Hello all, I have been wanting to buy some ships to start off for the Star Wars x wing game, but have been afraid of buying the wrong ships. I myself have not actually played the game yet but I have played Star Trek attack wing as it is slightly similar. So I was gonna buy the core set with the millennium falcon and e-wing or if I don't but the core set, I could get the rebel ace expansion with an e-wing and the millennium falcon as I have a small budget right now. Otherwise I am open to opinions and suggestions, thanks!
New to the game and need assistance.
If you plan to play both rebel and empire, then most recommend you get 2 core sets.
For rebel, after that I would recommend a bwing or 2, or a bwing and a ywing. Most 100 point lists are 3 to 4 rebel ships. Falcon is a very popular choice as well.
If you fly empire, once you have 2 cores you have 4 ties. Pick up an interceptor expansion, or you could buy imperial aces, but some of the best pilots are in the interceptor expansion. Decimator is popular. Firespray is a solid all around ship as well.
Hope this helps
You'll need to get a Core set unless you plan on playing with a friend who already has it and they don't mind sharing the damage card, dice, templates and tokens. You can get it online for around $26 usd from miniaturemarket.com and coolstuffinc.com, these are the best prices I've found (about 33% off the msrp).
Since you're already familiar with this kind of game from Attack Wing you might want to check out Yet Another X-Wing Squadron Builder (http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/#empireContent) so you can see the stats, point costs and upgrade options for the ships you're interested in.
You'll want at least one core it has rebel pilots you can't get in the expansion packs as well as templates and the important damage deck.
I'm guessing you like rebels so a falcons not a bad choice, b-wings are another solid choice the best pilot for them comes in the rebel aces set which also gives you an a-wing.
Play a few games and see what you like before you go out and buy multiples.
Core, rebel aces, E-wing. You have all kinds of options with that.

Couldn't agree with this more.
Core set is a must. After that I would recommend ignoring posts here about the meta and best builds and buy what you like. I love the Original Trilogy (OT) so I have only purchased OT ships. I have no interest in the Expanded Universe (EU). Maybe I am crippling myself competitively .. but I have no interest in playing in a tournament setting. Watching iconic OT ships blast the heck out of each other is what I (and my small gaming group) love about the game so we stick to it.
Therefore, I strongly recommend investing in the ships YOU like. It'll keep the game more enjoyable for you.
Getting the Core Set and Falcon is a pretty good start for the Rebels. I guess one bit of caution is that the E-Wing may actually cost too many points to make good squadron unless you were just going to fly the Falcon and E-Wing. You can often get two rebel fighters, and occasionally three when using Z-95s, in with a Falcon but the E-Wing is definitely on the high side cost.
RebelACES is a nice set although even with it you'll want the A and B-Wing expansions. Perhaps you'll play with a group that is VERY liberal when it comes to Proxies but while RACES can the best B-Wing pilot it really lacks the other upgrades you'd put on a B-Wing if you fly it with any upgrades.
When it comes to "buying the wrong ships" I'll say there are just a few to stay away from until you are a bit more familiar with the game. The TIE Advanced and Bomber maybe aren't the best and the Shuttle and HWK can be unwieldy. I guess I can't comment much on the Scum ships yet.
The E-wing does come with a couple great upgrades that the B-wings and X-wing will love to have.
One of the great things about the game is that there isn't a wrong-ship to buy. Everything is viable.
Or at least will be viable once the Raider's released.
Definitely get a core set, get two eventually, the extra ties, templates and dice can not be had at a better price. After that, buy what fuels your imagination. All the ships are worth having.
Having said that, get a Y wing. Y wings are awesome beyond reason. There is soooo much candy in that one blister pack.

