Dominator and anti-squadron attacks

By MoffZen, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Greetings fellow Admiral !

Pretty new to the game here from France and thoroughly enjoying it so far, the guys at FFG made a kid's dream come true with that game ! :D

As I'm currently building my fleet(s?), I was looking at the Dominator card and the Dominator's fluff on Wookieepedia where it says that it was refitted as an anti-Rebel Squadron ship. So, this prompted the following question regarding its ability :

When making an attack that targets squadrons, is it considered as a single attack that targets all squadrons in range and within the arc of the hull zone, or is each squadron subject to an attack. The Learning Book and the Reference book both seem to hint that it is a single attack that targets all the squadrons in range but I wanted to be sure with help from you guys because you're using the "proper" ruleset (in English). Therefore, a single use of the Dominator's ability would allow to add the dice to the pool for each targeted squadron ?

Would it be legal to say that when using the Dominator's ability in an anti-fighter attack, you could potentially add up to 2 blue dice when resolving the attack against each squadron in range and line of sight of the attack, and only losing up to two shields ?

Thanks a lot !

Although you attack all squadrons within the ship's hull zone, each attack is treated separately. Therefore, any effects that apply to an attack will only work on one roll (e.g. the extra die from ConFire can only be used once).

Thanks for the reply mate, I definitely understand the bit about the command token, but which sentence of the rulebook would indicate card effects ?

I'm in no way doubting your reply, I just want to have clear rules material to avoid a lengthy debate should someone try to pull this against me :P

Cheers

You use the Dominator ability in step 3 of an attack which is the modify dice step. When you are attacking all squadrons in a single arc you attacking the first and can use the Dominator ability to roll additional dice. When you get to step 6 of the attack which allows you declare another squadron to attack you go back to step 2 Roll Attack dice. So you would roll a separate attacking against the second squadron, you then get the option to use the Dominator ability again on that attack in step 3.

So for each squadron you roll a separate attack and you can chose to use the Dominator ability each time by paying it's cost each time.

It's also worth noting that if the attack is obstructed then you remove one die from the pool before rolling, since VSD only have one anti fighter attack dice this then means you can't roll any dice and therefore can't attack and never get the chance to use the Dominator ability against that squadron.

◊◊ If the attacker cannot gather any dice appropriate for
the range of the attack, the attack is canceled.

I should have clarified my post a bit more, sorry. Gibbonis is correct. If it is an effect you can use multiple times, you can use it for each attack as long as you pay the appropriate cost each time.

Thanks for the clarification guys ! It seems I indeed missed step 3 and the "Modify dice" but it's crystal clear now :)

On a side note, had a game with a Tarkin led Victory I Dominator today and used the ability for each attack like you said. Even if this is more costly, this ship is an absolute beast both in ship to ship and ship to squadron engagements.

You may want to rethink that strategy. 9 times out of 10 I would be willing to trade a point of damage on one of my fighters for a point of damage on your Star Destroyer. It can definitely be worth it in particular situations but I wouldn't do it often.

Oh yeah, it's a situational move. But there was no TIE left and these Xwings needed to die, hehe.

When in Black Die range though, that ability is killer when you roll 2 accuracies on the blues and one shot a ship. Very versatile boat that Dominator.
