New to this kind of community! Help!

By smashnthrash, in Rogue Trader

Hey guys. I've been a huge fan of the whole Warhammer 40k universe for so long. I've read so many of the Horus Heresy books and all the Eisenhorn books im aware of and love the universe dearly. I really want to get into the RPG business but no one i know has interest in it. I tried getting the Rogue Trader Corerulebook and studied it hardcore but i have no one to play with. Then i found this sight! What do i do now? How do i join a game session? What do i need to get started? Im trying to navigate this site but im so new to this kind of thing i don't know where to go lol. Anyways I'd apprecciate any helpful advice or an invitation to play :D

Look for a Local Gameshop. GW often has store locators on their website. Most independent (Non GW specific) gamestores that carry 40k merchandise will also carry ffg products. Better still; they have an already enthusiatic group of players so you might have luck finding someone there! There are also multiple meeting websites that may help.

Occasionally, there are also online games where people can meet in a text chat room or play via VoIP (like Skype, for example) regardless of one's location. Such games may be advertised here or in other communities - perhaps someone knows an ongoing campaign who could use a new player?

Either way, welcome to the wonderful world of roleplaying, and good luck for your future games!

The easiest (best?) thing would be if you could find an exisiting roleplaying group, And ask them if you can hang out/join them.

Now ofcourse there might be none in your local area. There might not even be any roleplaying groups in your erea. If not, take heart! the technological marvel of the intrenet will provide. ( Praise the Omnissiah !) There is also a ton of adivce on roleplaying floating around the web. And while a lot of it isn't about 40k RPGs you can still learn a lot of stuf from them.

However these forums sure are a good place to start.

Maybe write down for yourself what you'ld want out of roleplaying in the 40k universe, That way you can narrow down what you are looking for. Answer for yourself stuff like:

  • Would I rather tell the story (GM) or be a character in one (PC)?
  • Do I want to play a game of action, combat and hard as nails supermen? (Deathwatch)
  • Do I want to play a game of adventure, power and exploration? (Rogue trader)
  • Do I want a game of investigations, mysteries, combat and paranoia? (Dark Heresy)
  • Do I want to play a soldier in a co-op created regiment of the imperial guard? (Only War)
  • Do I want to play the bigest baddest bad guy ever? (Black crusade)
  • Would I get upset if other players do something that goes against the 40k setting?

Well thats my my two cents throne gelt for now. If you got more questions, just post 'em here.

My first games of 40K were online games. I joined up on roll20 and kept watching the ads until 40K games came up. I wasn't interested in Dark Heresy but they were the most common. I tried a Deathwatch and it didn't last. I finally started a Rogue Trader game and it went on for several months. Since then I've ran another 2 RT games and played in 1, all on roll20. I highly recommend trying it out.

If you have a local gaming shop or access to a college society, those would be good places to start looking for players. If you're talking about online gaming, you could post a thread asking about it in a forum (say Rogue Trader). You could also try sites like Dark Reign.

A bit of advice I was given when I moved cities was to run a game or two myself. Might be worth a shot for you if you can't find a game you want to join.

Best of luck with getting some roleplaying.
