furball idea??

By Wayne Argabright, in X-Wing

We frequently play big furball games at my LGS and i was thinking about ways to prevent everybody from ganging up against a particular person unless that person is rebel scum then of course they deserve it!! lol was just thinking about a rule that says you have to attack the farthest person away from you. That would also prevent folks from running away..lol Anybody try this or other big furball game rules?? We have also done the "You can only attack the person on your right rule" Makes the game really different!! but still fun... another alternative i have come up with is playing two separate games on my 4x4 mat.. with each player playing a traditional game against the opponent across the table from him or her. you cant attack the other ships but they can get in the way and block etc etc...

We do a 35-point free for all fairly often, where we use a points system to change up the victory conditions. Basically, everyone has their own damage deck. For each attack that deals damage, you discard a card from the top of your deck. For each enemy ship you destroy, discard 3 cards, and if you are the last ship standing, discard an additional 5 cards. The player with the most discarded cards in their point stack wins, regardless of who is last ship alive. It forces people to be aggressive early, and to spread some damage around to prevent others from picking off ships they damage but don't destroy. The last time we did this, we had a Vader, Luke, Soontir, Tycho, Etah'n, and Palob, and the Hwk took the game.

... You know, you've suddenly made me realise that you could totally play a game of Assassin using X-wing furballs.

Each player puts their name in a hat, then everyone draws a name. The person they draw is their 'target', and the only way they can earn points is by their target dying. Once you kill that ship, you get that persons target as your next bounty.

Of course, you also have to work out who is after you...

Draw your own name? You become a 'wildcard' - you can still attack whoever you want, but you only win if you last till the end. If you do, though, you automatically win. Keep bluffing like you're playing for points, else everyone else will come gunning for you! ;)

Yes, you can still shoot at anyone you like. But you're probably helping someone else if you do so. Then again, that ship will be gunning for you eventually... it ends up with everyone making sure no-one is left 'too strong', even whilst they refrain from actually killing anyone but their own target, if they can. Hilarity ensues!

I recommend using the win-condition rules from "BANG!". They are thus:

Every player is assigned one role at random, among Sheriff, Outlaw, Deputy, and Renegade.
(The game I'm stealing this from has a wild-west theme. You can go with Magic's "Usurper" which uses Emperor, Assassin, Guard, and Traitor, or anything that follows a similar theme).

The Sheriff reveals who they are, and may opt to change ships at this point.

The Sheriff and Deputies win if the Outlaws and Renegades are killed.
The Outlaws win if the Sheriff dies while there is an Outlaw still alive.
The Renegade wins if the Sheriff dies after there are no more Outlaws or Renegades alive.

For 4 players, you have 1S, 0D, 2O, and 1R

Add 1D for a 5th player
Add 1O for a 6th
Add 1D for a 7th
Add 1R for an 8th

Remember: ONLY the Sheriff is known. No-one else reveals their identity until after they die.

I really like this. So does my wife. And my friends. They love bang and this ties everything together.

Done this in other gaming systems. It's a lot of fun, particularly when somebody plays mind games...
