Vader Crew with 1 hull remaining on ship

By piznit, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Can you activate Vader and take the 2 damage to deal the 1 damage if your ship only has 1 hull remaining?

Yes, as long as you have at least 1 hull left, you can activate Vader.

Oddly enough, I believe you can still use Vader even if the ship he's on is already doomed. For example:

Vader on a ship w/ gunner but lost initiative is destroyed on it's PS but is still around due to simultaneous fire rule. Ship attacks, triggering Vader, and missed, triggering Gunner, can then attack again which in turn triggers Vader a second time. All said you've taken a ship that is supposed to destroyed and put 4 more damage on it and dealt 2 critical damage while it's going down.

That would be incorrect. If you check the FAQ for Vader's card:

"Darth Vader

A ship equipped with Darth Vader can use this ability if it has at least 1 hull remaining.
If a ship equipped with Darth Vader can attack twice in one round (such as a ship equipped with Gunner or Cluster Missiles), it can use Darth Vader after the first attack. If Darth Vader destroys the ship to which he is equipped, it can still perform its second attack."
So yes, you can attack twice, but can't use Vader if there is no hull left.

The simultaneous fire rules would be a rare corner case. In any event the ship still does have hull remaining during simultaneous fire; it just happens to already have more damage cards on it than it has hull value.

I find it odd that Vader can destroy his own ship and then shoot again because of Gunner but he would be unusable in a Simultaneous Fire situation. For what it's worth I had argued that Vader should NOT be usable again after he's already destroyed the ship he's on.

the FAQ for Vader's card:

[headsmack] That is in the FAQ entry for vader? Ships in this game don't loose hull, they accumulate damage cards.

I don't find it to be that odd actually, the 2 damage is the cost and since you cannot "pay" the cost of the card; seeing as your ship has 0 "life" left, you cannot use it.

You can however use a passive and conditional ability like Gunner, which has no cost.

The Odd thing is that Vader can be used with Gunner to destroy his own ship TWICE! Logically one of the two Vader uses shouldn't happen because the ship should be dead at that time.

How? You can't Vader if you already have damage cards equal to or greater than your hull value.

Correct. As soon as you Vader yourself from the first attack and equal or exceed your hull value with damage cards, you must immediately remove the ship, so you're definitely not around for Gunner to kick in.

Exceprt the FAQ says you can. P12.

That does not mean that Vader gets to trigger on that second attack, though.

The good old 'nested loop' thing seems to happen.

Vader Triggers and Gunner trigger.

Gunner goes and makes a second attack Triggering Vader again.

Resolve second Vader

Resolve first Vader.

I know we've gone over this topic before.

I know we've gone over this topic before.

Indeed we have. Don't realy remeber what we landed on last time.

The FAQ makes it clear you can perform the second attack from gunner even if "dead" from Vader after first attack. How ever it doesn't explicitly say anythng about Vader from the second attack if destroyed. I guess the part about "A ship equipped with Darth Vader can use this ability if it has at least 1 hull remaining." could be read as a no on that. Even if the wording is a bit curious considering ships never lose hull in this game...

The whole thing is just a mess. Vader's card doesn't say anything that limits its use beside making an attack. The FAQ may seem clear to some until you just remember that ship do NOT lose hull in this game; they just get destroyed when they have damage cards equal to or greater than the number of hull points the ship has.

Maybe it's time to clarify thing better in the FAQ when it comes to these relationships.
