Leadership-Tactics solo deck

By Gizlivadi, in Strategy and deck-building

This is not intended to be a theme deck or a "gimmicky" deck. This is supposed to be just a general purpose aggro leadership tactics solo deck. I've been trying to make one of these for a while now, one that wasn't running Elladan & Elrohir, and that doesn't rely too much on traits or intrincate combos and mechanics, rather just the most powerful cards in these spheres that work well with each other and the heroes. This is simple, to the point, and hopefully it has a good chance against most scenarios. I still need to test this, but I think it will be rather good. Any comments are welcome!

Update: Beat Deadmen's Dike first try, but still can't beat Intruders in Chetwood in my 2 attempts. Outlying Homestead really hurts Boromir, and I actually threated out from the sheer number of Doomed cards in the deck (including that treachery that if whiffs it gains surge AND doomed 1). I still played a copy of Secret Vigil and reduced my threat by 3, but then I got location locked and couldn't reduce my threat so Gandalf was just sitting in my hand (no Sneak Attack), and after that another Homestead appeared and I thought it was over. Next round I reveal Pressing Needs and it was indeed over. Not to mention that I was raising my threat each round because I had a War-party stuck in the staging area thanks to the shadow effect on Surprising Speed. Must say, I don't know if this is common in this quest but, this is a really synergystic encounter deck. I want my Favor of the Valar and other valour cards, I think they would work here.

I have been hitting my head against the wall trying to beat Deadman's Dike. What's the strategy behind this deck that helps you beat it? I am tempted to try it out.

Using a deck like this, the only real strategy for Deadmen's Dike is, prepare to defend lots of attacks (Boromir takes care of that), gather lots of willpower and quest like mad before you deck yourself! The main thing that hurts this deck in that quest (apart from the mill effects), is that this runs multiple copies of the weenies and the effects that discard all allies of which there's a copy in the discard pile. In the only game I played with this deck, I had that effect discard a couple Envoys, Outriders and even the Gandalf I had played with Sneak Attack! But I still had so much willpower thanks to StwB, the heroes and allies like Galadriel and Faramir that I still managed to beat it. Other than that and the mill effects, this quest is pretty much a normal hard quest with lots of threat and strong enemies. Leadership takes care of questing mainly, while Boromir and the tactics allies take care of combat.

Man stage 2 can be so insanely punishing. Played two rounds the other day and lost both. During the second game when advancing from Stage 1 to Stage 2 I had the amount of enemies in play go from 1 to 10. Cursed Dead revealed during staging bringing back 3 other copies from the discard pile, Thaurdir added to staging from advancing to stage 2, TWO, YES TWO Dead Lords being revealed from the effect on stage 2, both of which engaged players bringing another 2 undead enemies back from the discard pile. I had resources on Elrohir enough to block maybe 5 of the enemies tops so needless to say I conceded (already had damage on various heroes) as 5 undefended attacks would have spelt doom for sure.

I feel like you need at least some good luck in this quest as it can be either hard or insanely hard depending on what encounter cards come out.

This is an actual picture of the last round of my second attempt just played against Deadmen's Dike. My threat was 49 so this was my all-out final quest push or death. Thankfully I revealed that Thaurdir's Damned, and I just had to make 4 progress to defeat the final stage,. I didn't even need to exhaust Faramir. Fortune or fate have indeed helped me!

Is the Tactics-Leadership a requirement for the deck? Because otherwise I would think Lore Aragorn is a much better fit for Tactics Boromir.

I think leadership is there for questing power which you need solo. If you went lore/tactics you would lose a considerable amount of questing, which would undermine the deck's solo viability. Plus you lose the resource acceleration. You could use spirit with its threat reduction (for Boromir) but then you lose attack strength that you need for quests like Deadman's dike. Sneak attack/gandalf and secret vigil should be enough.

I would not go without Leadership, there is the third hero for. I had a very good success with Théodred, Lore Aragorn and Tactics Boromir. It is some time since I played the deck so I am not sure how it would fare against the most recent decks but at the time (about a year ago) it was able to handle pretty much all the quests. The biggest problem I had with the deck was that the games always felt the same: you struggled a bit in the beginning before Boromir got going, then you had no trouble whatsoever. Gandalf was there for card draw until you have used Aragorn's action. Then for more threat reduction if needed. Boromir with Song of Wisdom and A Burning Brand, or just the Shield mostly and maybe a Dúnedain Warning, he was able to handle the enemies, and the Sword helped with questing. The good thing was, this was probably the only time Rivendell Minstrel played a major role in my decks. She was essential for the Song of Kings and Wisdom, and with the Sword she was a powerful quester. Another good point was that it was winning solo without Spirit, which I always find no mere feat, unless you go Dwarf or Outlands.

However, add Lore, and it becomes a very different deck from what we get above, so none of this is probably very relevant for the OP.

Ok, misunderstood. Your deck sounds interesting, given the natural team up with Lorigorn and Boromir. Care to share your deck list in another thread so as to not derail this one any further?
