Announce the next EotE book already!

By DanteRotterdam, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Support career (Explorer), combat career (Hired Gun), support career (Colonist), combat career (Smuggler)...

If the pattern holds true, the next career book is the last remaining support career, Technician.

I hope so... I've got my EotEOCD appeased with Fly Casual... really need the Tech book for my fellow player, hopefully there'll be loads mods we can flitter away our hard earned creds on.

Not gonna put any money on a perceived "pattern," but from the beginning I expected the Bounty Hunter book to be last. It's a smart marketing choice, because it's going to be the most popular one. More people will pay for the Bounty Hunter book after purchasing various other splatbooks than they would if the situation was reversed (say, Bounty Hunter coming out before the Colonist book).

Not saying there's not a high amount of niche appreciation for each career, but the popularity of the Bounty Hunter is undeniable, and it would generate considerable revenue and excitement even as the last book of the EotE line.

It also gives them more time to gauge what all should be in that last career book.

Yeah...if it's not the "crown jewel" of the EotE line I think I will actually be a little disappointed :)

Considering the Hollywood pitch for Edge is, "Star Wars where you play a Han Solo or Boba Fett character" then I suspect the Bounty Hunter book will be the second of two crown jewels. And, yeah, I pretty much suspected that Bounty Hunter would be the last career book to be released back when Explorer was announced as the first. Bounty hunting covers one of the most popular ideas in the SW universe, outside of the Jedi (and, naturally, the Force book is the last core book to be released), and it makes sense to drive gamers to other titles in the line in the meantime.

I'm hoping Tech is the next career book simply because while almost all of my RPG characters would have specs from multiple careers Tech would be the most common if I went back and converted every RPG character I have ever made to the FFG SW system.

My top 5 would be

1: Tech

2: Engineer (Usually a Tech engineer hybrid but I have had a few tech characters with no engineer traits)

3: Commander (Almost always Commodore)

4: Smuggler (A lot of my Tech/Engineers are either Independent merchant spacers, or former independent merchant spacers

5: Ace Pilot (Several of my Tech, Tech/Engineer, or Commodore characters are either fighter pilots or were fighter pilots in their pasts and the latter group often occasionally dusts their flight suits off when needed,)

If Bounty Hunter does have a pirate/privateer spec it will be number 6 if not it will be pretty much dead last.

Pilot is def a combat spec. Scoundrel is certainly weighted combat. Although overall perhaps hybrid career would be a better descriptor of Smuggler.

Yeah, I could see Scoundrel as being a "hybrid" career in terms of combat vs. non-combat role. Scoundrel and especially Gunslinger are heavy on the combat roll, and Pilot's pretty focused on vehicular combat, while Charmer, Gambler, and Thief most certainly are not combat roles, though Charmer can certainly support thanks to Inspiring Rhetoric (any characters that rely heavily upon strain to do their thing certainly won't mind having a Charmer in the party).

Driver spec is a bit combat-orientated, but more on the defensive side of vehicular combat by way of avoiding getting hit and being able to quickly recover lost hull trauma/strain as a result of getting hit.

I hope they finish out the career books soon. I have bounty hunter and engineer players in my games, and they're chomping at the bit for new specializations. I'm half inclined to let them respec when the new books come out, and it would be nice if they came sooner rather than later.

Besides, the new mechanics the career books introduce are juicy, and I'd like to be able to incorporate some of that into my game.

That being said, the new adventure sounds compelling. I'm not inclined towards using pre-fab adventures wholesale, and I doubt this one will compel me otherwise, but it sounds like it's filled with bits and baubles that could be retro-engineered to fit the game I'm running. I'd already considered providing the opportunity for my players to make an uneasy alliance with space pirates who are harrying their Hutt nemesis' operation.
