Ideas for a little adventure on Dantooine

By Kaidan Sunstrider, in Game Masters

Hey guys,

I got a little problem.

I'm part of a Star Wars group with a pretty talented GM, who has four different groups running around in his universe (around 0 ABY) and he keeps saying that I should try GMing myself.

So I talked to my sister, who's also a part of our group, and said that we could try a little solo adventure for one of her backstory characters back on Dantooine and she really liked the idea, so now I don't want to disappoint her.

So my sister's character Reilin Sandral (yes, the family from KotOR ;) ) grew up on a farm operated by farming droids and her father hired a Mirialan Droid Mechanic named Mijuun, who will be the hero of our little solo adventure.

But I've no idea what she could do.

The farm was sold and all of the people who lived there are either gone or dead, so Mijuun is left unemployed.

So I figured maybe she will try and earn some money to follow her friend (my sisters Maincharacter) on her way to the Rebellion.

But what can an aspiring Droid Mechanic do on Dantooine?

Scavenge through ruins? The Jedi Enclave is in ruins for almost 4000 years, so that'll be picked clean.

The Rebel Base is needed for future Legends stuff, I believe, so I'd rather not touch that.

Maybe an old hidden Seperatist Base? Filled with some battledroids and a few obscure notes on Kybercrystals they were trying to study?

Should I give her some NPCs to aid her? Fill some gaps she didn't cover with her skills?

Maybe a little droid like Bao-Durs Remote from KotOR II?

So, long story short, novice GM needs advice for a solo adventure and plot ideas for a mechanic PC.

I like the idea of the Separatist base. Perhaps there's something valuable in it, such as salvageable battle droids or some secret weapon, that agents of the Rebellion, Empire or maybe the Hutts are seeking. The hero could find herself caught up in the middle of the hunt for it.

Rather than the ruins of the Jedi Enclave, what about the ruins of Khoonda (the outpost in Kotor 2). There was a suggestion on these boards about 9 months ago that could work here.

The outpost has been abandoned and in ruins for 4 millennia, but in that time, one solitary custodial droid has gone all of that time without regular memory wipes, and as a result has taken its original programming to an extreme. For a ruined outpost the place is fairly clean and tidy, but something else. The remains and corpses that should have be dust now have been preserved. They're still skeletons, but they're held together in poses using wire and bits of scrap laying around. They've been posed in natural positions, such as sitting around playing Djarik, or gathered around a table with dusty glasses in their hands.

The droid's faulty program has it maintaining the dead bodies and making them look natural. Now the droid thinks an organic's natural state is a dead skeleton. So when the PC arrives, she'll find the bodies and eventually run into the droid who wants to kill her to "maintain the ordered" state of things.

You don't even have to pull from Star Wars sources. Find an old family journal describing a ruin that was never fully explored... from a teenager's perspective. Make it seem mysterious and have a couple of hidden dangers... not necessarily traps, it could just be that the age is affecting the structure and making places unstable. Give opportunities to use skills (ie, don't depend on fighting for learning something). Add a mix of Lara Croft or Indiana Jones. Help her find a long forgotten secret. A mysterious artifact. Anything that she finds will seem remarkable, because you will describe it as such (and her character would not know what it was). She will then need to find someone that can help her identify what it is. Who can she trust? Or does she just start asking people? Never know till you reveal the item. Use vague clues to send her to a couple of potential locations... (reason being, if you only give one option there is a good chance they can do something else. If you give them a choice, they will usually make a choice). You can use the same mystic at either place or let it be a scavenger hunt. Even if you don't know what the mysterious item is for a long time, you can still set events in motion.

As for the droid, let her come up with why this droid is her companion. Don't try to do all of the creative work yourself. If she helps create that part of the world, she is more invested in it. Possibly even help collaborate on this, so that it feels like something you both created together. Use the ruins to build teamwork between them (make it so it cannot be accomplished by a single being). Portray the droid as extremely literal to make her describe things better using conversation. Use different voices for your NPCs (and keep them straight). Dialogue is more important than description. Most of all, just have fun. If you have fun and can tell she is having fun, it is successful!

Well, I think I'll use some old base that she can explore.

Khoonda though? Don't you think that's been picked clean in all those millenia?

Could there be something valuable left?

I'll definitely use the droid gone mental idea and the unstable structure idea.

And of course I'll let my sister describe what kind of droid she likes to have as a companion and why.

I guess I'll involve a Rebel agent who's short on manpower and who's heard of some Seperatists/Crime Syndicates/or old Mandalorian Base with some valuable .. stuff and who just happens to tell her about it over a game of sabbacc or a drink.

Maybe he'll join her .. I don't know.

What do you think about that?

And thanks for your suggestions so far.
