What other board games do you play?

By GroggyGolem, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Open discussion. I always like learning about new board games or even new perspectives on board games I have heard of.

Right now I've been thinking a lot about Firefly The Game. I created a single page player reference guide to aid players in my group.

Also, I just played Saboteur for the first time last night and I am excited for the next time I get to play it.

We play:

King of Tokyo.. great fun huge monsters destroy each other game, dice based, very manga. You can play it in 20mins

Dungeonquest The old 80s GW version, abotu a 16 per cent chance your character will survive and always a different map.

Arkham Horror Fantastic cooperative cthulu mythos game but takes a while to play and set up

Talisman (newFFG version). A classic game but put a day aside to play it.

Kings and Things. Old GW licence, fun enough and very random

Guilletine, more of a card game but this and 'Fluxx' we play in the pub a lot.

21b Baker Street. Puzzle solving game with sherlock holmes. Visit locations, get clues return home to solve crime.

scrabbble... the old fave for the wife and me. I've lost one game in seven years :)

Not sure if you just want games with a physical board to play on or strategy games in general but...

Cosmic Encounters(not to be confused with casual encounters) is one of my long standing favorites. The mechanics are really simple but there are like 100 alien races/powers that bend and break rules. It makes for really different strategy every game. You have to play with a rules Nazi though. You can't skim over little things.

The Battlestar Galactica game is really good. It's partial co-op but you have "secret" bad players. I don't want to give away too much incase you're waiting to see the show.

Sentinels of the Multiverse is my lastest game. I'm digging it now. It's a card based, generic superhero, co-op game.

We too play King of Tokyo in our group. It's a game we often introduce newcomers to because it's simple. It's our go to for when we don't know what game to play or if we have a lot of people. We have recently been getting games that can handle 6+ players due to large game nights.

Any games in the tabletop gaming hobby really.

Cosmic Encounter is fantastic! I have the first expansion so we can play with up to 6 players. We tend to leave it for game nights when we are up to the mental challenge of it, as the game typically lasts around 2 hours for us.

I have not played BSG yet, there are so many games with traitor mechanics in them and I have heard BSG can take 3+ hours to play. That amount of time is not intimidating to myself (I have happily played 10+ hour games of Twilight Imperium 3) but the players in my group would groan if it lasts much longer than 2 hours.

I've gotten to try out Sentinels once or twice. It seems pretty fun, I don't recall if we won the game or not.

This is the only non-digital game that I play.

I play:

(miniatures)

SW: Armada

SW: Imperial Assault

Star Trek: Attack Wing

(Board games)

Talisman

Ticket to Ride

Carcassonne

Settlers of Catan

I played Spartacus once as the mid season break in my X-Wing league. It was a ton of fun, quick to learn and has the 'screw over everyone else' feel that can be fun.

I personally suggest you try some other board games for funzies. It's neat trying new games, especially when they are self-contained and you know they won't drag you away from the precious FFG-crack errr I mean X-Wing Miniatures. :)

Cool beans! How do you like Catan? It's one of those well-known games that is always suggested as a good entry into the hobby but I have not yet played it. I played Star Trek Catan once though. I'm unsure how similar they are.

Nice! That's actually made by GaleForce Nine (or gf9), the same people who made Firefly: The Game! What's the main goal of the game?

What's the main goal of the game?

The game is based on the TV Show. The goal is to be the first to earn 10 Influence (I think, maybe it was called renown). You gain influence by winning with your gladiator in the arena and/or by hosting the games.

You get cards to play that can do things like poison another players gladiator or earn influence/renown or cost another player money or slaves.

Then each turn ends with a gladiator fight in the arena. The players bid gold to host the games, then the host picks two players (can pick himself) to fight. You have miniature gladiators you move around the arena and roll dice for attack and defense. It's actually like a striped down and quick miniature game in it's own right.

The biggest part of it, is to act like a "Roman", wheel and deal, make alliances, sell and buy or kill slaves in the name of earning influence for your house.

I came here to mention (amongst the other great games listed above) Boss Monster. It's a fun little game, cheap and easy to learn. It's also great for all ages. My 9 yr old nephew loves it, my 40 year old mates love it. You can play easily in 30 mins (including setup time).

I am very interested in Spartacus .. Thanks for the info ^.

How many players does it support? Is it cooperative or competitive?

