Watch out for Mauler Mithel

By Rumar, in Star Wars: Armada

He deals out 1 automatic damage to every fighter he moves to engage with. Not a big deal, as he will be engaged afterwards and can't move any more? Not if he is combined with Admiral Chiraneau, who lets every squadron activated by him move at speed 2 regardless of engagement.

Overpowered ? Quite. But Tie squadrons only have 3 hitpoints.

Nice!

Yup, he has been around. He also has a scatter which makes him a pain to kill

Does that mean Mauler can move essentially 0 and re-dish out the damage to the already engaged squadron?

With Chiraneau? Yep, move one out, one back in, dish out damage. Hehehe....

Engage him first. :)

This might be a stupid question, pardon me, but would Mauler also damage your squadrons in the process ? Or is the wording of "engaged squadrons" specfically refer to squadrons that are engaged with him (aka only ennemies). Cheers !

He damages enemy squadrons, as you cannot engage friendly squadrons.

He damages enemy squadrons, as you cannot engage friendly squadrons.

And only after HE moves.

Also, would he need to disengage before re-engaging?

I.e. Move out of distance 1 for a turn.

Need to check the specific wording...

Is it When he engages... I.e the act of moving to distance 1 from beyond distance 1

Or is it while he moves to an engaged position - regardless of if he's engaged at the time.

What is the Trigger for the damage being dealt?

His test is: "After you move, each squadron engaged with you suffers 1 damage." So he doesn't have to disengage and reengage to trigger the damage. Just scoot a tiny bit.

Thanks for checking doctormungmung.

I wonder what the fluff is to justify the affect?

I can't remember what he gets in X-wing - nothing that Devastating IIRC

Ok googled it...

When attacking at range 1 roll an extra attack die.

Heh. Someone just noticed this. :) Yes Mithel and Chiraneau are a nasty combination. Stick something with Escort next to him and he'll just keep doing it over and over.

He's great. Well, unless I'm playing Rebels in which case he's suddenly really annoying. ;)

He technically can move 0" inches and be considered moved. It's in the squadron movement area I believe.

Question....

I have X Rebel Squadrons in an area and Mithel moves in. How many squadrons will take damage from him after he moves?

  1. 1
  2. X

Mithel has completed his move and a Rebel Squadron moves in to engage him. Does that squadron get auto damage?

2. X - "each squadron engaged with you suffers one damage."

No. It is "After you move.", not "Whenever someone engages you."

let's not forget about Soontir.. pari him with a tie advanced or two and he's doing a damage to every squadron that shots his way, but not at him.

A trick I have used against him is to hide in obstacles or behind ships, that way after he moves in you still aren’t engaged and thus don’t take any damage (unless he moves into base to base contact in an obstacle, or jumps right over the screening capitals). Either way it helps limit his damage output.

It works even if bases touch, if you're hiding in a obstacle.

From the RRG:

If line of sight is drawn over an obstacle, the attack is obstructed even if the bases of the attacker and defender are touching.

If you want pure filth go mauler, soontir, 2 tie advanced and have a beautiful death bubble of cheese.

Mauler is great. I think I've used him in every game since I got the squadrons box. I used him with Chiraneau in my last game and it worked like a charm.

That's huge, totally overlooked escort on the Tie Advances. Gonna try that next game.

Ive actually found a mean fighter combo with Howlrunner and Tie Interceptors. if using the squadron command and flight controllers it allows the interceptors within 1 of howl to roll 6 dice against squadrons with a 1 die re-roll from swarm. Can 1 shot any squadron if you roll well enough (my last game I 1 shot a y-wing with this).

Strong arguments for not bringing any squadrons.

My favorite is Rhymer and 10 Tie fighters creating a tightly packed death ball. Ships within range two look out: 10 blue and 1 black coming your way!
