Epic Failure...Remember Darth Vader does CRITICAL Damage!

By brian0351, in X-Wing Battle Reports

I don't post much but I had to tell this story because of how embarrassingly painful it was! Today was my first X-Wing Tournament ever. I had been excited to actually play the game outside of my house.

I won my first game on points because we were both new and my opponent made many movement mistakes but I started to get my grove.

My second game. I was running Patrol Leader w/Darth Vader, Gunner, Rebel Captive and Engine Upgrade + Howlrunner w/Swarm Tactics and 2 APs. I forget the full list of my opponent but he was running Dash with Outrider and HLC.

The game goes on and it's just Dash and the PL. Now I had used Darth to give him two damage cards and had done some dice damage. Dash was down to 2 Hull Points remaining and I was down to 5 Hull points. We were at range one and did an attack that missed. So I pulled a Darth. That's when I realized I read the card wrong he was supposed to get criticals, not regular damage. My opponent then flipped the card. It was the critical that destroyed his Secondary weapon. So, now that it was gone, he was free to use his Primary weapon at Range 1. So 2 Attack Dice + 1 For Range one. THREE HITs! I am dead and he wins.

Just for the sake of it, I ask him to flip over the previous damage card Darth gave him. STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. Had I paid attention I would have won that game. We both just laughed. He went on to place 4th-ish and I placed 23rd with a 2-3. Not bad for my first run. Lol.

I just competed in my first tournament yesterday and in most of the games I played my opponents were very helpful, pointing out pilot skills I had forgotten about or advising me to barrel roll my B-Wing to get into a firing arc. So I think you were a bit unlucky your opponent in the second game either didn't know Vader's ability or kept quiet about it.

Still, you learned a lesson and I bet you won't forget that ability again! I also learned a lot about my ships yesterday and flying in general. Me and my son will be heading back to the game store soon for a casual night...
