empire and scums repaint

By tankabomma, in X-Wing

Hi all
It is my first time writing on this forum and to be honest i start playing x wing only some months ago, but it substitute other games as my principal hobby so...it also take place in the "paint" process i like in wargaming miniatures.

I tried some colour schemes and the result seems acceptable, i don't strip the models from the original paints but the loss of details seems minimal, so here we go to show something.

the first try was with a M3A, i choose a personal scheme and it's the first experiment painting the canopy (it's a bit raw in the details indeed, but not so bad in the end for me)

then i redid a tie fighter but without going too far from the canon, i will try to personalize empire and rebels model but without exageration, i like the originals

my intention is to make all the ties model with this scheme with minor alteration.

then something more naif, another scum/rebel ship, an hawk 290: ok this is really not a rebel scheme, but kyle katarn palette doesn't taste good for me so i choose something more personal.

next projects wuold be some z-95 from the scum box and probably other ties, but i'm not sure when i can find some time for them...so...who knows!

p.s.: i put the photos behind spoiler 'cause i don't know if the are too heavy for the forum, i hope not or... sorry, my fault! (also for the not very oxford english in this post)

Love the M3A! Reminds me of the paint scheme of the Veritech / Valkyrie Trainer from Robotech:

i need to see the series! im also a fan of battletech but i never see the original japanese cartoon, im glad the M3A remenber you this!

Excellent work! Great job on the canopy jeweling on the M3 and HWK, and I'm a fan of the red canopy on the TIE having done that a little myself. I really like the subtlety of the TIE repaint, I tend not to repaint many Imps because of the military uniformity, but I like what you did here. Well done!

I was going to say that the Scyk looked like a very Rebel paint scheme, but I like the Veritech comparison better! Excellent work on those canopies!

I like your colour scheme on the Hawk!

Loving the scum schemes, especially the stripes and canopies. Also good choice of colours.

I don't think you have to worry too much about your pics being to heavy in this part of the forum, pics of paintjobs can be expected, and sizewize, yours are fine

thanks guys never supect the canopies wuold be so appreciated, and they're really easy (more than i expect sincerely), i siply follow som tutorial smoothing a little the passage

You did a great job on the M3-A. I like the paint design. The canopy is fantastic!

sigh i wish mine came out as detailed as yours. what paints did you use and what was your process?

nothing mystical or very professional really: the colors are a mix of gw's range (a lot of the old line with the black cap, some of the last and someone from the first with no black cap) and vallejo line, now in my zone are more easier to find than the other and im probably going to replace the old colors with them when they dry o finish.

for the technic, i'm sorry, but that's more difficult to explain because...i'm really "chaotic" in the decision process, but i can try to take a summary of the passage.

so first some researches on the internet or books for looking at some other paint schemes or inspiration, it's always a good think to do, it could help find some technique or idea i had'nt thinked about and then a little brainstorming on the final goal i want to reach (ok this the theory than as i'm going to write, probably it wuold change 3 or 4 times till the end):for the m3a i decide a white base with some stripes in the rear, possibly red/orange or blue.

so starting about the paint...i tend to use really diluted colors, for not loose detail, it take more time for make an homogeneus layer but it permit to maintain a lot of the little stuff on the model: for the m3a i start to cover all the model with white* (without stripping the original colors, seemed a good choice, they are a good primer for paint on) and after (just for try) with a mix of white and beige** (just a spot) 'cause i found the white a bit cold.

than for the stripes i cut some pieces of scotch paper and made the lines, i paint in the space beetween the scotch with black and than orange**, to make the second darker and highline it from the basic white (this didn't work, i try cause on 15 historical models i use this technique and help me to increase some contrast but not here): i made the same for the cockpit and the frontal lines, i decide to make them founding the frontal area a bit empty.

Done this, i decide to make some difference on the panels like the were of difference materials or with less/more wearing on them just to be more "realistic": for the beige i used the corresponding color diluting it and for the gray a mix of black and white in different proportion.

Naturally during all this process i spent more time correcting and repaint over my errors than make other things.

and for now i have to stop, but i suppose apart for the canopy there isn't much left to write, remenber only to diluting! diluting everywhere! (oh yes! and use brushes of small size, i prefer 0, 00 and 000 for the tiny detailsand some medium for the rest of the work)

*vallejo game color: dead white 72001

** beige - gw foundation: dheneb stone / orange - gw color: fiery orange
