Triple A Aces

By thespis721, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm putting together a tournament list with three A-Wings. At least one person on this board has heard of my usage of this list to some success, but I am thinking of making one change. Here's the list:

Tycho (37)

- Push the Limit

- Expert Handling

- Proton Rockets

- Experimental Interface

- Test Pilot

Jake Farrell (33)

- Push the Limit

- Veteran Instincts

- Proton Rockets

- Autothrusters

- Test Pilot

Gemmer Sojan (30)

- Predator

- Proton Rockets

- Autothrusters

- Test Pilot

It's a fun list to fly. You have triple action Jake, and a triple action Tycho (as long as one of his actions is a barrel roll) and Gemmer mucking things up. But I RARELY get Gemmer's Prockets off. Maybe half the time I play the list. So my question is this:

Would it be better to drop Gemmer's Rockets and change Jake's VI to Outmeneuver and grab the initiative bid OR keep as is because a VI Jake is a strong predator and having the offensive option with Gemmer is better then not?

I like a 9 PS Jake. You might consider dumping the prockets and Gemmer for two base A-Wings, otherwise Jake and Tycho look ready to go.

I'm way to into the 5 ProtoProcket list to go with only 3, but it's still a heckuva ship :)

That's a lot of dice to drop into someone and with 3 green die, it'll LIKELY not get one shot. Prockets are great. With this list, Jake has one-shot an Echo and a Soontir but I also have the guts to get in their faces because of the triple actions. Procketed Protos HAVE to focus up and make sure they don't use their focus before everyone else fires at them.

I took my own "triple eh?!" list to a store championship earlier this year. It's a ton of fun to fly, but you are on the razors edge, one turn without actions and in enemy arc's means a bad day (this is true of any interceptor type ship however)

Triple Eh?!

Tycho Celchu (26)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Proton Rockets (3)
Push the Limit (3)
Autothrusters (2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)
Jake Farrell (24)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Proton Rockets (3)
Push the Limit (3)
Autothrusters (2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)
Gemmer Sojan (22)
Proton Rockets (3)
Push the Limit (3)
Stealth Device (3)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)
Total: 99

I've been rolling list keeping Jake at VI instead of going for the outmaneuver and it's been super successful. I've lost once out of about 8 games winning against a Soontir/Deci list, a poorly put together Bro Bot list, and a TIE swarm. It just takes a lot of practice to learn how to fly these guys and not letting them get blocked and being patient enough to bug out when necessary.

I now still toy with putting an ion pulse missle on Gemmer because he doesn't always get his prockets off every match. Completely ionizing someone (especially a soontir) when stressed can be a great turn for my other guys to fly in and rip apart a ship.... but losing that 5 dice attack from Gemmer when he does use it is rough.

I hardly ever see outmaneuver on anyone's A lists. With the new meta starting to stray away from the PS9 or go home idea, it VI all that necessary? My new favorite A list that I want to try is as follows:

Tycho Celchu (26)

A-Wing Test Pilot (0)

Push the Limit (3)

Outmaneuver (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Proton Rockets (3)

Jake Farrell (24)

A-Wing Test Pilot (0)

Push the Limit (3)

Outmaneuver (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Proton Rockets (3)

Green Squadron Pilot (19)

A-Wing Test Pilot (0)

Push the Limit (3)

Outmaneuver (3)

Autothrusters (2)

Chardaan Refit (-2)

Total : 97

I hope the outmaneuver will give some added firepower so that the Green doesn't need Prockets as at PS3 I'm not sure if he will get them off reliably. Obviously this list can't really do much to a nimble VI whisper and Soontir might give it some trouble, but Dash, brobots, chirpy, etc can still get one of two nasty prockets. Is there a reason why Tycho at least doesn't seem to get outmaneuver on many lists?

I don't have outmaneuver, not because it's not bad but I can't seem to justify it at 3 points. VI still is important as people run a lot of Han/Chiry/Bobas out there and Soontir still needs it.

The only reason that Tycho is where he is because I just am in love with Expert Handling/Experimental Interface/PtL combination on him. Even without autothrusters, he's incredibly hard to hit if you fly him appropriately.
