Regional Top 4 with Triple A

By Narcoleptic, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Carnor is the odd duck (he wants to be in R1, but dies too often because of it).

But how much joy it brings to say "No.. you dont get that token" :D

Turr is nice to have around even if he has nothing to shoot at, kinda like Biggs.

Hi, long time lurker here. Congrats on the Top 4, Narcoleptic. A few questions from a struggling A-wing fan :)

Great report. Do you miss auto thrusters with this list? I find the choice of stealth device over At to be curious.

I tried thrusters at a tournament once and the results were very conclusive. Against turrets it was like not getting shot at all. Against regular arcs however they wouldn't have been worth it even if they were -2p. SDs work against all enemies, at all times(until I get hit ofc), and since I don't always have the luxury of being out of arc every time I shoot a procket I need every defensive boost I can get for those moments. I find that they work better, as long as you stay away from R1 and make sure to have Focus-Evade you're fairly sure to keep the devices.

The meta is very Decimator/turret heavy in my area (I played 3 of 5 rounds vs. Decimators last Regionals) so I feel a bit naked without autothrusters. Also, how do you tackle the round you fire a PRocket? I'm having problems with the fact that if I TL+focus that round the return fire (especially from Chiranau) can be devastating, often leading to a sad, dead A-Wing.

Taking a TL earlier and slowrolling to the Decimator would be ideal but that means a few rounds of fire before you get to engage with PRockets (that is if you manage to catch the Decimator after the first pass). And while Autothrusters help, the Decimators always have gunner which makes turtling problematic (I usually settle for getting one dmg to pass to avoid some kind of a disaster on the second roll).

I tried playing a triple A list (first with Arvel, then Gemmer), then an AAB list with Jake and Tycho + a Blue and though the PRockets should make it a good matchup, I struggle with it. The return fire from a Decimator on range 1 is just devastating and after firing off PRockets all I can do to Soontir is run away :) Although I have to admit, I just recently started thinking about using other rockets than Protons on at least one A (as you've done with the Green in Uppsala ).

And like I said the turret-heavy meta made me go with Autothrusters, which meant no Psycho Tycho with DD and EI. I see you didn't face any turret lists in the Regio (aside from Dash, but Dash is a good matchup for ace A-wings I think). Would you still recommend your build or something like it in a meta chock full of turrets, especially Chirpy-Fels? (we can safely assume about 1/2 of my matches will contain a Decimator, probably but not always a Deci/Fel combination).?

Sorry for the long post but I would appreciate some input, as I would love to make A-wings work for me :) Cheers!

When I face turrets I try to stay away and get my TL early on. The optimal situation I look for is getting into Range 3 on a flank or the rear, preferably before their movement so they end up out of range after their maneuver. I try to find a safe spot to grab TL+Focus in advance so I can have Focus-Evade on the round I step in. Against Dash it didn't really matter if I was at Range 2 or 3 since he was using a cannon. Up until the moment I attack with the PRs I just shoot with my primary as much as possible, that can really whittle down a turret. In my game against Dash I removed all his shields with just my blasters. As for Decimators you need to hit them a few times before or after delivering the payload either way. The way I fly my list results in there never being a "first pass" or something. I get my ships in position, someone going around the asteroid field, someone cutting through it and such, and then I decide when to begin the engagement, and from there on there's no real end to it. Psycho Tycho and PtL-VI Jake are great at keeping the pressure and staying on the target.

Now, if I were to make a list for a meta with at least 50% turrets then I'd go something like this.

Tycho

- PtL

- Test Pilot

- VI

- PR

- Autothrusters

Jake

- PtL

- Test Pilot

- VI

- PR

- Autothrusters

Arvel

- Test Pilot

- PtL

- PR

- Autothrusters

You've got your autothrusters, you've got PS9 and 10 to deal with Han, Soontir, Whisper, RAC, you've got an initiative bid to increase the chances of moving after Soontir with Jake. Arvel can block and safely fire his PR. An option would be to put an Ion Pulse Missile on Tycho to make it easier for Jake and Arvel to deliver their PRs.

Thanks for the tips :)

I actually tried going with something similar to the list you mention, but that was my first tournament flying A-wings and I didn't have a good grasp on what they can do. Maybe I'll come back to it, test it a bit :) I'm currently running Jake and Tycho like that, I guess I'm doing something right at least ;)

The rest is mostly practise. I've been flying triple A since I started, which was when Wave 2 came and brought me my lovely A-wings.

Wait - you had to practice the list you played? And you had to be skilled to do well? Well then, it clearly has nothing to do with the list you're playing at all, you could have WON the event if you brought a fat han </sarcasm>

Congrats for the big result!

I really want to try triple-A myself and i have a couple of questions:

Wouldn't be better to keep the total cost to 99 pts? I really want my Jake move after Soontir/VI Whisper/Wedge/Han and other ps9 ships.

Why ion Missiles on the green? Did you find them useful?

I've been thinking of concussions for the green and AT on both Jake and Green, or ionson green and AT for one and Sd on the other, keeping to 99pts for the initiative bid. What do you think about that?

What about obstacles selection and placing?

Thanks in advance if you want to answer
