My LGS owner was showing me one of the new Sigmar troops, apparently he got one from someplace. The thing is freaking huge. About the size if not a bit bigger then a Space Marine Terminator.

As far as I know, the Warhammer old world being a planet somewhere in the 40k galaxy was something suggested in some of the really old Warhammer fluff but that GW has tried to walk back from for years. I always had the impression that it was something one of the studio guys said back when GW was cool, but then the suits decided they didn't want the settings link for the very reasons you just said. They are different games and despite the similarities there is no need for GW to keep the 2 settings tied together.

All that said, they have apparently advanced the timeline significantly for age of sigmar. From what I have read, after the end times there was something of a golden age where sigmar united the assorted alternate dimensions he found and ruled in peace for thousands of years (or maybe just hundreds, it's a little vague), then chaos wrecked everything and he retreated to the celestial realm to regroup for another few thousand years before launching the campaign that is "game present".

So, even IF the old world is a planet in the eye of terror, the stuff occurring in age of sigmar may not be happening until M46 or later.

I seem to recall that in the Liber Chaotica books that Black Library put out, oh, ten years ago, that there was still a link between the universes of Warhammer fantasy and Warhammer 40k.

Alright, I am going to throw a wrench into this complaint fest of a thread. I played a game of AoS and... I enjoyed it.

I played a rather small game with my Bretonnians against my friends Lizardmen. It went back and forth, and we opted that instead of doing the stupid dances to get a bonus, we would just get any bonuses that were listed there. So my Grail Knights would reroll to hit despite not having to shout out "For the Lady!"

It was actually kind of refreshing to play a game of warhammer without having to worry about strength vs toughness, ws vs ws, bs + modifiers, save modifications, combat resolution. It is a very slick game that is easy to play. Talking with one of the guys at the LGS when we played, he mentioned that this feels very similar to the changes when Fantasy went from 5th to 6th in that GW put out all of the rules for all of the armies right away. Yeah, they gave us the core system here, but it would make sense for them to release and update lists as they go, as well as adding to the game.

So I am in the boat of "time will tell"

Alright, I am going to throw a wrench into this complaint fest of a thread. I played a game of AoS and... I enjoyed it.

Most of the guys at my FLGS seem to be pretty positive about it. I have several concerns, though none of them are really big ones.

First, the total lack of any sort of balancing factors. 20 goblins vs 20 giants.

Then, all the silly rules. Yeah, it is not particularly difficult to simply house rule that you don't have to do the silly stuff, but you shouldn't HAVE to to that.

The base game rules themselves don't look particularly bad, but those two points taken together make the whole thing feel like a half-assed attempt. that the designers really didn't care about producing a good game, they just to thew something together because they were told to, so they put together whatever they could come up with in an afternoon. That does not bode well for the future of the game.

Next, the setting. Although I have some issues with the GW settings, I have always thought that they were the best thing GW had going for them. Yeah, the Warhammer Old World was basically a generic fantasy Tolkien knock off, but it was a generic fantasy Tolkien knock off with 30 years of continuous, unique development. However it started, it was its own thing now, but because GW couldn't own the terms elf and dwarf they chucked all that out the window and plan to start over. The providing full rules for all the previous armies was a necessary step, but according to reliable rumors most of those armies are not going to see further development or support. The whole thing really feels like a stop gap measure to string existing players along until they get their age of sigmar, trademarkable armies up and running, then the old armies will gradually be squatted. Hope I'm wrong about that, but that is what it feels like.

The last issue is a meta one. This is still GW. I have seen them claim to turn over a new leaf too many times to believe that they can keep this from getting fubared fairly quickly.

So, like GML, I am in a wait and see mode.

All that said, from what I have read the new setting does show some promise, even if it is comically similar to 40K background, and the the new Stormguard Eternals are very nice looking models.

My biggest gribe was army selection really... Then you got the silly rules wich are easily fixed (Helborg works if you have a mustache or not) Otherwise the rules seemed odd but workable. So far the biggest complaints I've heard are: "No summoning!" and "Don't you dare put your model on my converted base!" The setting was over the top cheesy, but i don't mind.

Then they started messing with chaos...

Urge to kill rising! Rising! I'll guess we'll soon learn more of what's going on.

Small games work but large scale it's a mess and warhammer is the large scale game 40k was meant to be the skirmish game.

