Card only expansions... (Stay with me for a sec)

By gamblertuba, in X-Wing

For the course of this thread, assume card only expansions are coming.

1. Would you consider buying them?

2. What would you consider a fair price?

3. What would be the first thing on your wish list?

4. How do I use the search function in the forum to find one o the 50 previous threads about this?

Categorically ruled out by Alex Davy. Not happening ever, straight from the designer's mouth.

Knowing that, do you still want to discuss it, knowing that it's entirely fantasy?

Because that never happens on a forum based on a game about a sci-fi fantasy...

1) Yes, yes and more yes

2) Probably 50-75% of the cost, the R&D cost involved in creating new pilots and testing them should not be underestimated. not to mention punch card for pilot tiles etc. as well.

3) any ship currently with only 2 unique pilots.

Of course this is just fantasy land as others have said, straight from the developers mouths that they dont intend on doing "shipless" packs, even though this would be a great way of expanding the game without the hassle of hand painted ships slowing the process down.

Most of the previous posts were debating the viability of card packs. I want to see what we would put in one if we could design a card only pack.

X-wing title is the most obvious. How else to deliver one?

It's better that they include copies of older cards in new ships. Like Engine Upgrade in Hound's Tooth etc

This is a hypothetical, all new pilots and upgrades expansion. I think this'd be nice for something like the X-wing or Tie Fighter, since so many people have a ton of them.

If these happen, remember you heard it here first. I expect that at some point soon it will be the only feasible way to continue.

1. Beef jerky

2. $863

3. Elusiveness

1. Maybe

2. Depends on how many cards come in the pack

3. Gum. I want some of the old-style rancid gum from card packs.

I know FFG doesn't offer card packs, but the secondary market certainly does. I have purchased almost 30 cards from ebay sellers to get the cards I want without having to deal with the ships I have no interest in. Cards have ranged in price from $1 to $9.

So I would consider buying packs from FFG if they had a decent distribution of the cards I wanted without a bunch of filler that I don't want. For example, at this point with all the cards I already have, I wouldn't buy an EPT pack for $15 if it came with multiples of Marksmanship, Daredevil, Expose, Determination etc just to get one copy of Veteran Instincts or Predator.

I was thinking of new cards not old ones. The big advantage would be new pilots for old ships. New mods to tweak a ship without needing to buy a mini that you don't need.

Would be interesting to see a model like Star Realms. Foil wrapped packs with known contents for about $5.

Unfortunately, this won't happen. FFG is too greedy, and would rather force people to buy $80+ expansions to get some must have cards.

I disagree that any card is must-have unless you slavishly adhere to copying your squads off the internet.

We heard it several years ago, repeatedly.

I also contest that it'll be the only feasible way to continue. They can release acepack repaints almost infinitely, or simply retire X-Wing and start a new fighter combat game.

By comparison, a £10 Netrunner expansion (and those are the little ones they release monthly) contains 60 cards. 20 unique ones. Multiply that by 6 months (the distance between Waves) and that's 120 cards. A year, 240. They'd double seven waves worth of content in two. I'm not sure they could do that, and even if they could it's just not profitable compared to their current ships with cards model.

And if they designed card packs with the same number of cards, then you're paying a similar price for four to six pilot cards and a few little upgrade cards. Would people, relative to current sales, buy that?

Grow up. FFG hasn't forced anybody to do anything, except decide for themselves whether it's worth it to buy each expansion.

1. Selling card only expansions is a bad business idea and would be a detriment to FFG.

First off, are these only upgrade cards, or pilot cards as well?

1. Absolutely.

2. No more than $1 per card.

3. I mean, it sure would be nice to get some Autothrusters without having to buy ships that aren't even for my faction.

You mean Totally Right Guy?

I buy quite a few single cards, dials and tiles from various sellers on the the bay of e, and how much they're wanting pretty much dictates whether or not I'll buy them, or shell out for the expansion.

Last night I was looking for a few things, I've got 4 Scum Z-95's and wanted the bits and bobs to play them as Rebels. After adding everything in my basket up I looked at the cost; it was still cheaper, but not by enough when compared to 4 Rebel Z-95's on various online stores to justify buying bits.

And to me, buying cards in separate packs would be the same, unless those packs were priced low enough it wouldn't interest me in the slightest. If you're ever in the area, go to Common Ground Games in Stirling, Scotland, and have a look at the boxes of junk magic singles that are just lying in the corner waiting for a good home.

10, 12 or 14 meh cards for the one that you really wanted? Nah.

Cheers

No, I mean Doesn't Understand The Difference Between "Offers For Sale" and "Forces Customers To Buy" Guy. Or possibly Doesn't Understand There Are No Must-Have Cards Guy. Or even Low Post Count And Has Nothing But Ngative Things To Say Guy.

They sell card only expansions...on ebay.
