Tried it. Octahedrons are not sphere enough and the water surface tension prevents it from spinning.
Try dropping it from an inch above the surface - it spins well enough in the solution before righting itself near the surface.
It takes a lot more salt than I expected, though! However, while I didn't find anything untoward with the attack dice, I did find some anomalies in my defense dice. Two of them would roll blanks, no matter how I oriented them before dropping in the water - the blank side would flip to the top. And a third would consistently roll focus results - like 50% of the drops, even adjusting the focus sides to the bottom as much as possible - would result in a 'focus' result.
So...yeah, those guys pulled from circulation.
It's a lot more effective if you actually agitate (i.e. 'stir') the water enough to dissolve the salt. The maximum saline content for room temperature water is roughly 36%... this means that you ought to be able to dissolve 1/3 cup of salt into a cup of water, give or take, though that's probably far more than you need in order to float a die. Adding a drop or two of dish detergent to the brine will reduce the surface tension slightly and help the dice to spin more freely.
I didn't do a bouancy test, but I did roll mine several hundred times and weeded out all but the top 4 red and green. Call me crazy, but with interceptors I live by the dice! Duds equal death...

Wait... so you rolled all the hits out, and THOSE are the ones you kept? You ARE crazy! ![]()
I seem to roll like a god often. If anyone were ever to ask me to trade dice with them or if the playgroup wanted to put them in one bag, shake them up and redistribute them I'd be fine with that.
Maybe we could find a maker of perfectly balanced D8's and just roll those instead?
Unlike D20's which are almost spheres, I think weight distribution would matter less on something like a D8. I think it's not that big of a problem.

What he is saying is that he has found the dice that are loaded in his favor and now only uses them. A prime example of why using the same dice should be mandatory.
If an 8 is weighted towards one side or the other...it will be weighted in one of the points. The way the dice are set up it doesn't make much of a difference because there are 3 good results out of 4 opposite the point. So not a big deal for x-wing dice. Cool demo though, now I know why I always died in d&d.

To get it to work right for the X-Wing dice, I found that a tall wide mouthed cup works best. I have a 32 oz take-out cup that probably needed a pound of salt to float the dice. I have found that 8 of the 12 green dice will almost always float to one particular face. Unfortunately, 5 of them always came up on blanks, including 2 of my 2015 Regional Top 8 dice (which were consistently rolling poorly, and why I decided to try this out in the first place. The other 4 defense dice seem to be much more balanced and would definitely float multiple different sides. I still need to test my attack dice, and see if rolling the dice shows that the un-balanced weighting affects them as well.
This shouldn't really be much of an issue in general, since I prefer to use a dice tower when I play, if possible.

But just how loaded is the real question. I have rolled each of my 6 greens at least 5000 times with my Dice Roller 3000 to very marginal results. Out of the 6, one was rolling focus about 4% more than expected, and blanks 4% less than expected. There is some margin of error there as well. It is still a 6% chance that this was the result of just chance, which is still a good chance.
But my rig was essentially a spinning dice tower. So the only thing it really tested is that using the ffg dice, a dice tower will give you random results. It did not test how a plop roll method affects the results.... a octahedron is just a bad shape for rolling unless you throw them like craps.
I just have a personal loathing for the dice in general. But in my casual games, I've been using my custom set

I'm curious. Are you (or anyone else, for that matter) checking to see if it's the same blank face that shows up repeatedly? Or are you just noting whether it is a blank, focus, evade, hit, or crit?

Die rolling programs can't be completely random either. They depend on so many factors, least of which is the skill of the programmer. We had a section on that in programming theory.
One a side note: You can also test to see if eggs are still fresh by dropping them in water and checking if they float. And if you crack them open they are delicious.

With the float method, I temporarily marked each blank face, so I could then tell which individual faces were coming up the most. The dice that consistently floated to the same face were easy enough to determine the "dominant" face, but the more random ones took a little more time/effort to determine that there was no dominant face.

Because dice can't be tampered with right?

Neither can an app, right?
That sort of rebuttal does genuinely very little to assist your point as it turns out people can find a way to cheat at anything if they want to.

Abuse how?
