Gunner's Beginner Repaints

By gunner1764, in X-Wing

Hello everyone. I have gotten around to painting a couple of minis and thought I would post the results! Let me know what you think. I started off pretty simple trying some small touch-ups on the shuttle and x-wings, and then I did some work on a phantom. I'll continue to add to this thread as I paint more ships. Please keep in mind that I have no painting experience whatsoever, and these few ships are my very humble beginnings. I have learned quite a bit in the process so far, and feel that I get better with each ship. = )

Helpful tips and suggestions are most welcome!

The blend on the x-wing engines wasn't as smooth as I would have liked. i tried several times to redo the transition layers using different technique, but found it very difficult to do with the small space and the recessed area.

I did my best at Wedge's, R2-D2, and a stressbot (which is the one out of focus in the back). The droids were a lot of fun to paint, despite the ridiculous size.

I'm happy with the way the phantom turned out, and it is a bit darker than the picture suggests. I will probably go back in and redo the cockpit at some point to try and make it a bit more uniform in color.

Very nice! I might suggest giving the engines on the shuttle a glaze (like Games Workshop's Guilliman Blue). It will tint the white center just slightly and intensify the color around the edges just a little.

I'm hardly a expert painter, but I think your X-Wing engines look good, the droids are great, and I really like the green panels on the Phantom. If anything, I think you should work a little on taking photos in a better-lit area. The flash on your camera is washing out the minis! :)

Great work! neat and good technique. Amazing for a beginner!

Ok, round 2 of our painting attempts coming up! The first is my wife's first repaint, of a b-wing:

Here is my wife's second repaint, this time of the Firespray:

This next one is a small repaint/touchup of the Decimator. I added some metallic ramming "caps" to the front, changed all the blue lights to a nice, Imperial red, and added cockpit detail and engine glow.

And lastly, a full repaint of the Tie Defender. Right after i started repainting I thought that I had bit off a bit more than I could chew! But I ended up just going slow and steady and took it piece by piece. The blue could be a little darker, IMHO, but i'm very happy with the overall result. I took some good lessons from some of Sixwood's comments on his repaint thread (if you haven't seen it, it is simply incredible: http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/136739-outer-atlantic-fleet/?hl=atlantic ) for the cockpit detail, and really like how it turned out. I'm also very happy with the engine glow:
