Worried about 400pt games.

By chriscook, in Star Wars: Armada

As we play 300pt games they do seem to take some time and at times get bogged down in the middle of board. I am worried about 400 pt swarm type builds and a boatload of fighters slowing the game down. Is this a concern or will we get faster at playing? Also, are people getting 6 rounds in a 2hr time limit at 400pts?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I would not worry about it, I am going to guess that people will bring something crazy like 2 VSD and 1 ISD which effectively will 1 shot a lot of opponents ships. I bet the first two rounds will take up time but with skilled players most will just be moving really quickly to a round where they can light each other up.

Don't worry about it friend.

I play almost exclusively 400 point games now because we tend to run 2v2. If anything, it has had a positive impact.

official tournament time limit for 400 points games will be 150 minutes : 2.5 hours.

this adds 30 minutes to the current 300 point time limit. I feel this should be sufficient to complete 6 rounds.

It might even make for faster games. 400 points will allow you to control more ships so you could have greater chances to take down ships through focus fire. Similarly, it will allow people to play more ships with more damage dice resulting in more meaningful attacks.

OMG, who the hell wants to play 3 2.5 hr games in a tourney setting. If this is the case the designers really fed up with this game. 40k does not even take that much time.

I kind of agree. its just a little long. I play in a league, so its one game then we all go for beers after. If prizing is really cool for the summer kit I could see myself playing in 1 tournament this summer. But thats it.

Our 400 point games haven't come close to 2.5 hours, and thats including the time it takes us to set up and build the fleet. In a 2v2. Honestly, if you aren't being silly slow, it straight up shouldn't take that long.

Hmmm, we'll if your games are taking so long, cut down on the points and work on each aspect. My 300 point games take at best an hour so I don't see 400 points being so outrageous. Maybe for those who are inexperienced, but for people used to the flow of the game and can adapt fast turns should only take 10 minutes, 15 minutes at best in 400pts.

I played in a tournament yesterday ( not Armada ). For the most part every match was finished before time was called. However, each round, a single game went to time. That is all it takes to turn it into a long day, 1 match a round.

It doesn't matter how fast you finish, the slowest game sets the pace for that round. My fastest round yesterday was 15 minutes, yet my game went to time in the final round. No one person was to blame, that's just how it played out.

My point, I could definitely see Armada tournaments taking a long time.

You should expect any wargame tournament to be an all day affair. I honestly don't get people being worried that they will have to take the day to attend a tournament. Any gaming event I used to attend was a day long affair, Magic/L5R/40K/WFB.

X-Wing has spoiled people for time limits.

I don't think its going to be any massive change moving from 300pts to 400pts squadron limit is 100pts still so your probably looking at adding 1-2 more ships but adding large base ships will bring that down again question is will CR90 swarm's start appearing 9 basic ones in 400 pts with an admiral... can anyone say ramfest

Squadron limit is 1/3 points, so 134 (or 133?) in 400 point games

You round up, so 134

Squadrons will go up to 133 points. It's 1/3 of the total.

I've never had a game go longer than 45 minutes.

game length won't take long at all unless you have to do a lot of fiddly bits

and if the game devolves into a slugfest in the middle, that's on the players :P

play space whales if you want to avoid it, they love lapping around enemies and blowing them into bits

I'm sure it says in the ruled pack it will stay at 100pts for squadrons at 400pts battles

I'm not sure what a ruled pack is, but fleet builds are a point total with no more than 1/3 of that point total being allowed for squadrons.

Rules reference guide, page 6 under fleet building

FFG has already stated that squadrons will be 134 when playing at 400pts, it is in the latest tournament rules or FAQ I believe

Very few tournaments games go to time currently, almost all are under 90 minutes, often closer to 60. So yeah, you can take 2.5 hours, and some people will, but it's entirely possible (and I'd say likely, if my local scene is representative) that you'll be shaving half an hour to an hour off of each round.

More points = More firepower = Faster games as ships die faster

There's a fixed turn limit, I don't see how people can play more than 1 1/2 hours of Armada per round honestly. Each turn takes about 20-25 mins maximum.

40k GTs are 3 games of 3 hours over 2 days in comparison.

Well I do.

And as for 40k. That's the game that never bloody ends.

2.5 hours is a hard limit on 400pt games which I've been enforcing even in friend games to keep up the speed for tournament play.

33 points of extra fighters shouldn't bog too much...if anything, it means people can add more named pilots in to accompany what they already have. I imagine the new Rogues stuff will be costly, points wise...!

As far as playtime is concerned, 90 minutes is plenty for 300, so I'd estimate 120 minutes for 400. That's a damnside shorter than WH40k and Warzone: Resurrection, so I don't have an issue with that at all :) Besides...Star Wars :P

I have been playing 400 and the game is quite fun at that level.

You feel quite overwhelmed looking at the stuff on the other side. No matter what it looks like a metric ton of stuff. But hey, your opponent does the same, and the game isn't half as static as a meta as it is with 300 points.