That all being said a core set is necessary and should be your first purchase.
Edited by LordFajubiI'm really not a huge fan of the old "you must buy two core sets right from the start!" mentality. In the early days when there were fewer ship options and TIE swarms were really, really popular it was a great idea. These days... eh, I don't think it is, unless you're really deadset on running 7-8 TIE Fighters in a squad. The one thing you can still get out of it is extra dice, but you'd be just as well suited to buying one of the lone sets of extra dice. (though you'll probably need em', as three of each die isn't enough).
My recommendation is to start off by picking one specific faction to build around. When I started playing the game, I was pretty strictly a Rebel player and it wasn't for a couple months that I started to get an itch to try some squads I'd been designing on the Imperial side of things.
Honestly, go with what looks the most tempting/looks like it'll be the most fun to fly (often, flying the ships you like is the most fun. I'm personally 100% giddy every time I fly TIE Bombers, even if they're often considered one of the least competitive ships around). I still haven't gotten around to extensively using stuff like Phantoms, and I've never even bought a Defender, because they just don't interest me all that much. Give me some Headhunters or a Y-Wing, however, and I'll be ecstatic watching them lumber about at my command (and seriously, the Headhunter's dial gets way too much flak: it's not amazing, but it's far from being a HWK or Lambda).
If the E-Wing and Falcon interest you, go with em'. With that said, I'd also look to get Rebel Aces quickish as it'll add a lot of versatility and flexibility to your potential squads. A single Falcon, E-Wing, and X-Wing doesn't give you a lot of options. Throwing in Rebel Aces will really start to open the door up for some creative squad building.
The only thing you need to get is the Core Set. After that, get whatever ship you want.
Two core sets are still popular suggests because even while 7 or 8 TIE Swarms may not be all the rage there are still enough times you'd think about flying 4-5 which makes that second Core a decent way to get them after you get the Expansion for the pilots. Once upon a time having the extra X-Wing was also nice although that is now often eclipsed by the B-Wing or multiple Z-95s.
If you've got limited funds, get 1 core and then whatever else looks fun. Pick your favorite ships and enjoy! Don't get 2 cores right off the bat, because even though it's a great idea to have them and it's a fantastic value, it's also a little boring.
Regardless, it doesn't really matter all that much what you pick, because once you start playing you'll find that you'll happily pack a PBJ and a banana for lunch each day in order to save funds for more ships. ![]()
To get a core set or not really depends on a: what faction you want to focus on and b: do you have a mate that plays the game and has multiple cores sets him self.
If you do have someone you know that has multiple cores then he might just give you a rule book, maneuver template set and damage deck.
That just leaves you looking for dice (no one will want to give these away but you can always shear )
If you plan to play all factions then the core is the best start. Or if you want to buy dice the core is better value than buying them severally
If your just going to focus on the rebels for now the falcon is a.great place to start
For there it depends on what you like, if your trying to hit 100 points as cheaply as possible then yes the E-wing (namely Corran) will help a lot
Z-95,s are a good buy, starting at 12 points they will help filling out a list and B-wing are are some of the best 22 points you can spend

It is best NOT to shear your dice. That makes them unbalanced and playing with modified dice is highly frowned upon.
Now you may be able to share dice with your opponents. If one person takes issue with the other's dice it may even be required. The same could be said about templates, especially those fancy plastic ones, where you can demand that both players use a single set for a game.

Lol smart ass :-P
I advocate buying 2 Core Sets for two reasons:
1) For about $50 US you get 6 ships. That is a good starting point for any faction aside from Scum. TIEs are absolutely still viable and are the best filler ship in my opinion. X-Wings, while not optimal, are not utter garbage either. They are solid.
2) You get double the dice, movement templates, range rulers, and other bits so if you lose one it is not a big deal. Also, if you play someone who does not have anything each of you has a set to play with. Makes life SO much easier.
I think a Core Set is a must because it has the rules in it. I know you can get them online and everything, but a real set of rules is a nice thing to have.
As others have said, definitely get that core set. If you're looking at an e wing and a falcon that'll definitely get you right into the game as you should have no problem filling out 100 points from there. As others have said there's really no wrong answer. Most of my purchases are made on availability. it's sometimes hard to find certain ships so if a hobby store I play at doesn't have a model I want and they can't order it I buy one as soon as I can. Really for rebels my only ship to avoid would be the a wing unless you're buying aces
Core Set is a must. The rules plus all your maneuver templates, dice, range ruler etc, are included plus 2 Ties and a X-Wing for cheaper than buying single blisters.
Add ships from there, buy ones you love or want to fly, try not to get worried about the "meta" and you will be hooked.
I've been playing for 6 weeks and I even went to the Adelaide Regional after only playing for a month because its that addictive. I want another tourney already lol, even if I only came 18th out of 32 (2-3, 503? MoV)
Edited by Diggs SparklighterWell it is really hard to get the wrong ships. However if you are looking for a specific upgrade I would had recommend the X-wing companion app which unfortunately Disney had a C&D order on it and took it down. ![]()
If you are not sure of ships the 2 core sets will get you what you want. But the nice thing about the expansions is that all of the upgrade can be used on the ship so really you buy the expansion packs for the ships not the upgrades. Most of the ships are good although with the entire min maxing and jousting value calculations some people can claim that they can find the superior build. But I know of people who can win with a TIE advance (no raider proxies) against a list with Rear Admiral Chirenue.
I can understand the worries. I play netrunner and it has a lot of expansion packs that it is hard to tell what cards have what expansion. So packs that are good for both ships and upgrades.
- Millennium Falcon
- Tie Fighter
- Lambda Shuttle
- B-wing
- TIE Phantom
- VT-49 Decimator
- Rebel Aces
- TIE Interceptor
- Imperial Aces
- E-wing
- Z-95
- Agressor
- Star Viper
- Y-wing
- Slave 1
- YT-2400
Any of these expansion packs would be pretty good. Depending on what you want to build. I would start with 2 core sets and a Rebel and an Imperial expansion packs. Then once you figure out what type of list you want to play expand your collection accordingly.
