HLC and Target Lock

By Supernaught, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Here is a question I heard from a friend. I think I know the answer, but wanted to see the community's take on it:

Someone my friend and I know says that if you fire with the HLC, then use your target lock to reroll, you can keep any crits you rolled as those dice were rerolled.

Is this correct?

My interpretation is that since "changing dice" is different from "rerolling dice" (which says that once rerolled you cannot reroll again), the dice would still change to hits once set.

Nevermind. I cannot read the FAQ properly. Mods, please delete this post. Thank you.

The card changes the initial crits immediately and then it's done. Any modifications after that are allowed, which includes rerolls or tokens.

So, for my own clarification:

Fella with HLC and a TL rolls: 1 hit + 1 crit + 2 blanks.

The crit becomes a hit. = 2 hits + 2 blanks
Uses TL and rerolls the 2 blanks .. rolls 2 crits. = 2 hits + 2 crits

Defender rolls against 2 hits and 2 crits? HLC does not convert the new hits to crits?

If so, I've been playing HLC wrong. Doozy.

That would be correct.

You have 2 hits and 2 crits and your opponent is probably wondering where you found the loaded dice to turn up 3 crits rolling six dice.

That is correct. And don't sweat it; I think everyone played this wrong before being shown the FAQ.

What if you have HLC and Mercenary copilot after you correct any crits to hits due to HLC can you use Mercenary copilot if you fired at range 3 to switch one of those hits to a crit?

Short answer: yes. Long answer: HLC only downgrades its crits once, right after you roll. After that, anything else that generates a crit, including Marksmanship, Calculation, target lock, and Predator (rerolling is not the same as rolling) can stay.
