What other board games do you play?

By GroggyGolem, in X-Wing Off-Topic

The current go-to game is Legendary: the Marvel Deckbuilding game. It is magnificent and fun.

King of New York

Dead of Winter

Love Letter

Cash 'n Guns

Lords of Waterdeep

Flash Point: Fire Rescue

Dragon's Gold

The Resistance (bit overplayed so it's on hiatus)

Pandemic

My wife and I play a bunch of Magic Duel Decks if we can find the time.

Oh and I play Lord of the Rings: the Living Card Game, solo most of the time.

That game is the closest you'll get to the books in terms of atmosphere.

Ooh, I forgot Imperial Assault as well :o

I play Imperial Assault and Gears of War.

Got any recommendations for solo play games? I've been looking for something to get for those nights when I feel like a game but there's not one available to get together with.

Those D&D boardgames like Wrath of Ashardalon. There is no "dungeon master" you draw new dungeon tiles, draw random monster cards and the monsters have a programmed move set. (Goblin archer: if more than 5 squares away, shoots bow. if not moves 3 squares towards nearest hero)

Yeah, I've been considering one of those D&D tile games, I found a cool Gamma World homebrew mod for them too. Gears of Wars is basically the same thing, only it's really brutal and you're more likely to die than succeed.

I'm kind of interested in a non-miniature game though.

Battletech, 40k, WHFB etc all abandonned.

Still active:

Super Dungeon Explore

Fortune and Glory

and of course

CARDS AGAINST HUMANITY

Well there's FFG's Lord of the rings cardgame. that's 1-4 players.

I guess you could play Ghost Stories by yourself (1 player 3 neutral boards) as it's a the player(s) vs the game, type of boardgame. But it's a very hard to beat game.

I'm only including games that were designed to be 1+ players, but you can find homebrew 1 player variants for lots of games (Even Android Netrunner!)

There's a solo Netrunner variant, that's interesting. I've never played a LCG/CCG but I use to read a bunch of William Gibson so Netrunner looks pretty cool. I may have to check that out, thanks!

A friend of mine sent me this, It uses scrabble tiles of all things! but it's very thematic getting the password and my friend was verry impressed with it.

Dangit, I'm already avoiding Armada 'cause I haven't got the money for anything in addition to X-wing, but that advertisement is highly enticing!

Go watch some video reviews first though! And expansions make great birthday and christmas presents.

Cards of Cthulhu is designed as a singleplayer game, but can also be run as multiplayer (up to 4). I love this game, though you need to be able to plan ahead.

We play:

X-Wing

Zombicide

Ticket to ride

Pandemic

Dead of winter

Sheriff of Nottingham

Would recommend all of the above.

For solo, you can also play Legendary, the Marvel one at any rate, not sure about the Aliens one.

Axis & Allies is great fun, as is Risk..

I absolutely hate Risk. In fact I just threw out my copy of it yesterday to make shelf room. I hate dice based games. Oh, wait a minute...

X-Wing

Armada

Imperial Assault

Zombicide

Wiz-War

Drakon

King of Tokyo

Doomtown

Eminent Domain

Legendary

Smash Up

Camel Up

Sherrif of Nottingham

I don't own but often like to play

Catan

Waterdeep

Resistance (Though I think the game is flawed - it's virtually impossible for the resistance to win unless they get EXTREMELY lucky, or the spies are new / fumb).

I just had a fun game afternoon/evening yesterday. We played Coup, Ticket to Ride Heart of Africa, and Star Trek Catan (I normally wouldn't have given in to the Other Star Franchise, but I wasn't the organizer :). I like all kinds of games - Dominion, Phase Ten, the redesigned 2008 mission Risk, Risk 2210, Star War Risk, the new Civilization board game (based on the computer game), Munchkin, Vegas Showdown - lots of nerdy board games.

You should give RISK Legacy a try if you haven't done so already.

Oh, man, if I had a group of 4-5 friends who lived close enough to do 10 weeks of Legacy, I would totally do it. But I only really have one friend who could do it. :(

Legacy doesn't take as long as regular RISK (especially the first few games before you've unlocked most of the extra stuff) we played with 4 later 3 players and often did 2 games each gamenight (and still had time over to play magic and other games) not having to conquer the whole board but just get 5 VP/take out your opponent's bases feels a lot better.

My group and I have a monthly Wings of Glory game at a local game store. That has been running for four years now. We've also played some Star Trek Attack Wing and a tiny bit of D&D Attack Wing. For some outlandish fun, my kids and I did a combo -- D&D Attack Wings of Glory. Yes, a large red dragon fought two British biplanes.

We've also fiddled around with Tomorrow's War, and Force on Force.

As for actual board games... lets see... Great Brain Robbery, Kill Doctor Lucky, Before I Kill You Mr. Bond, Illuminati, Talisman (original), Zombies!!!, RoboRally, Deluxe Ogre, classic Ogre/GEV, WarpWar, Melee/Wizard, Pandemic, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Small World, Tokaido, Tsuro, and... I'm sure I've missed a couple.

Oh, Ticket to Ride. How could I have forgotten that?!?

The Red Baron vs a red dragon! Awesome! like something out of Weird Wars...

Thanks. Glad you liked it. I came up with a quick set of rules to incorporate the dragon's powers, and a way to blend the two systems (which are different, yet similar). The final outcome was very even. My Bristol Fighter gave a good account, taking 7 damage on the first shot, but staying relatively unscathed for most of the battle, until the end, when a second 7 points of fire brought me down. My eldest son, in the Sopwith Tripe, took enough damage early on to call it quits.

And the dragon... he was one point away from death at the end. So close.

My wife and I had a nice game of Takenoko followed by a game of Tokaido yesterday. Forgot how fun they can be.
