Build/Figure types for characters/NPCs?

By QuinnDx, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So on character sheets, it has room for little visual details like hair/eyes/height etc, but something I struggle with a lot is coming up with various unique builds/body types for my characters/NPCs when I'm writing a campaign. I want some diversification amongst them, but I only ever seem to come up with basic 'dating website' terms like thin or athletic.

What have you guys seen from your players that might help me out? Stocky? Solid? 'More to love'?

I know in my past rping experience I used "athletic" a lot, but then after awhile I realized that was super generic, as athletes can be of almost any build so I did some research and found a few terms that I like to use, they are somewhat scientific, so I'll asd in some adjectives to describe them.

1. Ectomorphic, tall, lanky, your average "swimmer's build". Musculature is usually lean and toned but without much definition. Races this is good for: Duros, any other tall but frail-looking race

2. Mesomorph, your average "athletic" build, not overly tall, and not overly stocky, a good majority of basketball players for this mold, think Lebron James, or in a more canon feel this is Han's body type. Races: human, bothan, pretty much any humanoid

3. Endomorphic, a stocky, barrel chested build, very muscular, but withou any tone or definition, these are your guys that take part in strong-men competitions, a notable celeb example of this type would be Jason statham. Using words like wide, solid, built like a wroshyr tree. Races: again this is a pretty broad description, but these body types generally tend to be a little shorter and wider in the shoulders.

All these descriptions assume the person is in decent physical condition. For more descriptors on non-physically fit npc's you can go with anything from chunky to corpulent

I saw these on Google with graphs and stuff. I figured though unless you're into fitness, they aren't overly comprehensible. But after how you described it, I stand corrected.

Races really do play a lot into it. I mean, have we ever seen an athletic Jawa?

[...] have we ever seen an athletic Jawa?

How would you even tell? ;)

It might be enough to make sure you have some diversity in the party. If you look at a lot of teams (like Guardians of the Galaxy, for example), you see a lot of variety in size and shape.

Or look at a Pixar movie like "Inside Out". The main characters Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear and Anger each have really different shapes.

So maybe you have a tall one, a short one, a wide one, a square one, a round one ...

If you have a tall character you could emphasize that they often feel like they're going to bump their head in a spaceship, or describe NPCs craning their necks to look up and speak to them. (As a tall guy I could relate).

For the short one you could describe them needing to crane up to see the people they're speaking to. For the wide one you might mention that they have to squeeze between angry patrons in a cantina or turn sideways to slide into the cockpit of the ship. And so on...

I'll throw details plus a benchmark in like "Muscled but wirey like Bruce Lee" or "Ripped like Schwarzenegger at his prime" or "skinny and gaunt like Shaggy"

I've found the Table 4-1: Appearances chart on page 110 of the RCR Galactic Campaign Guide to be pretty helpful in that regard. It's got a decent number of suggestions for build type, ranging from "athletic" to "massive" to "statuesque" to "withered" to "corpulant."

The Dark Heresy 2e free online supplements allow for random generations of build, colourization (it's a British-based IP, so forgive the spelling), and distinguishing features for human characters. Download it and give it a try.
