More Sorastro-Inspired Minis

By ElJeffe313, in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

I can't recommend his tutorials enough. I've been painting minis for a while now (WH40k and WHFantasy) off and on, but still find myself learning something new with those videos. If nothing else, they're inspiring me to continue the hobby.

Thanks!

Well done! :)

Love the Troopers! Very clean and crisp.

Stormtroopers are immaculately done. The helmets are stunning

beautiful

Absolutely stunning work! Those troopers have such a beautifully neat, solid finish. *Takes hat off* :)

sehr gut!

Thank you all for the very kind words! :)

Any suggestions on where I can host pictures so I don't have to load up the thumbnails? I've more to include, but I'm at my thumbnail limit.

http://imgur.com/ :) Stunning work good sir

I'll have my pics for the Trandos, E-Web and Guards up soon.

Super sad to see the sub-forum disappear. Makes keeping track of other painters' progress more difficult.

It's been a long time coming, but here are some updated pics of the work I've done lately. The Trandoshans were especially trying, as the original set I was working on were about 75% complete and then subsequently lost. I had to start over again, but managed to do a job I'm happy with.

**Update**
You have to use the "triple dot" option next to the images and select the "Direct Link" option on Imgur's site. Works great from there.

Thanks!

Those Stormies are great!

Also there's something about a bunch of Stormtroopers standing in front of a microwave that's very funny to me for reasons I cannot articulate. :P

Love those troopers, Your skills amaze me. (As does Sorastro's teaching and patience with all of our questions).

Here's my completed Jyn Odan. I decided to match the beige base color from the unpainted plastic to help the Rebel minis stand out a bit more from the Imperial/Scum minis.

Completed IG-88. Definitely one of the fastest figures to paint so far.

His tutorials are great. Haven't painted anything since my D & D days as a kid, and I'm pleased with my results.

Completed Diala Passil this evening. I had a bit of a scare when spraying on the matte varnish, as it left a bit of white dusting on the mini. After the varnish dried, I used some brush-fulls of water to wipe away what I could, then reapplied some matte varnish by hand and it smoothed things over. The saber may need to be enhanced, as it looks a bit too light blue, but I'll give it a couple weeks and revisit it after the next mini is done.

Overall, the purple skin was a blast to paint and highlight, and I'm really happy with the way it pops.

How are people handling the strange shape of the lightsaber where it "lengthens" into her back from molding simplification? Just painting it all as the handle? Or trying to shadow the extra parts to camouflage it in some way?

I got in there with a craft knife and hollowed it out.

I didn't bother with trying to cut it out as I was too concerned about damaging the blade or handle. I painted it to match the cloak and figured, from tabletop, it wouldn't be discernible. I left the area shaded with the wash and didn't highlight it, instead trying to highlight the areas around it more so it draws the attention away.

The jury's out as to how effective it is, but it works from a table-top perspective just fine.

Excellent work all around!

The Force is strong with this one!

Shadow it away, dark brown. And if you paint the glow on the cloak, avoid those shadows. It's surprisingly effective. No-one will notice any strangeness even if they examine it up close.

Finished up my Boba Fett .

I decided not to paint the Scum icon on his shoulderpad as I wasn't satisfied with the methods I tried to use to do so.

- Free hand didn't offer the detail I wanted to get, and despite using a 000 brush, I wasn't happy with the overall results. Even for tabletop distances, it didn't quite capture the look I wanted.

- I tried to downsize an image to a small enough size so I could cut out the negative space, then use my airbrush to paint in the skull. Despite having the smallest image I could reasonably see, the width of the razor blade wasn't narrow enough to cut precisely enough to make a template.

- I considered lightly etching the pattern into the existing paint/plastic. The idea was to use thinned paint and capillary action to draw the paint into place. Ultimately, I decided the risk involved outweighed the potential benefit, and if I made any mistakes, the model would be marked up pretty badly. I may experiment with spare sprues I have and get a second Fett if I feel confident enough.

- I also tried using my micron pen that I use for small liturgy work on 40k scrolls and the like to detail out an outline that I'd then go back over with a needle, dipped in paint. Sadly, the micron pen's point was too large in diameter, and after a few practice runs, I couldn't fit the detail work in the small rectangle I'd set up.

The point is, I gave it my best shot and still couldn't pull it off! Still, I really enjoyed painting this mini.

There's (at least) one other option, and while the buy-in may be a little steep, it will have consistent utility and value: waterslide transfers, also known as decals. Here in the US, Testors sells decal paper that you can run through an ordinary printer - make sure you get the correct type for your printer. If you have skills in creating your own designs you can do that, or just use "captured" images, size them appropriately, print, spray with fixative, and apply.

I've seen some really amazing decal work done on X-Wing minis, which are considerable smaller and smaller scale; I don't see any reason why you couldn't do the same thing here. If you don't want to waste a whole sheet just for a single mythosaur head for Boba, you can add numbers to your stormtroopers, or any number of printed details to different minis. You could even just add simple numbers to the bases to help keep track of who's who.
