Thematic Decks for the Saga campaign

By Troymk1, in Strategy and deck-building

Has anyone successfully completed A Shadow of the Past with just hobbit decks?

I've tried so hard to build two secrecy decks and to use all the available cards to sneak past the Black Riders but it's simply too difficult. I HAVE been successful doing it on easy mode but I feel that's cheating to a degree and it sticks in my craw.

Are we suffering from what I will call the glaurung effect? That thematic decks using only canon items will not be able to progress?

I hope not, Or I guess, I'm doing the campaign on easy mode, which I notice already would need some errata.

I guess it depends on how strict you want to be. I would consider Aragorn, Sword that Was Broken, Glorfindel, and Asfaloth to be on-theme for some of those quests. With those power cards it should be beatable. But I've never tried completing it with just Hobbits.

I have not done it, but I have seen friends beat the Saga quests with 3 color hobbits. The key seems to be merry's crazy attack power. However, the real trouble with hobbits decks is journey in the dark. A lot of secrecy type strategies will work right up until that quest, then you get rocked and may find it nearly impossible with hobbits. My advice is to find a deck that can beat that quest first.

I agree completely. For the next quests I will include such cards to stay as canon as possible. Building those decks now.

I've done it solo with Hobbit decks that are very thematic. I adapted a deck from Boris a while back. Solo mind.

Aragorn can help a lot, and I think the deck stays thematic with him.
