to pay for it. (I can get a full boardgame for that price! jeez!)

Actually, yes. Although, I should have phrased what I said better. The game does work fine with no house rules. Our gaming group has played over a dozen games since AoS was released, with no modifications, and every game played was fun, easy to follow, and surprisingly well balanced. Even the games that used the starter set were fairly close, but always wound up with the sigmar forces having a slight advantage.

The reason we decided to add in some house rules is partially because our particular group plays very heavily on the tournament scene, with several of our members being recognized as some of the top Warhammer players in North America. Because of that, we are trying to come up with ways to create a balancing system for tournament play that doesn't drastically alter the game play. We also want to solidify a set standard for our group, which fluctuates weekly in the people who come out, so that everyone is on the same level.

The only real change to the mechanics that were made were counting wounds instead of models for sudden death, and that was done simply for a way to balance a force in a competitive sense. If you take the three Bloodthirsters from Chaos Daemons, by the way the rule stands, if your opponent has 4 models, you get the sudden death victory options. However, when you look at the wound count, those Thirsters have 42 wounds, meaning your opponent now has to have 56 wounds for you to get sudden death.

Whether or not my gaming group has decided to use house rules or not is irrelevant. The game can stand on its own without them and still be a solid game.

Before you guys go passing judgement, I heartily recommend you get in a game or two and actually experience the game. You may find that you really enjoy it and have fun. Personally, I have gone from being hell-bent on selling my Bretonnians to now being on the fence and contemplating whether I really want to go through with that or not. I have sold armies in the past and regretted it at a later date, I'm not sure if I want to do that again.

It's certainly a very different game then what we are used to from warhammer.

From the lack of armybooks (wich GW invented!) to the biggest change in stats since 2nd edition!

So i think a lot of people hate it for not being warhammer anymore.

Now people are free to do what they like, but I don't get why anyone would sell the army they colected and painted. Well there's the need for money/ funds for a new army/hobby. And I've sold my copy of advanced space crusade, but in my defence, those models were unpainted, badly put together (by me. One with the deathspitter kept falling over) and I'm a chaos guy at heart, not a 'nid fan, so that box went.

Instead of selling, you could also set it on fire. or freeze it and smash it with a sledgehammer.

Well, put it this way. I have played Fantasy since 6th edition, when the Bretonnians were released. My gaming group meets weekly, alternating between 40k and Fantasy every week. I would go out every week to play either system. Shortly after 8th edition was released, I cut back to only playing 40k.

With Age of Sigmar, I am interested in playing Fantasy again. Even if it is not exactly the same game. I honestly think 8th edition did more harm to Fantasy as a game than anything else. Then again, part of my frustration with 8th edition was that it made my Dark Elves an illegal list. When they switched from requiring 3 core units to requiring a percentage, I was not able to field a legal list because I based my core around 3 units of 10 crossbowmen.

So far, with the few games I have played, I have enjoyed Age of Sigmar more than I enjoyed playing Fantasy in many years.
