Is the new Connor Net going to mess up my Tantive IV?

By downsizedsandals, in X-Wing

I'm with you chadwick, but I do think the corvette is still to easy to kill for it's points. I would agree that in an epic game, some of your points should be required to be spent on a huge ship. this prevents either player from bringing a swarm that wipes out the other huge ship.

I still think they need to tweak the epic rules a bit more, as the big ships still seem fragile for their points and size. hopefully, they will keep tweaking the rules. the tweaks they have made so far have helped, but I don't think they have fully alleviated the problem. Like you, I play for fun, with the occasional competitive event thrown in.

To me, an epic game means big ships, otherwise, lets just call it xwing at 300 points per side on 3x6.

Generally i agree that huge ships are a bit too easy to take down IF you focus them with many shots.

However we also have to take into account that if a swarm of lets say 10 TIE fighters flies straight into your corvette its:

a) pretty predictable because they have to do it early (otherwise the sense in focussing it gets lost)

b) relatively easy to interrupt if you bring some assault or ion pusle missiles

c) TIEs do most dmg in range 1 but that also gets them in a lot of danger; try to get away unrammed with such a big swarm if you dont happen to destroy both sections at once

d) the ion explotion upgrade (dont remember the name) could potentially do a LOT of dmg to those TIEs; also 10 TIEs (as an example) are also already 120points

I think we dont really have that big of a sample size of epic games to estimate the real strengh of the CR90 with different equipment, do we? Has anyone played more than a few games with it?

In two of my games a surviving CR90 was pretty much untouchable by the left over fighters of the enemy. So if it should get harder to take out early what are we doing with the opposite situation?

I've played a lot of games with generic Tie Fighters vs the CR-90. It's quite hard to kill the Tantive with just Tie Fighters. It's hard to get into range and not get run over or focus fired down. You can lose a Tie Fighter or two a turn from the Corvette. The only safe way to get a Tie Fighter in R1 of the Corvette is to come at it from behind. With that in mind, you are only doing 1-2 damage per turn. The Reinforce action lets you block 1 damage per attack on one section. It makes it pretty hard for just Tie Fighters to take it down.

It's tough for Tie Bombers to take it down, too. It's hard to get in TL range and not get run over when you approach from the front. Bombers are usually a priority target, so if you come from the sides, you are getting hit by the escort fighters and the guns of the Corvette. The epic ships move after everyone else, so getting that TL is difficult. You usually have to get close and get the TL, but then you are in R1 most of the time.

The worst thing for any Epic ship is a lot of red dice attacks. Anything with 3-4 red dice really hurt it. Depending on what the enemy takes and what you take can really make a big difference. It's actually one area I've found X-wings do really well. They are faster than B-wings and their agility helps when facing Turbo Lasers. Their main weapons can cook up an epic ship fast.

Man....now I'm thinking of trying to set up some sort of Epic 3 way fight between Imps, Rebels, and Scum.

For me, epic is as many points as I want to make it. I don't stick to 300 on a 6x3 table. I just use the space we have available, which is usually 6x4...or more. I make the points whatever sounds good. I try to build both lists by the same person so that it's a bit balanced. I try to use mostly generic pilots. I try to make a scenario that both sides have a chance of winning. To me, epic is just about having fun with a lot of different stuff. I will say that when we are gaming, we do play competitive and we play to win, but we don't have to build the most super effiicent lists to bash each other's brains out. If you do that, then you just go with Interceptors, Phantoms, HLC ships, etc. If you want to build a list to maximize taking out big ships, you can do it.

If you build that way, it would save you a lot of time and effort if you just ignore points. The points don't really work at that scale anyway. The balance between firepower and defence becomes very different when you have sufficient firepower to overcome any practical number of hit points in a single turn. Green dice become much more important in epic than they are in regular, and this messes up the cost of things like the B-Wing. Which also becomes even worse due to its low speed on the larger table.

I still count points. I think points work.

Your corvette shouldn't be scared of Conner net, bombers or TIEs.

It should be scared of Tansarii Pont veterans with Predator and HLCs with Serissu backup.

Took 7 of them with Serissu to a team epic throwdown. One round is all any epic ship lasts.