Basically, you are the boss level of an 80's era computer game. The heroes come to your dungeon and fight their way through. You have to build your world to stop them .. by any means necessary. This means building your dungeon or using spells to stooge your mates. Really fun.

2-4 competetive. The card art is wonderful too. Especially for fellas in their 30's. http://brotherwisegames.com/

I hear ya man! To be fair, they got me with the box art. I love all the references to other media (monthy python, magic teh gathering, etc) Please tell me you also have the expansion (shaped like a gameboy gamebox).

It sure is awesome! (Richard Garfield does it again!) Do you have the expansions and/or have you played King of New York? (it abreviates to "KONY" wich is kinda hilarious to me) I'm not sure wich of the two I like best. I think it's whatever one I'm playing at the time.

Also I have yet to beat my ten year old godchild at it. (she's like Rodney Smith's son... but worse! The stuff she rolls out of those dice when she needs it, gaaaah! :D )

Oh yeah forgot to mention this one:

pic2034769_md.jpg

It looks easy and funny: just a quick eye-hand cördination/ recognise and react game...

But it turns into a melee as everybody makes a grab for the right object.

Best not played against people with sharp finger nails and metalheads wearing studded wristbands . :D

Ticket to Ride definitely a family favorite. With my friends we play a lot of Axis and Allies, Shogun, Fortress America if we wanna go really old school

It's just coming to Australia. I bought the game on a whim when I was living in Canada. Will pick the expansion up in a few weeks though. I saw the expansion pack online and almost lost my ####. It looks great. Did you see there's a Boss Monster 2 coming soon?

I... Did not know that.

Thanks for letting me know! I'll go bug my local game store owner into getting me a copy...

I go to a monthly game night and almost always play something new. Depending on what kind of game you are looking for. I have 2 kids so if we are playing with them we need something simple that keeps their interest. There are a lot of good games.

3 little pigs

Roll for It

Hare and Tortise

We also play Carassonne and Catan. Catan can get too long for my 6 year old. I'd like to get the kids version. They also love Forbidden Desert. Kings of Tokyo and Kings of NY are both a lot of fun.

If you want more in depth games, Dead of Winter was fun. Ticket to Ride, Suburbia, Lords of Waterdeep,

Love Letter, Tsuro, Bang are all fun and genearlly quick games

See if your local place as demo games. There is a lot out there! Good luck and have fun!

Battletech/alpha strike

Armada

Heroclix

The new batman miniature game

We've also got non miniature games we play as well.

Nuclear War is one of my favorites. Smash Up! is another great one, though both of them are probably more card than board games...

Axis & Allies is great fun, as is Risk. I'll also second King of Tokyo and Ticket to Ride. Chess, of course.

Long Live the King is kind of a combo board game and mini-RPG. Various characters vie for position to succeed the dying king.

Nuclear War is one of my favorites.

Have you seen that they are running a kickstarter for the 50th anniversary of the game?

My wife and I used to host a weekly game night before we had our first child, so we have a lot of games that we play/ed on a rotating basis. Due to having several people over, we often needed games that played more than the standard four players, and we like to have games that aren't your average classic game or mindless "party" games. (Nothing wrong with classic board games; we just like to try new stuff.)

One of our longstanding favourites is Shadows over Camelot , a cooperative7-player game that casts you as a knight of the Round Table (you must dance whene'er you're able!), going on various quests simultaneously to protect the realm. We've tried playing the Traitor variant where one knight is working against the group unbeknownst to them, but nobody drew the traitor card. I imagine that would make it much more difficult.

Our old standby is of course Catan of which we own all the expansions and extensions, except for Knights and Cities . One of our favourite editions is Explorers and Pirates , which drastically changes the dynamics of the game.

Some of our other regular games have already been mentioned, but I'll second Bang! , Ticket to Ride , and Carcassonne . I have Axis & Allies , but only played it once for my birthday last year; hopefully, I'll get to play it more over the summer. I play Risk with my father-in-law and some of his buddies when we go to their place for dinner once a week, and it's usually a very good time.

A couple others that we don't play as often, but still enjoy, are Upon a Fable , Splendor , The Game of Things , Munchkin , and 7 Wonders . I got A Game of Thrones: The Board Game for Christmas, and the 3 times we've played it, I really liked it!

Nuclear War is one of my favorites.

Have you seen that they are running a kickstarter for the 50th anniversary of the game?

I had not! I shall look into this glory!