Miniwargaming a well known site has declared the game unplayable without a points system and they've played dozens of games in the first few days.

Other battle reports on you tube have also left me far from impressed either one side steamroller the other or it becomes a mess in the middle with both sides summoning more and more units onto the board.

Summoning is flat out broken with greater demons summoning other great or demons, or slaan able to summon any model in their army, you can set up four models and be fielding hundreds by turn four.

Whether the game works or not, it's still absolutely disgraceful that GW effectively erased 30+ years of creativity form it's team. The Warhamer world, it's history, geography, characters, notable events, stories, races, factions, it's very identity... all gone...

...for no other reason apparently than GW wants all it's products to have copyrightable names.

I'm still disappointed no one picked up on my Dwarves / Duranduran joke.

With the dwarfs (I'm not calling them Durandal or however they are called now) I was more intrested in the Disposessed keyword. At first i tought the empire and elves would also have it, but nope. Only the dwarfs have it. (GW still calls them dwarfs on the warscroll cover instead of dwarves. 'sup with that?) So I guess only the stunties really miss the warhammer world and the other ones are like meh screw the old world!

Also the lizardmen have gone full on stargate and have pyramid spaceships.

GW has been doing this since they redid the Imperial Guard and called them the Astra Militarum. This is all from that incident when they tried to claim copyright against the author who had "Space Marine" in the title of a book. Since then, everything has changed to words they can copyright.

All of the Space Marine codices now are being called "Codex Adeptus Astartes: <Chapter Name>."

Look at the paints, they went from "Chaos Black" and "Ultramarine Blue" to "Abaddon Black" and "Macragge Blue"

To be honest. I still call my Imperial Guard the Imperial Guard. I get the copyrighting of names thing. That is a level of business I can deal with. All they did was change the name for themselves in the eyes of the law. It doesn't mean the fan base has to adhere to it in their personal time. I will draw a parallel in sports. I'm from Toronto, our baseball team is the Blue Jays. The stadium they played in for years in downtown Toronto was called the Skydome. Then Rogers - a Canadian telecommunications company - bought the stadium and the team and re-named the stadium the Rogers Centre. I don't call it that. None of my friends call it that. My parents and their generation don't call it that, hell the younger generation doesn't even call it that. It will forever be the Skydome. I feel the same way about the Ass Militia- I mean Astra Militarum- I mean Imperial Guard. But that's just a name, it doesn't change the actual idea. They didn't slap power armour on Guardsmen, they didn't change the colours and pigments of the paint nor did they give the baseball players hockey sticks or make them use tennis balls. In my opinion that is not the sort of change I will bemoan. What I do have an issue with is changing the fundamental groundwork of a game that I have played for years that I have invested time, effort and a lot (like a whole crap-tonne) of money into. It would be like FFG showing up and saying we're changing all the dials and point costs of all your ships and adding new actions, removing old ones and saying X-wings and Ties could fly next to each other in the same list. (Unbound squad lists).

As a Guard player of many years (also a marines, tau and tyranids player) I was very happy with the new IG book, it was just the 40K rules that got worse. I've been playing since 3rd. 4th was great. 5th added many new things without totally breaking the game but 6th turned 40K into mini apocalypse and 7th I have played very few games of due to my utter disdain for how they've altered the rules, specifically surrounding the FOC and scenarios.

Age of Sigmar looks interesting as a game. Like I said before I don't quite get it yet. But I felt the same way about Armada when I first started that coming from X-wing. The main issue I see regarding AoS is that it is not WFB as I (and evidently some others) would like it to be. I have very fond memories of lining my Empire up against my foes, jousting and cannoning, hand-gunning and hoping my halberdiers had enough models to take out some Ogre Bulls or a unit of Cold Ones. I would be very interested to play some Age of Sigmar but like has been stated before, I may be looking to find some "Oldhammer" players willing to get a couple games in, in the good old fashioned way.

Obviously this is just my personal opinion.

only messing. Originally they were called 'Imperial Army', usually things like 'Army 87 Sun Crushers' etc, then around WD109 they started to be called imperial guard. It was also a *fantastic* army list for them in WD109.

Previously they had a bloody terrible couple of pages in 'chapter approved' and very odd squads that didnt have much interesting.. .usually nine guard with lasguns and one with a flamer. WD109 brought in rough riders, ogryn squads, ratlings etc etc
