The Prophetess

By MERLINO_o, in Talisman

Hello,

I seem confused about the character PROPHETESS when i read this article:

-------------------------------------

Prophetess

Let’s first take a look at the most controversial character in the game; the Prophetess.

The Prophetess is a powerful magic user and always has a Spell ready to cast. However, her real power comes from the ability to discard unwanted Adventure Cards. In previous Talisman releases, the Prophetess allowed you to draw an extra Adventure Card and then discard one card of your choice that you do not want to encounter. This let’s you pick the best cards and discard the worst, and proved to be so powerful compared to the other characters that many gamers to simply banned her from play.

The Revised 4th Edition features a small adjustment to this ability but that small adjustment makes all the difference in the world. Now the Prophetess does not automatically draw an extra Adventure Card. Instead, you may choose to discard one Adventure Card that you drew but you must then draw a card to replace it, which you must encounter. This leads to many interesting decisions that the Prophetess player must struggle with during the game.

Let’s pretend that you just drew the Phantom card which grants a wish to the first evil character that visits him. While the Phantom is not helpful to the Prophetess who’s alignment is good, it certainly does not hurt her either. You could choose to discard the Phantom and draw another Adventure Cards as a replacement. Then again, the replacement card might be a fire breathing Dragon which could be devastating if you are low on life. Should you play it safe and keep the useless but harmless Phantom, or take a chance and draw a replacement card which may help or hurt you?

As you can see, the revision to the Prophetess’s special ability adds an exciting push-your-luck twist and still maintains the unique flavor of the character.

With this example does it mean that you can draw an extra card when you land on any slot DRAW ONE CARD (or TWO or THREE) or you can ONLY draw an EXTRA card when you have to DRAW CARDS => AT LEAST TWO CARDS OR MORE

Thx

Well landing on a draw 1 space is pretty self explanitory , as far as a draw 2 or 3 I would think you would draw a card , choose then move on to number 2 or 3. I have used her and am able to cycle through the adventure/dungeon deck fairly quickly (never have ran it out though). Anyway this may not be correct so you could check the actual rules section for this game gran_risa.gif

You do not draw extra cards, you draw only the number of cards indicated.

After drawing, you have the option of selecting one of the cards you drew, discard it, and draw one card to replace it, which you must now encounter.

I like that article. Where did you read it?

I thought it chose a bad example though. Obviously you would toss the Phantom. A random card is better than no card at all. Am I wrong? I mean, name a Talisman player who would sooner do nothing at all than draw an adventure card? Yes, some cards are bad, but we still want to draw cards!

Maybe if you are at exactly one life and doing well enough that you would do better playing weakly and waiting to heal than to start anew (but not doing well enough to best a dragon)? That does happen, but it's very rare to be attached to character that's afraid to draw cards.

A better example would be a card that is good but not great, or good but not really want you wanted to draw. The given example works well if it she drew the Phantom in a double card space along with an enemy she can beat. Now since she's already fighting an enemy, there are cards she'd normally want (enemies she can beat) but wont want now (because they'll double team her). Now she can play it safe with the genuine benefit of a likely trophy; toss Phantom (hoping for a good card and risking a double enemy); or toss the enemy (hoping for a good card and forgoing the trophy to avoid a double enemy).

And although extra strategy is very important for me (I like Talisman a lot but all my other favorite games involve deeper strategy) the more important issue here is balance. So the main point is that in 4th the prophetess will often not end up with the same card than as if she had see them all in advance. She is hence better balanced .

Katana is correct as to your question.

I'll get you that link really soon !!

As for my previous question i've noticed i've asked it wrong.

My real question is when you land on a space that demands to draw ONE CARD, CAN the PROPHETESS discard it and draw another one OR NOT? (which of course she must encounter) or her ability ONLY WORKS when she draw MULTIPLE CARDS? ( meaning two or more). I am beeing very careful with this detail since on the french version of talisman 4th edition it is written that when the prophetess needs to draw CARD"S" and i've also read it on the french TALISMAN forums!! So i just want to be 100% sure and when i read the article (that i posted) i got confused again.

Thank you for your help again

Yes. Even if the Prophetess draws only one card and does not like it, she may discard it and draw again. The number of cards being drawn does not matter - she may always choose one of them to discard and replace it.
