Forum being closed

By GRAAK, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I believe it's not a matter of "if", but a matter of "when" this forum will be closed. IMHO ffg kept it up a very long time after the end of the products.

When Black Industry closed up a lot of interesting forum entries were lost in the void. Since then I moved to independent communities like StS.

It will be a pity to lose all the stuff contained in here. But it will happen.

Some pages are already lost from what I can see about broken we links in old topics.

Is there a way to make a backup of all this stuff??

I emailed ffg to ask about forum when they stated they were stopping publications of WFRP3 and they replied they intended to keep the forum going for the fans to use.

I also doubt this forum will survive. I also think its more "when"...

Strike to Stun is still the best community to move on. It is the Warhammer society that actually keeps the old warhammer (now destroyed by The End Times) alive.

Since the coming of WFRP2, the RPG society has lost few times ALL the stuff of official forums. Well, maybe not all the stuff, because some have lived in various sites still living. It's sad to lose all the links and old topics. There is always stuff there that is not found anymore, because people that might have created them are not anymore active...etc. It would be better if people would have stabile sites, where all the information / fan-stuff could be collected and found. I know that not everyone wants to create sites/blogs just to share their files, but other possibility is to ask those with stabile sites to host them. Either way - Might be good to think about moving any useful fan-stuff to StS for example and move any good topics there...

I am happy to create a WFRP3 directory on http://www.grognard.org.uk/ . Its a very bare bones site I know but dead easy to maintain :-D

Interestingly enough, as of 8/27/2015 Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Core Set is "At the Printers" for a reprint. So, while FFG might not be making new products, they haven't completely abandoned the line, so I doubt the forums will be closing.

Ouch, my feeling.

... Considering the loss of the license it seems this post deserves an Up!

If only the admins would be so gentle to provide us with a backup of these subforums...

I've emailed again to ask this time if the ending of licence relationship will affect existence of this forum and those for other products like Chaos in the Old World.

Rob

We'll see the answer.

Personally, if I were FFG I wouldn't keep an entire forum session for a products I'm not licensed. I can't see much hope for this forum. As I said: it was a mistake sticking in this forum after the experience with BL forums. It was a matter of "when", not "if" this forum would someday close.

Unfortunately the 3rd edition rage on StS probably was responsible of the desertion.

GRAAK buddy, you seem keen for this forum to close, what with the thread title proclaiming a fait accompli a year since :) what cruel blows did this forum deal to make you proclaim it so?

This particular forum? Nothing! :)

The loss of tons of good stuff from BL forum? How hell yes: that was a blow! It would be a pity to lose anything in here too.

And with GW whims it happens every time. The only wfrp forum that survives the extinction events are those created by the fans.

Regarding FFG: there was a licensed rpg called Anima, time ago. Can you find the dedicated forum? I can't, I don't know if I'm looking in the wrong places.

Yes when it somes to WFRP, history shows, if its worth writing down, its worth writing it down at an independent forum with a good track record

If I've understood correctly, the license for Warhammer expires at the end of February. Chances are pretty good the forum will go down then. Does anyone know of a way to take a backup of this forum? There's a LOT of really interesting discussions here.

Or at least a way to conveniently save chosen topics? I mean aside from Copy->Word->Paste

I have partially moved over to Strike-to-Stun allthough I am a bit hesitant because of the extreme push-back that forum gave to WFRP3 when it came out. Still, though it seems like the go-to forum for WFRP and it would be nice to be on a forum that isn't just suddenly closed down because of licensing agreements.

Agree re strike to stun being a great WFRP forum but also a place where edition war sentiments bubble.

I've always found edition wars to be a strange phenomenon regarding any kind of game...

Yeah, I can sometimes feel the hatred for WFRP3 bubble under the surface of some posts. It's pretty tiresome since it's not exactly a huge community anyway and we all love WFRP.

