Viable rebel fleets without assault frigate

By stev, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

So i'm still very new to this game and I would like advice on building a fleet.

I currently own core set and the corvette and neb expansions soon the fighter expansion.

Are there any viable build with what i own or do i need the assault frigate?

Thank you for advice/help

I have found 3 Nebulons with a Corvette and a couple b-wings to work well.

Yes, absolutely you can have viable builds without the Assault Frigate. Here's a quick list I made with just what you'll have:

Flagship: (89 pts)

CR90 Corvette A(44 pts)

  • Mon Mothma (30 pts)
  • Leia Organa (3 pts)
  • Enhanced Armament (10 pts)
  • Jaina's Light (2 pts)

Fleet Ship 1: (69 pts)

Nebulon-B Escort Frigate(57 pts)

  • Ray Antilles (7 pts)
  • Yavaris (5 pts)

Fleet Ship 2: (77 pts)

Nebulon-B Escort Frigate(57 pts)

  • Intel Officer (7 pts)
  • XI7 Turbolasers (6 pts)
  • Salvation (7 pts)

Squadrons (62 of 99 pts):

  • 1x B-Wing Squadron (14 pts)
  • 2x A-Wing Squadron (22 pts)
  • 2x X-Wing Squadron (26 pts)

Objectives:

  • Opening Salvo
  • Hyperspace Assault
  • Intel Sweep

Now, the thing with Nebs and Corvettes is that they are some of the best ships around, but they can get themselves into trouble reaaaaaally quickly if played poorly. Practice, practice, practice to understand what your ships are capable of doing (both with maneuvering and firepower).

Your strengths: good AA firepower, great long range sniping firepower, good maneuverability and reactivity with Jaina's Light, good mix of fighters for any situation

Your weaknesses: those Neb side arcs! Close range enemies will put the hurt on you

Played correctly, you have a good chance at winning. Now, this is just an example - there are many other possible "good" lists. Go and practice!

I'm not a fan of the Space Guppy myself, so all my Rebel fleets are NebB's and CR90's. At 300 points, you can easily field two each of these two ships and still have fighter support, or go three ships with more upgrades and fighters.

Buying more ships get you things like the CR90 swarm or triple NebB.

There are many options to flying without the mk2, but it does indeed take some practice since these ships just aren't anywhere near as durable or forgiving or powerful as the Assault Frigate.

Interested in this as well - I have the core set, a rebel fighter pack, imperial fighter pack, an extra ISD and an extra Nebulon B.

Played our first game last night and the rebels got smashed so hard that JJ Abrams had to rewrite Force Awakens to include a character called God-Emperor Palpatine.

Obviously made errors but even accounting for things that I can see I obviously shouldn't do again I'm not seeing how to get past the fact that a Vic 2 can effortlessly one shot a nebulon B. I suspect I've got some reading to do.

At present, I'd say you are at a structural disadvantage without the assault frigate. By which I mean, I think Medium ships outgun small ships for points. You can see it when Nebs try to fight VSDs, or Gladiators try to fight Assault frigates.

Clue is in the title. It is a Nebulon B ESCORT frigate or Nebulon B SUPPORT frigate. Its not designed to be a main line of battle ship.

When Wave 2 hits, it will no doubt change again. Probably/maybe, large ships will dominate the medium but could find themselves vulnerable to small ships.

Looking forward to wave 2 - my theme for the game is to stick to ships from the movies. Home One and the ISD both qualify (the VSD's I justified on the grounds that there were no alternatives and they're big triangles so they at least look basically correct).

having played 2 Afmkiis, I can safely says you don't need it at all

the Afmkii is not a VSD, it's actually not capable of out gunning similar points of smaller ships. In fact, one of the ship's biggest short-comings is its offense which is very low without stacking upgrades. It's very maneuverable, durable, and flexible (dice-arc distribution) but it is simply not that scary on its own.

I can also report that spam of the small ships works incredibly well. CR-90 swarms are very potent, and 3 Nebs w/ample squadrons are also quite powerful if a little difficult to get used. to. There's nothing in the game that can take Yavaris B-wings to the face. The Neb isn't much for straight spamming (unless we can somehow slap Salvation on all of them), but with squadrons it gets all it needs to be the only ship in your fleet.

I suggest to get, as soon as you can of course, one Mark II (if you can, 2). Not a big fan of playing only with little ships.

As Ophion said, Nebulon and cr90 are suposed to be support or escort ships, not capital o main ship. Of course they are so usefull if you want to flank VSD while your Mark II is fighting against them, but you need a least one medium ship.

Don't understand that kind of list where people plays with 3 nebulons or cr90. One of the main problems with the rebels before the wave 1 was, only small ships in rebel side, and that means insufficient fire power to get down those VSD. Now, rebels have Mark II, there is no need with play only with small ships. Of course I'm not referring to you cause as u said, this is the ships avaible in your list. But some guys have these kind of list O.o

This: Large > Medium > Small > Large

Yes....and some of us have decent success with it. :)

Consider, 3 nebulous and 2 cr90a's have the ability to put 13 red dice onto a target at long range, or 18 if you use a CF command. Even considering that you won't always get a clean shot with all ships at your target, it's still a LOT of firepower. Small ships can be quite deadly.

Plus, I think it fits the rebel "underdog" theme better, Bringing whatever ships they can scrape together into the fight, and surviving through pure determination and grit.

So when Home One will be released you are not going to play with it and chose 4-5 nebulon or the new frigate?

Absolutely I'll be getting it. But sometimes I'll use it and sometimes I won't. For sure I'll be curious to see how things match up. Variety is the spice of....wargaming?

I know I'll be running 4 Nebs with 4 Bs, 5 Xs

but I'll also be running Akbar with 3 Whales :P
