Portable Wooden Gaming Table

By JBar, in Star Wars: Armada

A while back I wanted a portable but sturdy gaming table so I bough some 1ft X 1ft wooden boards from Michaels and spray painted them with textured paint. Now, I used the other sides for an Armada Table. In case anyone wants another way to build a table, I hope I can give some inspiration. I spray painted all the boards black and then "flicked" some white paint on them with my finger for the stars.

The nebulae were created with different colors of pink, blue, yellow, and white spray paint with some pastels smeared in to smoothen and blur the nebulae. Lastly, a spray matte varnish was used to seal in the colors. The varnish would sometimes blow away the pastel so multiple "smearing" was required until the colors blended.

I'm actually pretty happy with how it turned out and I love that I can rearrange the pieces however I want to. It's also very portable.

You did a very good job on the table.

I wish I had that kinda skill but alas I don't.

You'd be surprised how easy it is. I have never worked with spray paint before and the results can be amazing in literally less than 5 minutes.

Seconded.

I've painted a number of similar tables for X-wing, and it is surprisingly easy. Took me a little longer, maybe an hour all up, but that is mostly drying time.

Worth giving a shot if you are so inclined, all done with canned spray paint.

Hmmm what was the total cost?

Hmmm what was the total cost?

The boards were most expensive. They were about $5 per board (24 boards) but I've been buying them over the years. I'm sure you could get larger boards for much cheaper. I bought about 6 small spray paint cans at Michaels for about $4 each and then some white paint for $1 for the stars. I also bought a matte varnish spray for $7. The acrylics were about $10. So it would be about $150 from scratch but cheap plywood and just a small amount of spray paint from a friend could make this really cheap. Only the black paint is used in a large amount.

24 boards? Don't you need 18 at best for the 1x1 foot boards? Ohhhh set up for cards and such

You're right, 18 boards. I have 24 that I use for Warhammer 40k (the boards are painted on the other side).

Yea, those pesky 6x4 tables!