What I've noticed, is some people equate the ruleset with the setting at the time the rules were published. Which I find really weird. WFRP1 is the "weak Empreor" setting, WFRP2 is the "after SoC" setting and WFRP3 is the "Karls Franz on Deathclaw" setting. Perosnally, as long as I'm GM, the setting is whatever I say it is. And I don't think I ever even bothered to read all the fluff in the WFRP3 books. I allready know the setting, I was interested in how the rules could be used for roleplaying in it.

WFRP1, WFRP2 and WFRP3 is just different mechanical tools for playing a roleplay game. And I find WFRP3 to work better than the two others in any setting. But that's a discussion of mechanics. THey seem to be equating the mechanics and the flavour of the Warhammer setting.

Edition wars are almost always tiresome "talking past each other" types of discussions that the Internet is so good at.

They are a particularly sad phenomenon for WFRP as for many of those of us who like WFRP it's the setting not just the rules that attracts (one reason GW's decision to blow up the world rankles). Raining down criticism on whoever the current holder of the licence is just risks less stuff published for the setting you love. As a 2nd edition player you can still use information on Ubersreik and convert adventures, just as I use that great City of the White Wolf Middenheim supplement and vast swathes of Thousand Thrones.

Ironically given the thematic overlap in some ways, my other love, Cthulhu Gaming which also puts a setting/vibe forefront does not seem to suffer from this nearly as much - whether it's editions of the mainstream version or the Trail/Gumshoe version etc. discussions are much more restrained, much more about "how to reflect X in this or that system" etc. less about "you're not having fun the right way" critiques.

Something to keep in mind with whatever Cubicle 7 does with licence. Even those of us who love WFRP3 should not start every discussion of it with "oh for the days of chaos stars and critical wound decks" - unless they have made a special deal of some sort those days are as gone as the star-spanning gates of the Old Ones.

Trust me - possible WFRP3 edition-flame-war-things were NOTHING compared to time, when SoC and WFRP2 came (they came pretty much same time) :) SoC really was "shock-to-the-system".

Yes, it is true there are time to time various flame-wars, especially edition based. And - it is true, that some people don't usually separate the game mechanics and the setting in these matters. Others just dislike both equally. Off course people can dislike or like either way and with any edition. But, if you do not like the game mechanics, the new edition can still provide wealthy setting info... and so on. And if you do not like the setting, others may still enjoy it. In ones own games it can be changed to ones needs and likes...

Yet, even after all these flame-wars, I still encourage people to join that forum. It's good to have all the fans under same roof. It is good to have new people there too.

I agree that the best forum to move to is probably Strike-to-stun.

But it's still sad that some games (and movies, comics, etc. for that matter) suffer from fans that have such hate against different versions. But I guess it's partially due to the players beeing passionate about their games.
I find it wierd though, as I cherry pick the parts I like best from each setting. As Ralzar put it, the different rules presented in different editions are just the mechanical tools for playing.

Let's just hope whatever happends with the license at Cubicle 7 doesn't spark another edition war. :P

FFG have archived other forums before, so all this is hopefully still going to be available for search. But as far as future discussion I'll join the rest in saying Strike to Stun is a good alternative... at least until we get a WFRP 4.0!

I think the opinion of the Strike to Stun forums is pretty blatantly stated by their WFRP 3E Forum having a dig right in the forum title: "Never forget, the threads (no not the dice) tell the story." You're not going to have a great discussion in a forum that is already starting a passive aggressive argument right from the get-go.

Very true, but it's the community members that set the standard. If someone brings up irrelevant edition wars then at least on S2S you can politely point them towards the forum for their preferred system. Of course if no one contributes meaningfully to 3e discussion then you do have a problem, but from the threads I have read over time there are helpful knowledgeable forum contributors.

I would strongly recommend to begin moving threaded discussions wholesale over to Strike to Stun before end of month.

I plan to reach out to Server Goddess to help revamp the entire forum to accommodate ex-patriots from the Fantasy Flight forums (and to improve the overall experience there as well).
